Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I have officially joined the world of social media. My hope is to give you a glimpse into my life and journey in making the most interesting film of my career @megalopolisfilm

One of the greatest surprises in life is when you realize you’re elderly. But there’s a gentle comfort coming from that, as everyone loves stories and long ago adventures told by their Grandpa.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - My nephew Nicolas always pulls a wonderful performance out of his hat, even as a little kid he could imitate a computer. His work in Michael Sarnoski’s “Pig” and his most recent performance in Kristoffer Borgli’s “Dream Scenario" is beyond an old Uncle's praise.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - A piece of Al Pacino’s audition tape for the role of Michael Corleone in The Godfather.

The interesting thing here, was a reason given to me against casting Pacino was not only was he too short, but also too ‘scruffy’.

So we got him a haircut and dressed him more non-scruffy and more collegiate, and then the criticism was he so cleaned up, he lost some of his natural appeal. I realized they just didn’t want Al no matter whether tall or short, scruffy or collegiate.

The first “too scruffy” haircut was given to him by my wife Ellie. For the second haircut, we went to a local barber and he found out it was for a “Godfather” actor, he had a heart-attack. (The barber really had a heart-attack and was taken off to hospital afterwards)

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - The first photo is from the set of The Godfather Part II, filming a birds-eye shot. The second, is a crane rig on the set of @megalopolisfilm 50 years later.

Although The Godfather Part II was complex, involving seven time-periods/settings: Lake Tahoe, old NYC, new NYC, Hollywood, Las Vegas, Havana and Sicily - it was the most smooth making of all my films.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I’ve always admired David in every possible way: his originality, his imagination, his beautiful work extending in every direction, including my priceless & irreplaceable possession: a small night table he designed and made.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Please sign this petition to bring justice to Iranian filmmaker, Saeed Roustayi. Link in stories and bio.

Saeed Roustayi has been sentenced to six-months in prison on charges of “anti-regime propaganda activity” for screening his film, LEILA’S BROTHERS at the prestigious 2022 Cannes International Film Festival. He’s set to serve nine days and the rest of the sentence “will be suspended for over five years,” according to the Iranian daily Etemad and Radio Free Europe. During that time, he will effectively be prohibited from filmmaking and required to take a filmmaking course for the sake of “preserving national and ethical interests.”

Roustayi, gained international acclaim for his film LAW OF TEHRAN (AKA JUST 6.5) which examined Iran’s drug problem and the brutal and ineffective response from police.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - The brilliant @officialspikelee visited me today. I was more than happy to sign some posters and books for his upcoming exhibit at the @brooklynmuseum and show him a chunk of @megalopolisfilm
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I once said the things you do when you’re young that you get fired for are the same things that, years later, they give you lifetime achievement awards for. I thought it was going to be a failure. When you make a film going against the grain of what’s going on at the time, those kind of films are tough. You’re not doing what everyone expects or wants you to do.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - My beloved nephew Jason has had an incredible year of cinematic achievements. From “Asteroid City” to “Across The Spider-Verse” to his role as a Cantor in the upcoming, “Between The Temples” which just premiered at Sundance, his versatility is a mark of true talent. I am blessed to have him included in the cast of @megalopolisfilm .

As a kid, Jason was a wonderful little boy who enjoyed his cousin Roman lifting him up in the air. Roman was also the first to put drumsticks in Jason’s hands.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - It's impossible to imagine what a proud Daddy I am, not only for SOFIA's latest work PRISCILLA, but for all of her great films!

Which one is your favorite?
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Two wonderful people: Al and Bob, yes friends and colleagues but very different from one another and thus actors who approach the roles they've played differently.

Their methods each exacting -- Al will write all his dialogue as he himself might say it, study that and then translate it back into the original dialogue. Bobby meticulously chooses everything his character might touch or wear. The result may well be making the roles exceedingly personal to them. Regardless of the approach, they have given magnificent performances throughout their careers.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - My longtime friend @martinscorsese_ has a new film coming out this month, “Killers of the Flower Moon” -  He is a wonderful person and the world’s greatest living filmmaker. His new film delivers on every level.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Our culture condones “this is better than that” but that’s not true in art. There is no score in art as there is in sports.

