Brittany Lee Lewis Instagram - There’s so much pressure on women, especially if we’re “serious about our career” to cover-up and monitor what we wear and what we post. Even if we go on vacations, wear swimsuits, and take fun pictures, we’re still supposed to adhere to respectability. In this world, they can sell our bodies but shame us for wearing them. We’re told that we can’t be credible and successful while also being beautiful or, dare I say… sexy. Regardless, respectability ain’t my thing. Those aren’t my politics. Besides, any space or institution that wants to confine me or any of us to 1950 womanhood tropes isn’t a place I’d want to be in (although I recognize it’s a privilege to have that choice). We don’t need to conform to these unrealistic, one-dimensional, antiquated norms. Instead, let’s continue to embrace the multi-layered humans that we are. So here’s to all of us women living freely, breaking boundaries, owning and loving our bodies in all the ways ((we)) see fit.

Swipe to see some of the ways these issues still persist.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Today is also my sister's heavenly birthday. Gina should be celebrating her 40th. To my family’s horror, she was murdered by her ex-fiancé on March 27, 2010.

Raising awareness about domestic violence is important to me. But it should be important to you too. Why? Because I could have never imagined in a million years that a woman so “independent” and “intelligent” as my sister could ever become a victim.  But it is exactly those problematic stereotypes that we must drop as a society. Victims of domestic violence do not look, sound, and act alike, and ANYONE can become a victim.

We must continue to educate ourselves and move away from a culture of victim blaming. Perhaps one of the most exhausting remarks I hear is, “why didn’t she just leave?” But we’re asking the wrong question here. You don’t ask the victim why they are victimized. You ask the batterer why they batter.

Despite the overwhelming majority of victims that are stuck in abusive relationships because of financial control, the millions that are connected to their abuser through their children, and the unconceivable cycle of fear and trauma through this coercive pattern of psychological control that our victims face…my sister did leave the relationship. But often, leaving is just not enough. She was part of the 1 in 7 women that are stalked by an intimate partner.

Please take a moment to learn about domestic violence. Please teach your children about healthy relationships. Please correct people when they victim blame. Hold abusers accountable. It’s important. It’s important for the 1.3 million women that fall victim each year, but it’s even more important for the parents that had to bury their daughter, for the sister who lost her best friend, and for the children who will navigate their childhood and the rest of their life without a parent.

I miss you, Gina. Until we meet again. 💜🙏🏽

Brittany Lee Lewis Instagram - Brittany Lee Lewis made history as the 49th Miss Black America, walking in the legacy of former winners like Oprah Winfrey and Toni Braxton and continuing the legacy of Black protest via the country’s first nationally televised pageant for Black women. Brittany’s national title dovetailed perfectly as an African-American, urban, and U.S. 20th-century history professor. Today, Brittany utilizes her platform as a thought leader through her role as a community activist, public speaker, and television personality.
Brittany completed her undergraduate studies at Temple University, where she earned degrees in Broadcast, Telecommunications, Mass Media, and African-American Studies. After graduating, she was accepted into the highly competitive Teach for America program. Through the program, she obtained a Master of Secondary Education degree and graduated with distinction.

Brittany is a professor of Ethnic Studies at Wilmington University and a Ph.D. candidate in the History Department at George Washington University. She specializes in social movements, political ideology, and the nation-state. Since her time in graduate school, she has worked as the chairperson of the George Washington University branch of the D.C. History Graduate Student Association, social media chair of The Activist History Review (TAHR), member of Yale’s Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society, and Graduate Student Labor Union. Brittany is also the recipient of the George Washington University’s Herber Prize for Best Teaching. She has taught African American Women’s History 1850-1990, The Black Woman, American Slavery & Its Legacies, African American History to 1861, and African American History from 1861. Her most recent publication, “White Philanthropy Won’t Save Black Education: Tracing an “Ordinary” Segregated School’s Life in Delaware,” can be found in the Journal of Black Studies.

In addition to her academic and pageant endeavors, Brittany is a political commentator and host. She’s a regular contributor for Fox5 DC, Revolt TV, CGTN, Roland Martin Show, R.T. News, and a range of syndicated shows through the Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Brittany Lee Lewis Instagram - It is with the most profound grief that I share the news that my father has passed away. Most people joked that he was "aging backward." Longevity was in his genes, as his mother recently celebrated her 102nd birthday. Thus, we never anticipated such a heartbreaking loss as he was always so full of life. He took his final breath at 11:56am yesterday, February 15, 2022, while surrounded by love.

The pain of this reality is indescribable. While so many knew him as Chef Willie, I knew him as my father, protector, backbone, best friend, and the most important person in my life. We had an unshakable bond.

