Jim Baird Instagram - There’s something so primal about canoe tripping. You’re only focus is food, shelter, water, warmth and getting yourself from point A to B. No phones, no internet, no “modern world” distractions. It really forces you to be in the moment and gives you a greater respect for Mother Nature, because she’s in charge. Canoe tripping is challenging, fulfilling, unpredictable, serene, scary and beautiful. It builds muscle, resilience and character. It encourages connection and disconnection. Some people think we’re crazy for taking our kids on trips like this (myself included sometimes), while others think it’s inspiring. Jim Baird Instagram - Well I got my hunting licence and PAL last year so I suppose it’s only fitting that Santa brought me my first gun. Santa swears it wasn’t really just a gift for him. 😉 Jim and I went out for a little skeet shooting a few days after Christmas and threw about 100 skeet’s. After quite a few misses I found my groove and was hitting them fairly consistently which I felt good about for my first time out. My arm was sore the next day but I’m looking forward to getting in some good target practise so I can start helping to fill the freezer. #benelli #benellinova #20gauge

Jim Baird Instagram - This past Oct., @heatherbairdoutdoors @ted.baird @torigoesoutside and I hauled an extension ladder around in the bush to access some big specimens of Chaga that were growing way up in the birch trees that the fungus calls home. We made sure not to cut it all off, leaving some on the tree so that it will regrow. Chaga is a medicinal mushroom that makes a good tea, particularly when a little honey or maple syrup is added. We finally got around to processing it yesterday by cutting it into small chunks with my Commercial Series Butcher Knife by @coldsteelknives and then blasting it up into powder with a coffee grinder. We still have a lot more to process yet. To make tea out of it, it’s best to add the powdered Chaga it to a loose leaf tea bag and let it steep in hot water. I can’t wait for a few good mug ups of this wild tea while I’m in the bush this winter. #chaga #wildharvest #wildedibles @coldsteelhunt

Jim Baird Instagram - Back from a week of hunting out of my canvas tent. We hunted hard every day and we’re happy to have had some success. I’m feeling thankful for the land around where I live and what it provides - food for my family and a strong sense of connection. I’m particularly feeling thankful for my family and wife @torigoesoutside who took on the real challenge of managing the kids while I was away. These trips require a ton of prep time and logistics which can seem daunting with all that’s going on in our day to day lives and this one was no exception. He was raised on the land, and has a lifetime of knowledge of the history, the traditions, and the people of this land. Chris Beeman, Ph. D., is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Brandon University in Manitoba. He earned his Doctorate of Education from Queen's University at Kingston and teaches in the area of indigenous epistemologies and ontologies. Alex and Chris have worked together to record this invaluable collection of stories as told by Alex Mathias about his early life growing up on Obabika Lake, within his family territory in the Temagami region. We made sure not to cut it all off, leaving some on the tree so that it will regrow. Chaga is a medicinal mushroom that makes a good tea, particularly when a little honey or maple syrup is added. We finally got around to processing it yesterday by cutting it into small chunks with my Commercial Series Butcher Knife by @coldsteelknives and then blasting it up into powder with a coffee grinder. We still have a lot more to process yet. To make tea out of it, it’s best to add the powdered Chaga it to a loose leaf tea bag and let it steep in hot water. I can’t wait for a few good mug ups of this wild tea while I’m in the bush this winter. #chaga #wildharvest #wildedibles @coldsteelhunt

We finally got around to processing it yesterday by cutting it into small chunks with my Commercial Series Butcher Knife by @coldsteelknives and then blasting it up into powder with a coffee grinder. We still have a lot more to process yet. To make tea out of it, it’s best to add the powdered Chaga it to a loose leaf tea bag and let it steep in hot water. We camp in a couple nice places where we need to put our tarp to good use because of the rain. Breaking camp in the morning takes a lot more time with kids as they need to be fed and dressed, (you can see me putting on Wesley’s wet suit on in one of the pics here). Both adults can’t really work at camp tasks at the same time because one of us needs to keep a watchful eye on our son Hudson who likes to go for hikes (with or without us!). Things get more challenging when we’re traveling down river and the rain really picks up…it just won’t let up for hours and hours on end and we’re soaked. Come evening, we begin searching for a cabin that should be close by. Our river notes are 30 years old so we don’t really know if it’s even there anymore. Soaked to the bone, at this point we’d be very grateful for a place to get warm and dry out tons of wet cloths. He was raised on the land, and has a lifetime of knowledge of the history, the traditions, and the people of this land. Chris Beeman, Ph. D., is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Brandon University in Manitoba. He earned his Doctorate of Education from Queen's University at Kingston and teaches in the area of indigenous epistemologies and ontologies. Alex and Chris have worked together to record this invaluable collection of stories as told by Alex Mathias about his early life growing up on Obabika Lake, within his family territory in the Temagami region.