Even Ben Jonson quibbled about Shakespeare’s shortcomings. But today we think they’re both giants! Tolstoy said he was better than either of them.

The only factor that can hold sway over what’s truly a masterpiece is the test of TIME.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I was friends with Jim Morrison when we were film students at UCLA…

He was a very warm and kind person, very considerate, interesting, and had a strong interest in philosophy. His father made a big impression on him, he was a naval Admiral, commander of an aircraft carrier.

One night they (The Doors) brought me their record and I listened to “Light My Fire.” Two years later, they were a big deal.

On the set of APOCALYPSE NOW, one of my editors, Barry Malkin, was set to go home on a Saturday (I was still shooting), and I visited the editing room before he left. I saw a bin that was filled with The Doors’ songs and noticed one with the title “The End” and jokingly said, “Wouldn’t it be interesting if we started the beginning of the movie with a song called The End?” I then reached into the bin of what was to be scrapped footage and just pulled out anything. It turned out to be some film showing helicopters sliding by the flames of the big napalm drop in the “Battle of the Valkyries” scene. And I liked it, so I made it the beginning.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - It’s so silly in life not to pursue the highest possible thing you can imagine, even if you run the risk of losing it all. You can’t be an artist and be safe.

Thank you to to @manohladargis for the wonderful conversation for @nytimes
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I was always delighted that my friend George Lucas supposedly based the iconic character of “Han Solo” on me.

To George, everything in his life was sort of the inspiration for what he used. His Alaska Malamute dog INDIANA used to sit next to him in his Camaro car and was the inspiration for the "Wookie" and later for “Indiana Jones.”

In 1973 a young carpenter was fitting a door for American Zoetrope at Goldwyn Studios when my colleague Fred Roos asked him to help out by reading the lines written for a film called “American Graffiti.” That carpenter was Harrison Ford.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - William Friedkin was my first friend among the filmmakers of my generation and I grieve for the loss of a  much-loved companion. His accomplishments in Cinema are extraordinary and unique. He is the only colleague I knew whose work actually saved a man’s life (THE PEOPLE VS PAUL CRUMP). Billy’s work represents true milestones in Cinema, a list which will never be forgotten; certainly THE FRENCH CONNECTION, THE EXORCIST and SORCERER, but all of his films are alive with his genius.  Pick any of them out of a hat and you’ll be dazzled. His lovable, irascible  personality was cover for a beautiful, brilliant,  deep-feeling giant of a man. It’s very hard to grasp that I will never enjoy his company again, but his work will at least stand in for him.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Today marks the 44th anniversary “Apocalypse Now”

This was a film that started in some controversy: was it great? was it the worst? but aside from that question, audiences kept going to see it, even after they had seen it a few times. And the audiences built in numbers and continued going right up to today. Thank you for all of the support.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Happy 49th Birthday to The Godfather Part II

Shooting it was enjoyable, but six weeks before it was set to open, we had a preview in San Francisco which was a disaster. The film was always a challenge in that it was told in two parallel stories, one of Michael and one of young Vito, back and forth every ten minutes. But the SF audience seemed disoriented, and I realized ten minutes was too short, and the parallel stories needed to be twice as long, back and forth every twenty minutes. So we took this finished movie, and working through two nights, the editors made 120 picture cuts, and just got it done for the next preview, which was in San Diego. That version got a great reaction and was the version that opened three weeks later in New York. Same movie, same actors, same scenes, yet SF was a disaster, and San Diego a winner. Whew, happy 49th birthday to The Godfather Part II !
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I am more than proud of my daughter @sofiacoppola and excited by the reaction to the premiere of her film @priscillamovie receiving such a long standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival @labiennale this past weekend!
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Many people ask me about the various arrangements/versions of THE GODFATHER films…

In my mind there is only one film, THE GODFATHER (Parts I and II) and an epilogue or ‘Coda’ THE DEATH OF MICHAEL CORLEONE. (I did not originate the idea of the “chronological” version of the story, which was created for a one-time television viewing. I thought this wouldn’t work well, as the Part II version used past and future in an intrinsic way.)

