When we boarded the NZDF plane to head to the East Asia Summit this afternoon, I asked the crew whether they were expecting any updates on the Black Ferns game while we were mid air. Not only did they update us on the score, we got a run down on injuries. We landed with enough time to catch the closing 20mins…and I’m so glad we did. There are no words for that game, just like there’s almost no words for the Black Ferns. But for now, I’m going to go with ‘legends.’ 🖤🖤🖤

It’s been a busy week and I’ve been pretty slack posting about it! On Monday I chaired Cabinet from Auckland and we announced further measures to try and support our smaller retailers with significant retail crime prevention funding. The Finnish Prime Minister came to Auckland and we met before I headed off to the Fieldays to launch the Centre for Climate Action on Agricultural Emissions. Later in the week I caught up with our candidate in the Hamilton West by-election @georgiedansey and Hamilton East MP @jamiestrange_mp to see the Pacific community facility in Hamilton we have helped support. We also met with a local crime prevention team to talk about the new funding for Hamilton on crime prevention initiatives. A busy week so far, but full of important work (and great people!)

Late last night I heard news of the horrific robbery and homicide in Sandringham. I’m continuing to seek updates from the police and understand they will be sharing any new information later today. For now, what I do know is that no one should fear their loved one going to work. No one should have to confront such senseless violence or crime. To the family who today mourns their lost loved one – I am so sorry this has happened. I know our Sandringham Community is a tight knit one, and they will be feeling this deeply too. Our job as Government is to make sure those who commit such crimes are brought to justice, and to try and prevent them occurring at all. On both counts, we will keep doing all we can.
Today my friend and old colleague, Grant Robertson, announced his retirement. I have known Grant for the better part of twenty years. In many ways, I credit him with my journey to becoming a Member of Parliament. When I was a list candidate for the Labour Party, it was your ranking on the regional list that determined your success. As the brand new candidate for Wellington Central, Grant was the hot favourite for the top spot. As nominations began, someone stood to put Grant’s name forward. Almost instantly Grant stood up and announced to the room “I don’t wish to be ranked, until Jacinda Ardern is.” That story says so much about who Grant is. He is selfless, thoughtful, incredibly intelligent, fiercely loyal, and to top it off, one of the funniest people I know. As Finance Minister, he has so many achievements – the establishment of the well being framework is just one of them. He was a champion of changing the way we worked for our people and our planet, and through Covid he showed such an intense commitment to making sure people were properly supported throughout. I can’t imagine having worked with anyone better. Thank you Grant, we all owe you a debt of gratitude.

I have very vivid memories of this day three years ago, as Whakaari / White Island erupted. The lives lost, the people living with injuries and grief, a community deeply impacted – it was and continues to be a devastating event. Today I am thinking of everyone who was impacted by that day. A day forever etched in our collective memory. 📸 GNS
What an amazing moment in history – for the first time ever our parliament is made up of 50% women. We marked the occasion with a photo, inviting past MPs to join us. I’m the 99th woman to enter our parliament. Yesterday we welcomed the 177th. There are so many people who helped make this change over many decades, but the ones I want to pay tribute to, are those who went before us. The ones who were there with only a handful of others who carved a path for the rest of us. All of you made our journey that much easier. Now our job is to keep that same path clear and open for the next generation. 📸 @robertkitchin
If there was ever an example of wanting to be in two places at once….I’m gutted I can’t be at the Black Ferns final tonight (I’m having to head to the East Asia Summit with other leaders from our region) But I felt so lucky to see the team in person on Thursday night, and pass on all my respect and admiration for them. They’re an amazing team – and I hope they feel all of New Zealand’s support and love this evening. We’re with you! #GotheBlackFerns!
Quick sound check before my speech this afternoon! You’re welcome to join us virtually – we’ll be streaming from 1.30pm on my Facebook page! See you then…
Happy to be in Viet Nam alongside an excellent group of New Zealand businesses, all keen to grow our trade opportunities here! We’ve increased our exports to Viet Nam by more than 40% in the last five years, and we’re keen to grow that further. I’ll be here for the next few days with our trade delegation (in between the annual East Asia Summit which was yesterday, and APEC at the end of the week) so stay tuned for updates, or just for photos via my story!
Meet Georgie Dansey! Georgie is our candidate in the by-election in Hamilton West. I was in town this week to speak at the Tourism Summit so popped round to see Georgie and catch up. Georgie was a teacher, she owns a small business and has lived in Hamilton for roughly 20 years. If you live in Hamilton West you’ll be seeing Georgie quite a lot over the next few weeks. Do take the opportunity to say hello, I can tell you that she loves her community and would make an amazing MP (she also makes an excellent cup of tea!)

I’ve never quite understood why they make us wave for these photos, but I do know that concluding the ASEAN trade deal upgrade is a very, very good thing (hence the photo of smiling leaders.) This is a major region for our exporters, and this upgrade will make it easier for them to keep growing. On my count, it’s also the 6th free trade agreement or trade upgrade while we’ve been in Government!
Starting the day with a Global Dialogue on Post Covid Economic Recovery. Some really common themes coming through from South East Asian nations represented here – especially the inflation and cost of living issues the region is facing. I used my opportunity to speak to discuss the importance of trade as a tool to recover, the need to transition our economies in response to climate change, and finally, the need for us to focus on those hit hardest. I’m the only female leader at the East Asia Summit. We know women are feeling the brunt of the economic crisis that has followed COVID. 47 million more women and girls will be pushed into poverty by this crisis – that’s a reason to target them in our regions recovery through education, training and employment opportunities, as well addressing wider issues that are key such as access to family planning. 📸 @albomp
This afternoon was the East Asia Summit- a major gathering of leaders from across the region. We discussed everything from Myanmar to Ukraine, North Korea, tension in the South China Sea, womens economic empowerment and climate change. I was asked today whether I thought this was the worst state the region, or even the world, had been in for some time. I can certainly see why it would feel that way for many – but you don’t have to look too far back in our history to find periods of significant conflict and disruption. What I do know is that we have so many opportunities now to deploy diplomacy and dialogue – forums and institutions where leaders come together to listen and be heard. And while that won’t solve all of the many issues we face, it does help lessen miscalculations, and reminds each other of what’s at stake.
