#SayYes to CHANGE! ✂️💁🏾♀️ For most of my life I had long hair…not just kinda long.. but down to my ass, sit on it long. As a child, my hair took over more than half my body… and my mother would never let me cut it. It became a badge honor in our culture and in mainstream culture, a sign of beauty. Truthfully I never revered my hair as much as other people did, but I guess the overwhelming praise that came along with having long hair became a part of my identity. Who would I be if I didn’t have this long hair? Would people still view me the same? Would I lose the “signature” feature that so many people came to recognize me for?
I realized a lot of what I was holding me back from my big chop were the opinions and fears of everyone else. My hair was carrying the memories the energy and the trauma of every year that I had lived. So one day, without notice announcement or the opinions of others, I went to the salon and cut it off. I was ready. I didn’t need the permission or approval of anyone else except for myself and God.
THE RELEASE!!!!!! 🙌🏾 I instantly felt lighter…. Physically, spiritually, emotionally, energetically. I was desperate to feel different and seeing myself different was just the start. I LOVED IT. Shortly after this, I made several life decisions to sever ties with people and situations that were no longer aligned with the direction and goals I was seeking for myself. I dove deeper into my spirituality and creativity. It was beautiful time in my life… and has proven to be a pivotal decision and moment in my evolution. 💫

In 2019, @iamrobireed put in the call to ask if I was interested in playing THEE LEGENDARY ICON @chakakhan on @bet #AmericanSoul, #ImposterSyndrome took over my entire rational brain. I never saw myself as an actress…. And didn’t know anyone else did. I was completely intimidated at the idea of filling such big shoes on TV. I also was just coming out of the woods of being a new mom and not feeling my best about my body or my craft. 🥺
Oh! Did I mention, it would also mean I would re-record the songs in studio with @babyface?? 🐐🫠
I instantly began thinking of ways I would respectfully decline 🤡🙄…. GIRL! What is you doing???!!!!
I almost missed this moment of destiny because I was leading with fear and insecurity. Then I remembered every time someone told me throughout my career that I reminded them of a young Chaka… and what a great compliment it was to carry that likeness. This moment was MEANT, and all I had to do was #SayYes.
And I did. 💜
Accepting this opportunity turned out to be one of the greatest, most fun, and most memorable things I have ever done creatively and professionally. The process of studying, practicing and literally transforming for this role was an incredible lesson and reminder for me…
“I am capable of rising to any occasion because I KNOW I can!”

This is one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned from my children. They don’t care about the “No” that may be looming on the other side of permission. They go for it with full expectation that they will get what they want. I watched my daughter manage herself in this situation… I didn’t step in and regulate or control how much she was allowed to take. I let her self determine how much she should go for… and how many times it would take her to realize there were no limits… aka… “forget one or two cheese puffs… I’m taking the whole bag.”
Fascinating. 💡
This is the type of energy I’m on this year.
No limiting beliefs.
No small portions.

I woke up on this day feeling so low… I didn’t feel motivated or inspired to do much. If you truly know me, you know Reggae and Dancehall are my happy place 🙌🏾 so I got my body moving, buss a quick heel & toe in my bathroom, and made this my morning affirmation. We are often too focused on the external experiences that we can’t control… yet often fail to remember that we have complete control in how we allow ourselves to be affected by them. The key is having tools that help you manage how to respond (or how not to respond). 🧰 ❤️🩹

We talk a lot about the power of “no”…. how it’s “a complete sentence” and how boundaries have become our new super power. We find so much empowerment and pride in what we will refuse and what we won’t accept. Albeit true, I challenge these truths by conversely asking,
“What WILL you allow?” ✨
This year, I’m shifting my intention full throttle to affirmation… to the power of saying YES! It should go without saying, that this doesn’t mean I’ll agree to just any and everything … but rather, saying YES to all that presents itself with the purpose, assistance or challenge of helping me ascend to the greatest version of myself.
When I think about every remarkable thing I’ve accomplished in my life, it took me saying “YES”… despite fear, risk, failure, trauma staring me in the face trying to dissuade me from my achieving my wildest dreams.
I’ve learned that YES holds the transformative power to reshape our lives. It’s a nod to the unknown. Saying YES is an act deeply rooted in trust and faith—an allowance and acceptance to surrender to the belief that embracing the unknown can lead to wonderful things. Reframing our relationship with saying YES, allows a clear path for the energy to work in our favor… and helps to define a clear designation for anything that isn’t aligned with yes! Feel me?
YES requires courage.
YES requires conviction.
YES is a definitive commitment.
This year, everything I create, share and explore will be a reflection of my power to #SAYYES ~ and in that, I affirm and must trust myself in a way I never have before.
