Maria Ho Instagram – Wow. What a ride. Winning Game of Gold is right up there with some of my proudest poker accomplishments. I’m so glad this show provided a format for me to show the different sides of who I am, from the intensity and fierceness with which I approach a competitive endeavor to just vibing out and having fun with my peers, to giving out so…. so many high-fives.
Poker is such a unique way of life, the act of playing can be so lonely and isolating at times. What stood out to me most in this competition was how a great team dynamic seemed to elevate the entire experience for me. The long-lasting friendships and memories from this are something I will take with me forever.
In a skill game with an element of luck, you never want to mistakenly attribute good gameplay when you get a good result, or blame the play of others when you get a not-so-good one. For me, a balance I constantly strive for is never to be complacent with what I’ve achieved but also not to let self-doubt take over after the times when I fall short. Poker has taught me so much about myself and has undoubtedly made me more resilient.
You’re not just as good as your last win or as bad of a player as your last mistake. The thing I love most about #poker is there’s always more to learn, and always room to improve. It’s a game that has humbled me time and time again, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
For a brief moment, though, I’ll let myself enjoy this win. It felt, to quote someone I just watched a lot of on YouTube, “F*cking amazing.” And then it’s back to learning more about this game that I love and the lessons it teaches me about life. To those who rooted for me along the way… thank you. I felt so much love in my corner these last few weeks, which is another aspect that I will forever cherish. To everyone involved- GG, the production team led by Spunky, Kay for taking care of us, the crew, and the dealers…thanks for all your efforts and for providing Jungle with a couch comfy enough to fall asleep on every day, and for keeping us a little too well-fed while we were locked in those rooms.
