Sophia Bush Instagram – What a year. My whole life I’ve heard the saying “put your own oxygen mask on first” and this year I learned what it meant. This past year humbled me, broke me, built me, betrayed me, freed me, and showed me what it means to really be alive. No more playing small. No more turning my back on myself. No more settling for what falls short because “who am I to ask for more?” This year put me back in my body. I left it a long time ago, in such a way that I forgot what it felt like to inhabit my own skin. I feel my whole self from the tops of my ears to the tips of my toes now. It’s breathtaking. Life giving. Affirming. This year taught me to listen to myself and no one else. To let go of expectation that wounds and grasp possibility that frees. To not care about optics and instead invest in honesty. The truest and deepest and purest kind. This year sent me inward. More than I’ve ever been. It took me out of relationship with many of you but put me back into relationship with myself. I hope you are all doing well, but for this quiet and deeply personal experience I am supremely grateful. This year reminded me that we work like waves. Sometimes we explode in symphonic beauty up front, sometimes we line up at the back of the rolling set, cheering and drumming and watching others make magic as they spray and exclaim ahead of us. Watching from the rear these past months has been a gift. It has been rest and reclamation. I hope you get to experience both, too. I hope you get a year that jolts you. That brings you back from the edge. That gives you medicine. This year the pages of Maggie Smith’s book saved my life. This year I started writing again. Almost every day. I found my inner voice, and got quiet enough to listen to it. This year I slowed down; first because illness forced me to. Second because recovery required more stillness. In that way both sickness and healing are a gift. For those gifts I am so grateful. Thank you, thank you, thank you to this life for teaching me. And, friends, while we are at it? This is a film @ava made it because it needed to be made. Because it called to her. Which means she made outside of the studio system. And that means it’s harder for it to reach people. She spoke with me about this on @workinprogress this week and it really hit home…

Sophia Bush Instagram – As this week comes to a close I have to thank @ava for joining me on @workinprogress to discuss @originmovie. We spoke to each other on Tuesday and my head and heart are still full and spinning. I continue to catch myself with goosebumps rushing up my arms as I think about the vulnerability she shared, and the sweeping profundity of this piece of art that she made.
ORIGIN manages to take the incredible academic work of @isabelwilkerson and turn it into a narrative about a brilliant women pulling at the thread of what makes us human — and how we humans have been to each other throughout history — and her own, individual yet universal experiences with the deeply human milestones of love, loss, grief, and a search for meaning. Wilkerson’s book, CASTE, sat atop the best seller list for a year because it blew hearts and minds wide open. She showed us that caste is the basis of every -ism we create to “other” people we deem different. And it’s only when the problem is really examined, under sunlight, that we might begin to find a collective way to fix it. A collective liberation.
The book will change you. And somehow Ava distilled its story into a film that will change you too. It will crack your heart open and make you want to know more, do more, and be better in this world. EVERYONE needs to see it. And I know every one of you will be moved to hear our conversation about it. From how she managed to make this film when studios were too intimidated by the scope of it to say yes. She said yes and made it true.
