@shailenewoodley visited @zakouma_national_park in Chad, which was recently featured in @BBCEarth. Shailene and BBC Planet Earth III cameraman Toby Strong, help tell the story of Zakouma’s transformation through their own eyes, as well as with conversations with a local guide, Brahmin Arabi.

Shailene said “I think it’s really inspiring when you hear stories of destruction and then you come to a place and see how much it’s thriving and how beautiful it is”. Toby continued “Everywhere we go [in Zakouma] we meet heroes, local people, who are laying their lives on the line to protect their little bit of nature, their wild animals. There are Zakouma’s all over this earth of impassioned, local people who need to be championed and supported”. Brahim who has been working as a local guide over the years said “The nature is a holding source of the country. But we need someone to look after it and keep it safe. The people feel safe. The elephants feel safe”.

African Parks entered into a long-term agreement with the government of Chad to manage @zakouma_national_park in 2010. Since that time, poaching has nearly been eliminated and for the first time in decades the elephant population (as well as for other key species) is on the rise, jobs have been created, schools have been built, and stability radiates from the park.

Kristin Bauer Instagram – This man has led a very unusual life and writes about it so well with such depth. I appreciate his feed so much.

Man lives in a mind dominated world, where the mind is in the drivers seat, and we sit with our hearts in the back of the bus not even knowing where we are, what we are, much less who we Truly are. This creates so much waste, suffering, cruelty, stupidity, pollution and destruction. I wish we could wake up to what we are.

It’s MAD, “Mutually Assured Destruction”. The threat of nuclear war annihilating both attacker and defender has kept us safe for generations. In our madness, we want pleasure without pain, wealth without poverty, health without sickness, action without effort, output without input, knowledge without learning, knowing without experience. Detached from reality, tired and worn out by worry and anxiety, we live on the edge of extinction.

In striving to make the world a better place, we have done incalculable damage to Earth’s ecosystems. Compelling ourselves by law to be superficially good and healthy has manifest more problems than solutions. Technologies like penicillin, dams, plastics, DDT, CFCs, nuclear power, industrial farming, and air travel have improved our lives immeasurably, but are taking away our basic freedoms. A tree isn’t made of wood, it is wood. We are the same.

We have been interfering with a complex system of relationships that we don’t understand. The more we study and model ecological systems, the more their true nature eludes us. As we try to comprehend and control the natural world it runs further away from us, or dwindles before we could know it. We have discovered that by watching an atom we change its behaviour and by observing galaxies they run away from us…?
