Caption : kobe bryant. “To meet Kobe was to meet a cultural institution. His surrounding entourage was an entire factory on the move yet somehow he was at peace – in full control of life’s machine. His physical stature was humbling – his silvery skin, in perfect condition. Kobe Bryant was living life 200% that day. He sat for me for a few precious moments – time stood still – the racing swirl halted. ‘Where does your extraordinary self belief come from?’ I asked. He replied, ‘When I was a boy I used to say to myself SOMEBODY HAS TO WIN, IT MIGHT AS WELL BE ME.’ Kobe, you inspired a generation to believe in human resilience. Rest in peace.”Likes : 38947

Caption : robert de niro. “Robert De Niro’s father was a great artist, he had a wonderful painting studio in a SoHo loft space in Manhattan. Although the actors father passed away many years ago, De Niro kept the studio exactly as it was the day his father died. The last unfinished painting still on the canvas, the paintbrushes ready for action, open sketchbooks; It was a place of meditation. A place of truth. There is nothing so pure as an artists workplace, it reminded me of my own fathers office and art studio. I had the great privelidge to be invited by this legendary actor to do a portrait of him at this very location. The man arrived and I realized something special indeed – the fathers studio allowed us to be human. My white background covered up the environment but it all showed in De Niro’s face. This was not the celebrated actor, this was the man. Robert De Niro, I salute you.”Likes : 31453

We will be talking about the coronavirus, resilience, compassion and our strong capacity to overcome adversity. If any of you are feeling lost and looking for answers I hope this intimate discussion will help you remember you are not alone. Join us today at 2pm EST. Please register via the link in my profile. In these hard times we must be human, authentic, compassionate and brave. Let’s stick together and stay close in spite of our physical barriers. I’m proud today to share with you a brand new picture and a new iconic subject for my archive. I photographed Colin Kaepernick at my New York studio. The session was honest, humble and intimate, which allowed us both to capture this visual symbol of empowerment and strength. Colin Kaepernick, you trusted me and I salute you.”Likes : 28863

Caption : harry styles. I took this picture during a whirlwind photo session with the entire One Direction clan. I remember having one hour to photograph a group shot, as well as individual sittings with each band member. This restrictive timing only added to the intensity of the moment. I must admit, I knew very little about the group, but I am always happy to learn, and at the time of the photo session I was told they were the biggest act in the world. Harry clearly stood out for me. In this picture he has a magical quality, and it was so easy to capture him. He was charming and inquisitive, and I was surprised at how unguarded he was. I post this picture as a tribute to Harry who has now emerged as a major artist in his own right. I was proud to include Harry’s iris in my latest NFT drop, and I am pleased to announce @talb3311 is the winner of our competition – GUESS WHO? Congratulations on winning my signed copy of PLATON’S REPUBLIC. Thank you all for playing the game. Harry Styles, EYE salute you.Likes : 28800

Caption : Dear friends, it’s been a long time since I have posted and I apologize for my absence. I have been completely consumed with some really, really exciting new initiatives and plans. I am hoping to shake up the world as we come out of lockdown. In the meantime, I wanted to tell you a story that may resonate with you. I spent a day with George Clooney in his Hollywood garden some time ago. We had worked together 25 years earlier as we were both beginning our careers and it was so nice to reconnect. We are much older now and hopefully wiser. I asked him to describe our time. He said that we are living through an extraordinary period in history, that we have more information at our fingertips and more connectivity than ever before yet somehow, we seem to know less. He continued…if we want to get the news today, we probably go to a source online that confirms what we already believe, and so we are in danger of being trapped in our own echo chamber – and that magical thing called a shared experience, where we respectfully debate our differences, is rapidly disappearing. Yet as I write this post today, I am reminded of our beautiful and unique community. I know for sure you are all different types of people who believe in different things, yet you continue to engage with my stories, and I am always inspired by your uplifting and thoughtful comments. Your support reinforces my optimism for a brighter, fairer and more inclusive future. We show up and we are present. At the end of my day with George I asked, “What do you hope for as we face these challenges?” He said, “I hope for reason because reason always wins out.” George Clooney, I salute you.Likes : 27349

