I’ve been cleaning out my office and just came across this VHS of a pilot I did in 1999 called Chicks. Meredith and I were cast as best friends (along with the brilliant @ladyburns) and while the pilot didn’t get picked up, Mere and I went to series and are still on the air. So, I love set stories. I love nothing more than hearing what went wrong, who won’t come out of their trailer, what lines were improved, which actors passed… I just love a good set story. Because of this, I sort of feel like my friend and old colleague @ed_zwick_official wrote a book just for me. After devouring Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions, I thought I’d share MY Ed Zwick story with you. It was 2000, I was 26 years old and I had been making a pretty nice living doing sitcoms and making people laugh. I had done an arc on Party of Five, but for the most part, I had painted myself in the sitcom corner (not a bad corner to be painted in, by the way). Now, I don’t remember being sent the sides or script for Tiffany, but I do remember driving to Culver City for my audition, walking into a room with Ed and Marshall and being told that Ed was going to be reading with me. Usually for these producer sessions, you go in and read with casting or another actor — only one other time in my career has the writer/showrunner served double duty as my scene partner and it didn’t go well — but that’s a story for my own book. We read, they may have given me notes, we read again and I Ieft. What Ed and Marshall may or may not have known is that I was good friends and poker buddies with Marshall’s assistant, Josh, who called me the second I got in the car to tell me I’d gotten the role. Tiffany was only supposed to be in one episode, and I ended up staying for all three seasons. I bought my first house from that show, the house I still live in today. That show changed my life, and I am eternally grateful to Ed and Marshall for taking a chance on this funny blond and giving me the opportunity to fall in love with acting. Fun fact: My address when I booked Once and Again was 320 N. Sycamore, which also happens to be George Bailey’s address in Bedford Falls, which is the name of Ed and Marshall’s company.
