Otis Moss Sr., a poor sharecropper, worked all his life to care for his family, suffering indignities and humiliations that generations before him had long endured. For the first time, in his 50s, he went to cast his vote. On Election Day, he got up before dawn, got dressed in his best suit, and went to his polling location—and was turned away in three locations. After walking all day, covering more than 18 miles, he returned home, exhausted and depleted, never experiencing the joy of voting. He died before the next election. Every time I cast a ballot, I choose not only for myself but also for Otis Moss Sr. and for the countless others who wanted to, but couldn't. It was September 16 when Mahsa Amini died while in police custody after she was arrested for allegedly wearing her headscarf too loosely. She was only 22-years-old. Ever since, protesters in Iran and across the world have been calling for justice for her death. These women and their supporters are taking to the streets, taking to social media, cutting their hair in an act of resistance, burning their head scarfs, and making sure we don’t forget Mahsa’s name. They’ve gotten arrested, brutalized, and even killed. They’re not only sacrificing their jobs, but their lives all to stand up for their rights and their freedom. Their fortitude is so inspiring to me and the movement they sparked is a shining example of what people can achieve when they band together in order to create change. I applaud these women. Oprah Winfrey Instagram - Vernon Winfrey 1933-2022 Less than a week ago we honored my father in his own backyard. My friend and gospel singer Wintley Phipps saluted him with song. He FELT the love and reveled in it until he could no longer speak. Yesterday with family surrounding his bedside, I had the sacred honor of witnessing the man responsible for my life, take his last breath. We could feel Peace enter the room at his passing. I grew up reading her insightful books and memorizing her poems. When I finally got to meet her in my late 20s she made me a meal and read me Paul Laurence Dunbar poetry. From that point on, I sat at her table and listened to her words of wisdom for years. “When people tell you who they are, believe them— the FIRST time!” “When you know better, you do better.” “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.” And a mind treasure of other wisdoms.  I value those gifts to me even more now that she’s gone. But more importantly, I still feel her everywhere.