Caption : Dear friends, here is something for the holidays. I took this picture of Adele in a private and secret location in London, away from the madness that often comes with celebrity. She had recently had a beautiful little baby boy and I was so thrilled that while we were working, her baby with was us keeping us company. As I prepared to take this particular frame, focusing on Adele’s eyelash, her son was crawling around her feet. Suddenly, he started to squeeze her ankles with his tiny fingers. As she felt the pressure on her foot, her spirit instantly transformed. This is not the face of one of the world’s greatest superstars, this is the soul of a loving young mother. Adele, thank you for sharing that day with me and thank you for your trust. We had a human moment together and it is now embedded in this picture forever more. To Adele and all the working mothers of the world, I salute you.Likes : 24480

Caption : “I write to you today at a pivotal moment in global history. The fourth industrial revolution – that surging data beast has entered a new phase. THIS IS THE END OF THE BEGINNING. We face grave challenges, and despite seductive promises of technological empowerment and connectivity from our tech titans, we remain a fractured and dark society. Our identity is defined by tribalism. Our beliefs are informed by echo chambers. Social media corporations have benefited from our new filter bubble existence (rewarding us with programmed endorphin rushes, thus keeping us glued to their platforms). Furthermore, the new media giants have also played a devastating role in the disruption of our long trusted institutions. Our capacity to reflect on current events with tempered context and objectivity is now hindered. News channels today often embrace a misguided greed for augmented metrics and viewing figures, rather than fair and balanced information. FRIENDS, it is time to embrace a new bright dawn. It is time to lead public opinion rather than follow it. Our reliance on focus groups shall be replaced by our steadfast faith in truth and justice. If we are to enjoy the fruits of individual empowerment, then we must also exercise responsible global citizenship and moral compass. Suspicion and slander are infections, but so is compassion and empathy. So I say come on then, let us go forward together in our united strength, let us all belong to a nobel cause again. We are all equal stake holders. We are all future champions of the human condition. To be a leader is to embrace servitude. So let’s be useful, let’s do our duty, and let’s acknowledge that our differences are the making of our majestic greatness. A new highlight of hope has caught the chrome of my camera, and I am ready to bridge build. Join me.”Likes : 24135

Caption : daniel craig. Friends, I could not resist this one. Here is my tribute to Daniel Craig. When I took this picture, he had recently finished 007 filming, and came to the photo session with his arm in a sling. I presume his injury was from performing his own stunts. The on-set publicist insisted that we only take headshots, but Daniel has such a physical presence. He kindly removed the sling and rested his damaged arm on his leg, wincing at the movement and pain. I took this photograph capturing a moment where he looks invincible, yet is secretly battle torn. Daniel was very kind that day to see beyond the restrictions of public relations and recognize the importance of artistic decisions. Daniel Craig, I salute you.Likes : 23748

Caption : bobby weir. “Bobby Weir walked into my New York studio with an entourage – a crew who were clearly protective yet, everybody knew something special was about to happen. The atmosphere was respectful and charged. The man looked like a wizard – a thick, hand-knitted cloak draped over his shoulders, a worn leather cowboy hat topped waves of pure white hair, his snow beard was biblical, his eyes were on fire. This is a mystical man. The dialogue started immediately with a warm handshake, ‘I’m Bobby Weir, I play music and I tell stories.’ He continued, ‘it’s all about story telling – any artist is first and foremost a storyteller – it’s an urge that we artists have – it’s my escape – I get to step aside, I get to be somebody else and that somebody else is – ALL OF US. IT’S A SHARED EXPERIENCE.’ I asked Bobby about current divisions in our society and after a long, searching pause he spoke, ‘when people fall into the music all their tribal considerations fall away and their rooted humanity is what everyone shares. For instance, when Hank Williams sings about loneliness it’s totally universal.’ Bobby then quotes with the respect of history – ‘THE SILENCE OF A FALLING STAR LIGHTS UP A PURPLE SKY, AND AS I WONDER WHERE YOU ARE, I’M SO LONELY I COULD CRY. He’s sharing some pain there but it’s something we can all feel.’ Another long pause – I’m waiting with anticipation for his thought process to resolve… then he continues, ‘that’s something worth doing – to empathize with people.’ I asked Bobby about the meaning of people power, he said ‘I know we are all one. I’ve seen it – I’ve felt it. It’s hard to get that across to some folks – that I am you and you are me, but it’s the truth, I know that. I guess it’s difficult for a lot of people to accept the fact that you really are insignificant – and the more we come to that realization, the more we can accept the fact that we all share a common humanity.’ Bobby Weir, you are a wonderful and mystical human being, I salute you.” @gqLikes : 23300