I am forever grateful for the longevity and appreciation of these films and salute all who originally contributed to their integrity.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - The great Robert De Niro auditioning for the role of Sonny Corleone in 1971.

I was very impressed … and in fact when the role was given to Jimmy Caan, he was supposed to play ‘Paulie Gatto’ but then was up for a bigger role in “THE GANG WHO COULDN’T SHOOT STRAIGHT” and wanted to take the sure thing, and yet go for this part. So I told him “I’ll hold the Paulie part for you so if you don’t get the “gang” part, don’t worry.” But he got the Part.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Advice for aspiring filmmakers: I don’t think there’s any artist of any value who does not doubt what they’re doing.

I was a young father of two children with a third on the way, and I was already in debt due to my dream of being an independent filmmaker of small art films. George Lucas, my cofounder of our struggling company, American Zoetrope, emphatically told me, “You have to accept this job. We have no money and the sheriff is coming to chain up the front door.” And so I accepted the offer to direct “The Godfather,” which surprisingly had been turned down by the best directors of the time, including Elia Kazan—probably the best director of acting in the entire history of cinema.

I’d recommend reading Kazan’s chapter in “Directors on Directing” by Toby Cole.

Regarding casting, I never make detailed notes, because the type of person who “sticks in your mind” has that unique ingredient, which also sticks in the audience’s mind.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I cordially invite all of my friends and followers to creatively “caption” the photo above!
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Good acting and writing are the oxygen and hydrogen of cinema. If you don’t have either of them, it will be impossible to have a good movie. And if you have both of them, then other weaknesses will be almost irrelevant.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - This week marks the 40th anniversary of Rumble Fish.

I made Rumble Fish as an art film for kids. I wanted to demonstrate all the tools, choices, and wonders of cinema for young people. At the beginning I felt I had failed, as the film certainly didn’t overwhelm at the box-office, but later I learned it had done exactly what I had hoped: influence a young audience to want to make personal film and even to write novels.

For some mysterious reason, the film remained for almost a year in some theaters in South America and inspired many young artists to be novelists and filmmakers. This was attested to by the film “Locaciones: Buscando a Rusty James” a personal documentary about the influence of Rumble Fish, and was a milestone of Alberto Fuguet's creative work, as a writer and filmmaker.

To me, there is no higher achievement than inspiring young people to create, just as I was inspired by so many before me.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - This photo is of me trying to control TIME.

In my films, I’ve always been curious about TIME. In Rumblefish it was a central theme, but in my own life as well, I realized that I am ruled by something which is unreliable, interpretable and not at all as constant as it pretends to be. And perhaps doesn’t even exist. In my childhood, I realized it goes fast when you're enjoying things (summer vacation) and slow when you are suffering. Once waking up in the past with an unforgettable young lady, I wished to STOP TIME, and I think I did. That memory became for me the experience and focus of @megalopolisfilm , leading to realization that all Artists control time. The earliest painters STOP time (Goethe said “Architecture is frozen music”), dancers combine Time with Space; and musicians rhythmize it. So I’ve concluded and vow “I will not let TIME have dominion over my thoughts!” Frankly I don’t believe time exists, only duration, which for a while in various drafts I named my heroine, Durèe.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - How often do I think of Ancient Rome? Quite a lot, as the Roman Republic served as the example for my country America and its institutions, and was the inspiration for my upcoming film @megalopolisfilm .

My fascination with the Roman Republic is based on the struggle between the political parties during which the interest of the Republic yielded to the ambitions of a few powerful men who espoused the aims of political parties to establish their own fortunes and authority by relying upon armed forces to achieve those ends, dealing the final blow to a constitution already tottering to its fall.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - A press conference about “Apocalypse Now” at the Cannes Film Festival in 1979. I was pretty nervous and excited to be at Cannes after years of put downs of the film, calling it “Apocalypse When”…
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Talking about the scene on the set of The Outsiders VS talking about the scene on the set of @megalopolisfilm 40 years later.

