Four days after the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, his widow, Yulia Navalnaya released a video statement vowing to continue Navalny’s work to fight for a “free Russia” and lead the fight against President Vladimir Putin.
Navalny’s death in prison was announced on Friday. Authorities at the Siberian penal colony where he was being held said he collapsed following a walk and never regained consciousness. Navalny’s mother was informed that his body was being held for “chemical analysis” and there’s been no confirmation of the whereabouts of the body from Russian authorities.
Today at 11:30 am EST, I’ll be talking to @newyorkermag journalist @susan.glasser about Navalny’s death and the subsequent developments, as well as Trump’s comments about NATO last week that sparked concern among allies. As always, drop your questions and comments below. 👇

Hi everyone from LA! I know you’ve been following the latest news about @realdonaldtrump and his comments about Russia and NATO, the murder of Alexei Navalny and @tuckercarlson ‘s fawning interview with Putin. As @susan.glasser of the @newyorkermag told me this is an existential crisis for democracy and the future of not only our country but the world. Please watch this conversation. This is critically important.
PS: Just wanted to note that Trump made a statement on Truth Social on Monday, barely mentioning Navalny’s death and excluding any mention of Vladimir Putin. Instead, he used Mr. Navalny’s death to suggest that his own legal battles amounted to political persecution. Here’s what he wrote: “The sudden death of Alexei Navalny has made me more and more aware of what is happening in our country. It is a slow, steady progression, with CROOKED, radical left politicians, prosecutors and judges leading us down a path to destruction.”

Please watch this conversation with former Ambassador to Russia and @stanford professor Michael McFaul. Today marks the two year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Yet, an aid package to Ukraine has been stalled as House Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to put it to a vote—encouraged by former President Trump. Meanwhile, opposition leader Alexei Navalny was murdered this week. This is a dire situation and we all must pay attention.
🚨The United States is imposing sanctions on more than 500 targets it says contribute to Russia’s war machine.
Per @npr reporting, the White House announced the move Friday, a day before the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions focus on Russia’s core financial infrastructure, as well as people and entities in other countries the U.S. says are helping supply Russia with critical technology and equipment, and to evade sanctions.
In a statement issued by the White House, President Biden said Ukraine is “running out of ammunition.” He called on the House of Representatives to approve new military aid for Ukraine, which is being blocked by Republicans.
“History is watching,” the president said. “The failure to support Ukraine at this critical moment will not be forgotten.”
The measures are the largest sanctions imposed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, the Treasury Department said.
Among the companies sanctioned is Russia’s state-owned National Payment Card System Joint Stock Co., which operates a payment system widely used in Russia, the Treasury said. Scores of Russian companies producing tanks, lasers and other technology for the war effort are also targeted.

🚨 After the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos can be considered children under state law late last week, @uabmedicine, a large Alabama hospital, announced it’s paused in vitro fertilization treatments, “as it evaluates the Alabama Supreme Court’s decision that a cryopreserved embryo is a human being.”
Friday’s ruling was issued in a pair of wrongful death cases brought by three couples who had frozen embryos destroyed in an accident at a fertility clinic. Justices, citing anti-abortion language in the Alabama Constitution, ruled that an 1872 state law allowing parents to sue over the death of a minor child “applies to all unborn children, regardless of their location.”
“This ruling is stating that a fertilized egg, which is a clump of cells, is now a person. It really puts into question, the practice of IVF,” Barbara Collura, CEO of @resolveorg, told @apnews Tuesday. The group called the decision a “terrifying development for the 1-in-6 people impacted by infertility” who need in-vitro fertilization.
She said it raises questions for providers and patients, including if they can freeze future embryos created during fertility treatment or if patients could ever donate or destroy unused embryos.
This is a developing story with updates to come.

🚨Former president Donald Trump has defeated former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley in her home state of South Carolina, @apnews projected. With the result, Trump continues his steady march toward the GOP presidential nomination, which could be clinched as early as March. As a former South Carolina governor, Nikki Haley had hoped to come from behind and score an upset.
Per @nytimes reporting, Mr. Trump has remained popular in South Carolina since his 2016 run, and polls ahead of the primary consistently showed him with double-digit leads. Ms. Haley has insisted she will stay in the race through Super Tuesday on March 5, arguing that she is providing an alternative for voters opposed to Mr. Trump and maintaining that Americans deserve a chance to choose a candidate. Donors have continued to pour money into her bid, giving her the cash to keep going.

We know it’s not a margarita for National Margarita Day, but this spicy paloma punch from @lideylikes has tequila in it, so it kinda counts, right? Spicy Paloma Punch recipe
(Makes 12 to 14 drinks)
– 4 cups freshly squeezed grapefruit juice (about 8 grapefruits, or bottled)
– 1 (750 ml) bottle good-quality tequila blanco or reposado
– 3/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (about 6 to 8 limes)
– 2/3 cup strained Jalapeño Simple Syrup (recipe follows)
– 1 grapefruit, quartered and thinly sliced crosswise, for serving
– 1 lime, thinly sliced, for serving
– Ice, for serving
– 1 1/2 cups unflavored sparkling water
– 12 to 14 slices candied jalapeño (from the simple syrup), for serving
1. In a large glass pitcher or punch bowl, combine the grapefruit juice, tequila, lime juice, and simple syrup and mix well. Add slices of grapefruit and lime to the pitcher and store, covered, in the fridge until you plan to serve the drinks.
2. Serve the punch in ice-filled glass tumblers, topped with a splash of sparkling water, a piece of candied jalapeño, and a slice of lime or grapefruit from the pitcher, for garnish.
—————————
Jalapeño Simple Syrup recipe
(Makes 1 1/2 cups)
– 1 cup thinly sliced jalapeño peppers (3 to 4 medium peppers)
– 1 cup granulated sugar
1. In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water and the jalapeños and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, add the sugar and stir until it’s completely dissolved. Simmer the syrup for 5 minutes over medium heat, until slightly reduced. Set aside for at least 1 hour to cool completely.
2. Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator. Remove the candied jalapeños after 1 hour and store separately until you’re ready to use. The longer the peppers sit in the syrup, the spicier the syrup will be.
In the wake of Alexei Navalny’s death, President Joe Biden announced more than 500 new sanctions on Russia.
@potus warned of the sanctions earlier this week after blaming Putin for Navalny’s death. Mr. Biden had said there was “no doubt” Putin’s government was responsible. On Thursday, he met with Navalny’s wife and his daughter, Yulia and Dasha Navalnaya, in California. He addressed the new sanctions at the White House on Friday.
“I assured them his legacy will continue to live around the world, and we in the United States are going to continue to ensure that Putin pays a price for his aggression abroad and repression at home,” Mr. Biden said while addressing the nation’s governors.
