🚨A judge rejected Donald J. Trump’s bid to throw out the Manhattan district attorney’s criminal charges against him on Thursday and set a trial date for next month, clearing the way for the first prosecution of a former American president.
Per @nytimes reporting, the judge, Juan M. Merchan, announced the decision to begin jury selection at a hearing in a Lower Manhattan courtroom as Mr. Trump looked on from the defense table. The former president’s lawyers objected to the judge’s plan for jury selection to begin on March 25, noting that the six-week trial would conflict with Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign.
One of the former president’s lawyers, Todd Blanche, called the schedule “unfathomable.”
It will be the first of Mr. Trump’s criminal cases to go to trial. He faces 91 felony counts across four criminal indictments from prosecutors in Washington, Florida and Georgia, as well as Manhattan, all while he seeks to lock up the Republican presidential nomination.
🚨New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron on Friday ordered former president Donald Trump to pay more than $350 million in penalties, handing down a hefty penalty following a months-long civil trial in which Trump and others were accused of financial fraud by New York Attorney General Letitia James. Engoron also said Trump could not serve as an officer or a director for any New York company for three years. Trump has denied all wrongdoing and assailed the case.
According to @apnews reporting, Mr. Trump will appeal the financial penalty — which could climb to $400 million or more once interest is added — but will have to either come up with the money or secure a bond within 30 days. The ruling will not render him bankrupt, because most of his wealth is tied up in real estate.
Trump was not the only member of his family penalized Friday. Two of his adult children — Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, who were also defendants in the case — were fined $4 million each. Both men were also blocked from serving as an officer or director for any New York corporation for two years.
Mr. Trump has been indicted four times in the last year — accused in Georgia and Washington, D.C., of plotting to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden, in Florida of hoarding classified documents, and in Manhattan of falsifying business records related to hush money paid to porn actor Stormy Daniels on his behalf.
On Jan. 26, a jury ordered Trump to pay $83.3 million to writer E. Jean Carroll for defaming her after she accused him in 2019 of sexually assaulting her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s. That’s on top of the $5 million a jury awarded Carroll in a related trial last year.
In 2022, the Trump Organization was convicted of tax fraud and fined $1.6 million in an unrelated criminal case for helping executives dodge taxes on extravagant perks such as Manhattan apartments and luxury cars.
🚨One person was killed and at least nine others suffered gunshot wounds in a shooting at Kansas City’s Union Station just after the Kansas City Chiefs parade Wednesday, a fire department spokesperson said.
Of those injured, at least three are in critical condition, Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins said. He added that there may have been more victims as local hospitals have seen walk-ins, but officials are still working to confirm whether they were injured in the same incident at Union Station.
Two armed people have been detained, according to Kansas City police.
About 1 million paradegoers and 600 law enforcement officials were expected at Wednesday’s celebration.
This is a developing story with updates to come.

#TBT if that’s still a thing! Some snapshots from our incredible trip to Patagonia—#baraloche and @elca_lafate where we had 8 blissful days of communing with nature! What am incredible trip!!! I know some of you thought we were in Austria (The Sound of Music soundtrack WAS very misleading) but it was actually Argentina!!!! The first video is when I tried mate—rhymes with latte—a popular Argentinian drink made with herbs. I wasn’t a fan—I guess it’s kind of like Vegemite is for Aussies! We were so outdoorsy! Kayaking, horseback riding, hiking. We saw the third largest ice field in the world and Molner got to walk on the glacier, but because I’m over 65 I was deemed too old! 😡 I’m going to write all about our trip in the Saturday edition of Wake-Up Call. If you haven’t signed up, what are you waiting for? We have over a million subscribers in our community and it’s free! (Go to Katiecouric.com and sign up!!! Super easy!) Molner plans a fun adventure every year! Lucky me!!! 🛶🎣🐴🌄⛰️🍷🥩

🚨BREAKING NEWS: Alexei Navalny, the fiercest and most outspoken Russian critic of President Vladimir Putin has died in prison, Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service said on Friday. A spokesperson for Navalny said on X that they did not have any confirmation or information about his death.
Today on Morning Joe, Former ambassador to Russia @ambmcfaul said: “Putin killed Navalny. Let’s be crystal clear about that…Putin killed Navalny because he was the one opposition leader in Russia that Putin feared the most.”
According to prison officials, Navalny, 47, lost consciousness after taking a walk in the Arctic prison where he was moved late last year. “The facility’s medical staff immediately arrived and an ambulance brigade was called,” the penitentiary service’s statement said. “All necessary resuscitation measures were taken, which did not lead to positive results. The ambulance doctors confirmed the death of the convict.”
Navalny rose to prominence more than a decade ago by speaking publicly and documenting what he said was the vast corruption among the “crooks and thieves” who ran Putin’s Russia. He survived a poisoning attempt with a banned chemical nerve agent in August 2020 that the State Dept said was carried out by agents of the Russian state.
Navalny was serving a combined 30 1/2 year jail sentence when he died. He went missing in Russia’s penal system in December, eventually turning up at a high security penal colony in a remote town above the Arctic Circle.

@potus said there was “no doubt” that President Vladimir Putin’s government was behind the death of Alexei Navalny. “Make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death,” Biden said today.
Navalny’s lawyers and relatives are expected to arrive at the Arctic prison where he was being held tomorrow.