I've set up a GoFundMe to raise money for my father's final expenses, including creating a scholarship fund in his honor and completing several of his culinary projects. He did so much for so many but spent little time building for himself. If you knew and loved him, in lieu of flowers, please donate to this memorial fund so that his memory and legacy live on. He should still be here, but if God requires him to leave this world, he deserves to live on in a way befitting of his immense goodness—reflecting the many lives he touched.

In the coming weeks, I will share details regarding funeral arrangements. Thank you for your continued love and support. 💕
Brittany Lee Lewis Instagram - 2022 was filled with incredible highs and one of my darkest moments. Thank you God for always carrying me through. Grateful 🙏🏽

Cheers to 2023 🥂Grace & Gratitude

Brittany Lee Lewis Instagram - I had a fantastic stay at the @guildhousehotel in Philadelphia! As a historian, I’m obsessed with this beautifully refurbished boutique hotel and national historic landmark. Travel + Leisure Magazine named Guild House one of the world's best new hotels!

HISTORY:
In 1882 a group of bold, forward-thinking women formed a club called the New Century Guild to support the growing number of working women in the city. The women of the Guild were an impressive group that included abolitionists, suffragists, activists, artists, writers, and more. As the group gained momentum throughout the end of the 19th century, they moved their headquarters a number of times. In 1906 they finally landed in the elegant Victorian manse at 1307 Locust Street — the same property that today holds Guild House hotel. For more than a century, the stately four-story rowhome was a hub of education, activism, and camaraderie for women who were out in the world making history.

Today, each luxurious Guild House room pays tribute to the intriguing women of the New Century Guild. Guests discover a different story in each of their twelve expansive salons and suites, all of which were designed by the female-owned-and-operated ROHE Creative.

ACCOMMODATIONS & PERKS:
-Five-star boutique hotel
-Impeccable “invisible” service: on call 24 hours a day
-Guests are texted a passcode to enter the building and their room before their stay (easy virtual check-in)
-Luxury amenities
-Curated experiences and personalized perks

MINORITY-OWNED PARTNERSHIPS:
To honor the legacy of social progress, community, and equality that the New Century Guild embodied for more than a century, they’ve partnered with minority-owned businesses in Philly and beyond.

See why I love it?! If you’re traveling to Philadelphia or if you’re from the area and want to plan a little staycation, I highly recommend this wonderful gem of a hotel. ✨💚

Brittany Lee Lewis Instagram - I had an AMAZING time judging the Miss Utah and Miss Colorado pageants! Thank you, Carly Condie, Landon Tooke, Nicole Kielbasa, Whitney Thomas, Madison Wilson, Valerie McKee, Camille Cottle, Jessica Orvin, Larry Razal, Mark Hinson, Mette Boving Castor, and Stacey James, for having me. They did an excellent job hosting and curating fantastic shows. Also, a huge thank you to my forever Miss Colorado, Stacey Putka, and forever Miss Utah, Karlie Major, for showing me around Denver and Salt Lake City!

While I was on the road, I met some fabulous fellow judges that I now call friends: Rachel Parcell, Najla Amundson, David Clegg, Dan Ellis, Kelly McKee Kucera, Daryl Schabinger, Tim Stevens, and James Klump! I also had the opportunity to listen to, engage with, and learn from two groups of beautiful, talented, and intelligent women competing for their state titles. I was truly blown away. They are the future. Congratulations to Savannah Cavanaugh and Lindsey Larsen!! I’m looking forward to watching you both compete in Miss America. Last and certainly not least, I’m so glad I had the opportunity to spend time with our current Miss America, Emma Broyles. You are one of the most talented and kindest people I’ve ever met. I hope you continue to have a wonderful year of service! 💕👑 #MissUtah #MissColorado #MissAmerica #Pageants

Brittany Lee Lewis - 1.8K Likes - There’s so much pressure on women, especially if we’re “serious about our career” to cover-up and monitor what we wear and what we post.

Caption : TW: Domestic Violence October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Today is also my sister’s heavenly birthday. Brittany Lee Lewis - 1.2K Likes - Brittany Lee Lewis made history as the 49th Miss Black America, walking in the legacy of former winners like Oprah Winfrey and Toni Braxton and continuing the legacy of Black protest via the country’s first nationally televised pageant for Black women.

RSVP LINK 🔗 in @pvoglobal bio

Brittany Lee Lewis - 1.2K Likes - It is with the most profound grief that I share the news that my father has passed away.

Brittany Lee Lewis - 1.1K Likes - I had a fantastic stay at the @guildhousehotel in Philadelphia!

It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

Brittany Lee Lewis - 1K Likes - I had an AMAZING time judging the Miss Utah and Miss Colorado pageants!