Caption : (1/2) george h. w. bush. ”Today is a day to remember George H. W. Bush. I have fond, personal memories to share with you. I photographed the former president in his Houston office during his son’s term in the White House. Bush Sr. had tremendous charm and wit – his unrelenting political battles of the past had not disfigured the spirit of the man in the present. I asked him about Margaret Thatcher – he said she was a tough lady but a loyal, steady friend. They were together at a summit the very moment news broke about Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait, ‘she was a rock that day,’ he said. President Bush was also a huge admirer of Churchill. This picture is our private tribute to Winston – ‘V’ for victory at the end of the second world war. Here is the Bush Sr. character on view – playful, disarmingly cheeky, with a deep rooted love and respect, for public service, courage, and history. This picture was to become the cover of a great magazine called Texas Monthly. My dearest friend and greatest collaborator, Scott Dadich, was then, creative director. As soon as the cover was released publicly however, it occurred to me that the George W. Bush White House administration may read the image differently. I immediately received an email from one of W’s chief political advisors – I would love to share the note with you today. ‘Dear Mr. Platon, congratulations on a cover with cross-generational appeal. George H. W. Bush’s two upraised fingers may represent a victory sign, or a peace sign, depending on which side of World War II the reader was born. However, my three year old daughter had a different take. Upon glimpsing the cover from her seat at the front of the grocery cart, she exclaimed, happily, “daddy, that man sings LITTLE BUNNY FOO FOO!”’”Likes : 21847