On The Outsiders, I deliberately divided the actors into two groups on set - the Greasers and the Socs, so that their living conditions, meals and housing were ‘priviledged’ or ‘disadvantaged’, breeding the sense of inequality in the book. In the mornings, we all did Tai Chi with a professional instructor together every working day, to also build a sense of togetherness. My way of working tries to give actors an advantage any way possible.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - In honor of Halloween, a post about “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”.

When I was a 19-year-old drama camp counselor, I would read my campers the original 1897 version of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” to put them to sleep, so I could then sneak out to visit my girlfriend who was a counselor at a nearby girls camp.

I loved as a kid to go with my older brother to see the Dracula movies, including “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.”  Our favorite Dracula, believe it or not, was John Carradine. But those movies didn’t really adapt the book.

It was an overall great experience making “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.” Gary Oldman portrayed the old Count in a new and innovative way.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Past, Present, or Future?
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I first became aware of Ridley Scott with his film THE DUELLISTS. I was impressed, and realizing he was my contemporary began following his work, which was prodigious to say the least.

One after the other, different styles, themes — all ambitious and never stopping, absolutely great films like BLADE RUNNER, THELMA & LOUISE, ALIEN, and BLACK HAWK DOWN. I realize he has been knighted for his extraordinary work, but he should be given a Dukedom for such outstanding quality output. I never really got to meet him, aside from a few phone calls arranging the bargain sale of the neon sets from my own ONE FROM THE HEART, which live on forever in his unforgettable BLADE RUNNER. Ridley’s MATCHSTICK MEN featured another great performance from our own Nicolas Cage!

Sir Ridley is actually a couple of years older than me, yet his amazing productivity remains with films like THE LAST DUEL and an upcoming sequel to GLADIATOR.

There have been rare artists who astounded everyone with their best work while in their eighties, like Giuseppe Verdi, but we must take our hats off to Ridley. I am excited to see his new film in IMAX, NAPOLEON, and have no doubt it is spectacular!
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I don’t remember ever doing this, but I see my beard is black so it must’ve been a long time ago. In those days it was common to do commercials that wouldn’t be shown in America.

I agree with the tagline: “Good sound affects the heart”
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - My favorite Christmas Movie? Home movies.

I do like IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, like everybody.

I have always loved Alexander Korda’s THE THIEF OF BAGDAD.  How is this a Christmas film, you ask? It’s not. It’s just a film I loved so much that it was the ultimate treat. In it there’s the handsome Caliph (who reminds me of my brother, August) and the kid Sabu (me) and “we” go on a magical adventure together (my greatest dream).

The first 2 photos show the comparison in my imagination (August on the left and me on the right).

I also enjoy Vittorio De Sica’s MIRACLE IN MILAN.

I would like to wish everyone a happy holiday!

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - I hear the ‘mob wife aesthetic’ is making a come back…

The inspiration for the style of @diane_keaton ‘s character KAY was my wonderful wife Eleanor and I knew that Diane had taken Ellie as an example.

On the other hand, the style of my sister, Talia Shire’s character CONNIE CORLEONE was a sultry, delightful Italian princess.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - One rule of business I’ve always followed and prioritized (to my benefit) is to continue working with companies and teams who over time have proven to be good friends as well as great collaborators. This is why I am thrilled to have Adam Fogelson and @lionsgate Studios release ‘Megalopolis.’ I am confident they will apply the same tender love and care given to ‘Apocalypse Now,’ which is currently in its 45th year of astounding revenue and appreciation.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - A Brief description of my writing process and why I decided to make @megalopolisfilm - from a recent interview with @gq
.
In the Conspiracy, the figure of Catiline was mysteriously evil. But knowing that who loses a historical struggle, usually is depicted as evil, by the winner (Cleopatra a good example) my own thought was, what if Catiline in my mind was so progressive that others who opposed him were painted him as evil?
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Robert Towne was one of the ‘big brothers’ I searched for all my life. The first & only person who told me THE GODFATHER wasn’t a failure, and who suggested a new scene between Michael and his father, and then wrote it. I thanked him throughout my career and thank him once again, now that I’ve lost him. Thank you dear Robert, for all the encouragement and support you gave  me, I will never forget.
Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - @michelgondry made the amazing film ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. To say it was a great film is saying too little to describe it. Yet, this extraordinarily gifted artist has been unable to realize his wish, to make a film of Philip K. Dick’s UBIK. Now that he’s abandoned the project, we who love cinema are the losers. If there’s any way at all that he can relight the passion to go on with it, we will all be the winners.

