John Gallagher Jr. Instagram - Just unearthed this picture on an old iPad while doing some winter cleaning. Mortimer, Waterston and Gallagher. Sounds like a law firm. May of 2013. We were shooting a promo spot for The Newsroom in Lancaster, CA over a weekend while filming the second season during the week. We had to get up super early in order to shoot right at sunrise in the desert. I recall a general sense of collective punch drunk magic hour madness amongst the cast. It was fun. Can’t recall who snapped this shot. Might’ve been Alison Pill. Or maybe it was Dev Patel. Whoever it was, I’m sure glad they did. #Tbt

I moved to New York City 20 years ago to do an Off-Broadway play called Kimberly Akimbo. It’s a hit Broadway musical now. Perhaps you’ve heard of it! I was 18. I lived on 70th street on the UWS. I was a regular at Francesco’s Pizza, Il Violino and a card carrying VHS renter at Tower Records. RIP. All I wanted to do was be an actor and play songs that I wrote. Naturally, there have been ups and downs and somber open mics and hellish auditions and awful heartaches along the way and I have shot myself in the foot time and time again but somehow here I am all these years later failing upwards and getting to do the stuff that keeps me alive with friends and family by my side to see it all through with me. If you’d told that 18 year old kid that I would be gifted with opportunities such as the one that fell into my lap this week, well I dunno what he would’ve done. Probably have some Nutella and Lorna Doone shortbread cookies to celebrate. That was my jam in those days. 20 years. 5 nights. 47 songs. The most stupendously gifted friends. Countless blessings. John Gallagher Jr. Instagram - I’m taking a cue from the GOAT @msmelanielynskey here. As you can see from this questionable old headshot (why the sleeveless tee?!) I’ve been working as an actor for a while now. I’m not exactly sure when I got my @sagaftra card but I was still a teenager so it must’ve been around the time this picture was taken. I’ve been extremely fortunate to work fairly steadily throughout my 23 years in this volatile and ever evolving industry. Work has been waining for me in the last few years though as it has been for many performers. A combination of factors including the pandemic, slowing momentum, plain old aging, changing trends, a pickiness about what roles I accept that I’ve been privileged enough to try and maintain and now this necessary but disruptive reckoning with the forces and factors of corporate greed that have slowly been eroding protections for the workers over the last decade. With so much at stake, not just for me but the entire profession, I feel the vital need to stand strong and proud in solidarity during this strike with my fellow actors/writers/creators and human beings who only wish to be paid fairly for their work and not be replaced by AI. It’s not an unreasonable ask. As the late, great Richard Manuel once sung, “I’m a union man now, all the way.” ✊🏻

So I waited. And now here we are. Thus I do not take it at all for granted how lucky we are to be opening the east coast bow of Swept Away tonight at @arenastage in D.C. Exactly 2 years to the day that I got on a plane to head to Berkeley to start rehearsals for our last go around. This thing came and found me at a time when I didn’t realize how desperately I needed it. Thank you to every single person who has made it possible for us to keep sharing this piece with audiences. Happy opening shipmates. I love you all. ⚓️

John Gallagher Jr. Instagram - Guitar player in my band got Covid so I decided to do the set solo acoustic but then I slammed my finger trying to close a window before the gig and couldn’t even fret a chord without pain so I made the call to try and do a spoken word set. Insane. But the show must go on. So I read the lyrics of several of my newest songs and also decided to do the Indianapolis Speech from Jaws at the last minute. Thought I might be on stage for 5 minutes if I was lucky before they pulled the plug. Lasted 40. Only because people showed up and listened. One of my favorite New York City nights I’ve had in 20 years of living here. Thanks.

I’ve been working as an actor for a while now. I’m not exactly sure when I got my @sagaftra card but I was still a teenager so it must’ve been around the time this picture was taken. I’ve been extremely fortunate to work fairly steadily throughout my 23 years in this volatile and ever evolving industry. Work has been waining for me in the last few years though as it has been for many performers. With so much at stake, not just for me but the entire profession, I feel the vital need to stand strong and proud in solidarity during this strike with my fellow actors/writers/creators and human beings who only wish to be paid fairly for their work and not be replaced by AI. I’m not exactly sure when I got my @sagaftra card but I was still a teenager so it must’ve been around the time this picture was taken.