Caption : stephen hawking. “Professor Hawking’s physical condition during the session must have been extremely challenging for him. As far as I could tell, one of the last functioning muscles in his body was around his right eye. In this picture you can see a sensor has been fitted to his glasses to monitor movement. Thus, he can direct a cursor over each letter in the alphabet on a computer until he makes a selection: LETTERS – WORDS – SENTENCES – PARAGRAPHS. The world’s greatest free mind is imprisoned in the most fragile and limited body. By the end of my sitting he was clearly exhausted. Just keeping his eyes open was a mountain to climb. Knowing he had given his all, I asked if he could slip me a single word of wisdom – one word about life from Professor Stephen Hawking was bound to be prophetic. His nurse explained that when he is tired his powers of communication are less accurate. She suggested that we let him be. As I packed up to leave I heard beeps coming from the professor’s tablet monitor. We all turned to see him moving the cursor over each letter. ‘HE’S TYPING!’ With each beep we all leaned in with anticipation – He stopped at the letter ‘W.’ “I doubt that is accurate,” said his carer. Then the search for the second letter began – BEEP BEEP BEEP until the letter ‘O.’ Once again his nurse seemed doubtful. “W – O, it doesn’t mean anything.” Then his beeps began for a third and final time. BEEP BEEP BEEP – all the way back to the letter ‘W’ again. Before the nurse could interpret, it hit me, “Oh my God,” I shouted. “He typed the word WOW!” My heart raced as I squeezed his hand, “Thank you professor,” I whispered. Despite this man’s overwhelming adversity, he still believes in the mighty power of WOW. How lucky I am to receive such an important philosophical lesson in optimism. In the face of life’s challenges, a courageous human being looks at the world with wonder. Professor Hawking, I salute you and the power of WOW.Likes : 20132
![Platon - 20K Likes - colin powell. In the tense last few days of a contentious election campaign between Barack Obama and John McCain, General Colin Powell made a historic appearance on a news program called Meet The Press. He announced that even though he was a Republican, he had decided to endorse Obama [a Democrat] for President. He said that he believed Obama would represent a more inclusive society at a time when America was deeply divided. He said he felt this way because of a photograph he had seen in a magazine. He described the picture in great detail — a grieving mother at her son’s grave in Arlington Cemetery. Her son had died fighting for America in Iraq. The mother’s name was Elsheba Khan, and she was an American-Muslim, as was her fallen son. General Colin Powell described her son as a true patriot who had made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. The magazine he referred to was The New Yorker, and I am humbled to say the portrait was mine. The mother’s grief had touched the heart of America’s first black Secretary of State, and helped inspire him to rise above political division for the sake of inclusive unity. Over the years, Colin Powell and I became friends, and I enjoyed many inspiring and uplifting conversations with him about race, religious freedom and service. He described America as a constant work in progress, and that we are all stakeholders in our communal future. He was gracious enough to appear in a Netflix documentary about my work, produced by my dear friend Scott Dadich. During our filmed photo session, the General shared his bold optimistic vision for America’s society. Colin Powell once wrote me a letter which I treasure to this day. He noted that my portrait of Elsheba Khan had shown him, in a painful way, what America is really about. General Colin Powell, you were one of our greatest statesmen and you will surely be missed. Caption : prince. “To spend the day with Prince is a rare and special thing. He was performing in Nashville, Tennessee and I was to photograph him backstage moments before he would thrill 20,000 people. He was introspective but surprisingly generous. He invited me to his sound check – I was mesmerized as he played every single instrument, making constant adjustments with the sound technicians. Even the drum kit was put through a rigorous examination. Every cymbal, every tom tom, the bass drum, and finally the snare. It was an exhaustive process of perfection and complete control – time stood still. I built my studio behind the stage and he waited until the arena was filled with screaming crowds before he finally appeared for me. I was overwhelmed, and he was calm – stately and tremendously trippy. I thanked him for providing a soundtrack to my youth. In particular, there was a song called Pop Life – an amazing song. I played it every Saturday night as I dressed for a party – a ritual that helped me feel 200% alive. He listened to my scattered reminiscence and smiled that Prince smile – then he chuckled to himself. ‘What’s so funny?’ I asked. He whispered, ‘I used to get dressed to that song too.’ Prince, you were majestic, and if you’re listening, I salute you.”Likes : 19485

Caption : stephen hawking. “I photographed Professor Hawking in his personal office buried deep inside the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Cambridge University, England. The room was dominated by an oversized blackboard filled with chalked algebra equations. Pictures of Marylyn Monroe were scattered on all remaining walls. The professor was brought in by a team of medical nurses and a technical adviser. I was asked to leave the room so they could have some privacy to prepare him for my sitting – and prepared he was! HE HAS A POWERFUL PRESENCE. SILENT. MOTIONLESS. YET, 200% ALIVE. THIS MAN RADIATES CHARISMA – HIS EYES BURN WITH FIRE. He rocked a dapper tweed jacket with a silk cravat, which elegantly covered up all the plastic tubes entering his fragile body. He was engulfed by a mechanical throne-like wheel chair, in my opinion it only added to this man’s stature. At one point his eyes became sensitive to my lighting and during a quick break his nurse fitted his sunglasses. Suddenly, it all happened – rock star swagger. Here is professor Stephen Hawking as Platon sees him, a badass super hero. Professor Hawking, I salute you.”Likes : 19476