Francis Ford Coppola Instagram - Paul Muni is arguably the greatest actor of modern times, and as Marlon Brando said, his own inspiration for what acting really was. Muni (who came from the Yiddish Theater) in a series of remarkable film portrayals, played the Italian gangster in Scarface, the French chemist Louis Pasteur, the Mexican Indian President Benito Juárez, and French novelist Emile Zola.

If there were a rule that specific people couldn’t play certain roles, the greatest performances in the cinema would never have happened.

I thought it was going to be a failure. When you make a film going against the grain of what’s going on at the time, those kind of films are tough. You’re not doing what everyone expects or wants you to do.

I am blessed to have him included in the cast of @megalopolisfilm .

As a kid, Jason was a wonderful little boy who enjoyed his cousin Roman lifting him up in the air. Roman was also the first to put drumsticks in Jason’s hands.

Even Ben Jonson quibbled about Shakespeare’s shortcomings. But today we think they’re both giants! Tolstoy said he was better than either of them.

The only factor that can hold sway over what’s truly a masterpiece is the test of TIME.

Francis Ford Coppola - 45.7K Likes - I was friends with Jim Morrison when we were film students at UCLA…

Francis Ford Coppola - 38K Likes - Happy 49th Birthday to The Godfather Part II

Francis Ford Coppola - 36.6K Likes - Many people ask me about the various arrangements/versions of THE GODFATHER films…

Francis Ford Coppola - 32.2K Likes - Advice for aspiring filmmakers: I don’t think there’s any artist of any value who does not doubt what they’re doing.

Francis Ford Coppola - 29.5K Likes - This week marks the 40th anniversary of Rumble Fish.

This was attested to by the film “Locaciones: Buscando a Rusty James” a personal documentary about the influence of Rumble Fish, and was a milestone of Alberto Fuguet’s creative work, as a writer and filmmaker.    To me, there is no higher achievement than inspiring young people to create, just as I was inspired by so many before me.

Francis Ford Coppola - 29.4K Likes - This photo is of me trying to control TIME.

Francis Ford Coppola - 28.1K Likes - How often do I think of Ancient Rome? Quite a lot, as the Roman Republic served as the example for my country America and its institutions, and was the inspiration for my upcoming film @megalopolisfilm .

My fascination with the Roman Republic is based on the struggle between the political parties during which the interest of the Republic yielded to the ambitions of a few powerful men who espoused the aims of political parties to establish their own fortunes and authority by relying upon armed forces to achieve those ends, dealing the final blow to a constitution already tottering to its fall.

Francis Ford Coppola - 26.3K Likes - In honor of Halloween, a post about “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”.

Francis Ford Coppola - 26K Likes - I first became aware of Ridley Scott with his film THE DUELLISTS.

Francis Ford Coppola - 24.8K Likes - My favorite Christmas Movie?

Caption : My favorite Christmas Movie?

The inspiration for the style of @diane_keaton ‘s character KAY was my wonderful wife Eleanor and I knew that Diane had taken Ellie as an example.

On the other hand, the style of my sister, Talia Shire’s character CONNIE CORLEONE was a sultry, delightful Italian princess.

Yet, this extraordinarily gifted artist has been unable to realize his wish, to make a film of Philip K. Dick’s UBIK. Now that he’s abandoned the project, we who love cinema are the losers. If there’s any way at all that he can relight the passion to go on with it, we will all be the winners.

If there’s any way at all that he can relight the passion to go on with it, we will all be the winners.

Francis Ford Coppola - 19.1K Likes - Paul Muni is arguably the greatest actor of modern times, and as Marlon Brando said, his own inspiration for what acting really was.
