#1000Girls Child marriage is one of the hardest things I learned more about in Uganda with @worldvisionnz It is a huge issue facing so many young girls in poverty. Girls as young as 12 or 13 are married off young, often in exchange for money that their families desperately need for food or to pay off debts. When they are married, they are usually pulled out of school, their futures taken away from them. Through child sponsorship, girls are educated. And educated girls are bold, confident, know their rights, are empowered, and have dreams. Poverty often removes your choices. Education offers more choice for young women. We met with a Girls Empowerment Group and a Children’s Rights Club. Supported by @worldvisionnz these groups help educate children about their rights and empower them to speak up the changes they want to see in their community. Child marriage is a huge issue facing young women in these areas, so access to education and support for young women is paramount to try break this cycle. A huge part of the work World Vision does is find solutions to keep girls in school. And so these empowerment groups also work to make sanitary pads for girls. Seeing this group of girls feel so empowered and stoked to have a solution to being able to attend school, learn about their body and their rights was incredible. Honestly it inspired me, I think we aren’t period proud enough, I still go to the bathroom with a tampon clenched in my hand… It’s amazing how with a bit of education and guidance that’s so many of these girls feel so proud and so empowered and are starting to design their own futures. Stella started her own restaurant and it’s thriving. She sources ingredients from local farmers and every day her place is packed with locals who need a meal. Stella is a single mother of two who’s involved in World Vision’s savings groups. These groups empower women to work together to get ahead. Since there are no banks near them that they can easily access, these women team up to create a fund they can borrow from and invest in. This has been incredibly successful for women like Stella. Women supporting women is what I am all about and Stella is creating positive waves in her community. I just loved witnessing it!