Caption : reverend ct vivian. “Today it is with great sadness that I post a tribute to one of my all time heroes and mentors. The Reverend CT Vivian passed away early this morning, he was 95 years old. He was one of Martin Luther King’s closest advisors and a most loyal champion for the Civil Rights Movement. Dedicated to non-violent protests, CT Vivian spoke truth to power and courageously confronted his racist foes with dignity and resilience. I photographed him in Atlanta, Georgia at the Ebenezer Baptist Church where Martin Luther King used to preach to his congregation. After the shoot, CT took the day off and spent hours giving me private counsel – the principles of non-violent direct action – the importanace of compassion – how to fight for justice and drive positive change. I asked, ‘What do you say to my generation?’ He replied, ‘When you get knocked down stand back up, stand up to the powers that be, but do it peacefully with grace in your heart, without violence.’ I picked up my camera and focused the lens – he closed his eyes and raised his hand. ‘Reverend, what are you thinking at this moment?’ I asked. He replied, ‘I’m reaching for the stars my brother, reaching for the stars.’ Reverend CT Vivian, I salute you.”Likes : 18686

Caption : kirk douglas. “Kirk Douglas was my first portrait subject in America. I was working with John Kennedy Jr. and his magazine ‘George.’ I arrived at his mid-century modern home to set up. It was a mini Metropolitan Museum of Art. Picasso’s – Matisse’s – Irving Penn portraits, this was a temple of good taste. Kirk Douglas had recently had a stroke and his mouth was a little slanted, his speech – blurred, yet the fire burned brightly in his eyes. As he sat down in front of my lens, I felt I was facing history. ‘I can’t believe I’m about to photograph the man who played Spartacus’ I said. He leaned forward and replied, ‘I didn’t play Spartacus – I AM SPARTACUS!’ Kirk Douglas, rest in peace.”Likes : 18189

Caption : martin scorsese. “I first came to New York to work with John Kennedy Jr. He founded a political magazine called ‘George’ and I was recruited as one of his main photographers. He sent me on a rock and roll tour through America, giving me the most extraordinary access to the most fascinating people, the movers and the shakers of our time. We had a deal, he would continue to give me unprecedented access to people that I would not normally have access to, and in return I had to be human and not be dazzled by their status and power. He wanted me to show what it’s really like to meet these people. The moment I would step back from the edge, the deal would be over. One of my first portraits for John was of Martin Scorsese. Scorsese was a hero of mine and his films have directly shaped my narrative. I photographed this legendary director in his private cinema/screening room. You can’t tell that despite his short height, he was a towering inferno of talent. As I set up my studio in his screening room, I could see all of his actor’s gestures embedded in his personality. A little bit of Harvey Keitel, a little piece of Robert De Niro. I remember the room being freezing, and I asked him, ‘why is the AC cranked to such an insane level?’ He replied, ‘I need the cold to keep me edgy while I watch my movies. I never want to feel comfortable or sleepy.’ Mr. Scorsese, I salute you.”Likes : 17249

I saw the little girl marching with her mother at an immigration reform rally in Arizona, I knew instantly that the message on her t-shirt along with her beautiful spirit would be a powerful statement. I asked her mother if I could take a picture of her daughter, she agreed but then the little girl refused – she was too shy – she did what my children would do with a stranger and hid behind her mothers legs. This was not the picture I wanted to take – a victimized child running from authority. So I had to earn her trust by playing balloons with her for 5 and a half hours. I never had to earn trust like that with any of the powerful politicians or hollywood celebrities I’ve had the privilege to work with. Eventually Evelyn pointed to me and said “PICTURE NOW.” I had passed her audition. I took this picture with a steadfast conviction that this had to be one of the most important photos of my career. She stands not as a victim but as an empowered little girl filled with hope. I congratulated her mother for having such a well behaved little girl, and her mother told her daughter “the photographer man is very happy!” Evelyn replies, “IF I DID SO GOOD, DOES THAT MEAN DADDY CAN COME HOME NOW?” Perhaps our politicians can explain to Evelyn why her family must be separated. I certainly cannot.” To meet more of the heroes of our time head over to The People’s Portfolio – @peoplesportfolioLikes : 17089

I was collaborating with John Kennedy Jr. on a large scale photo essay, honoring all the senators and congressmen who had served their country fighting in the Vietnam War. McCain stood out – he was mischievous and fun that day on Capitol Hill. It showed in my picture – a fearless man of conviction who always spoke his mind, ironically covering his mouth. Years later, we met again under different circumstances – now he was running for president and my role was to reflect the heavy responsibility he was carrying. He told me he hated that first portrait – that it was “too artistic” and not “Washington D.C. material.” He said, “make me look like a president this time and I’ll forgive you.” I replied that I could not portray him as anything other than himself. Suddenly, he got it – that moment of empowerment – a chance to project his own authenticity. John McCain rose to the photographic occasion – a dignified man facing a divided nation. With great humility, he believed in service and it showed in my pictures – he was not a physically graceful man – he had sustained permanent injuries from being tortured in Vietnam and this affected his posture and flexibility. But what I captured was his courage, his dignity, and his respect for his country. This was a man whose service was a true measure of his patriotism – a political maverick driven by his moral compass and not by mob rule. The last time we met he pulled me aside and whispered in my ear “you are forgiven.” Ultimately however, my pictures were not of a president to be but of one of the most honorable senators ever to serve on Capitol Hill, unwilling to bend to the split screen – party politics that defines our current turbulent history. Senator John McCain, Requiescat in Pace, I salute you.”Likes : 16939

Caption : quincy jones. “I have been thinking a lot lately about Quincy Jones. I spent the day with him at his LA home back in the late 90’s. John Kennedy Jr. asked me to photograph the most generous philanthropists in Hollywood, and Quincy was on the list. His home was a temple of cultural history – evidence that this legendary game changer had consistently defied musical and racial categorization. The list of his collaborators is extraordinary – Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Herbie Hancock, Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson. Just think – it was a Quincy Jones recording with Sinatra and Basie that became the first piece of music ever to be played on the moon. Just think – it was a Quincy Jones recording with Michael Jackson that became the best selling album of all time. All my heroes broke social barriers but did so with artistic merit, love, and optimism. I call it, GREATNESS OF HEART. But honestly, it takes faith and unremitting zeal to step out and fight for racial fairness and dignity. So I asked for some advice: “What did you say to the old guard, the outdated power brokers who were unwilling to give your talent a chance?” Quincy’s glowing smile morphed into the face of determination. He replied, “Not one drop of my self worth depends on your acceptance of me.” I had tapped into this man’s FORCE FACTOR. This close up picture was taken one second later. Eventually, it was time to hug this legend goodbye – I couldn’t help feeling emotional. Quincy put his hand on my shoulder and said, “man, you must be a musician.” It doesn’t get better than that. Quincy Jones, I salute you.”Likes : 16730

In the past, some of you have raised important issues about NFTs, specifically about their effects on the environment. I chose to collaborate with the LGND team because they utilize a new eco-conscious blockchain technology which is 125,000 times more efficient than other methods. Check out this behind-the-scenes film. It’s really fun. Let’s play the game together. Stay tuned. To all my followers, “EYE” salute you.Likes : 16374

Caption : little rock nine. “I photographed the Little Rock Nine in front of their gothic high school where they once shaped American’s conscience. The lady in the middle of the group wearing a dark shawl is Elizabeth Eckford. Many years ago she was attacked by an angry mob of white mothers as she clutched her school books on the way to class. Honestly, it’s one of the most shameful sides of America an immigrant like myself could ever see. Now, decades later she stood with her friends in front of my camera. For a brief moment I lost my concentration and allowed myself to focus on the photograph and not the people. ‘Excuse me my dear, would you mind lowering your chin a little?’ I asked. She replied, ‘Young man, don’t you ever ask me to lower my chin – I hold my head up high with pride because of what we did.’ At that moment they all raised their chins to her level and then they held hands and I took the picture. Elizabeth, we are in awe of your courage and compassion. We salute you and your extraordinary friends.”Likes : 16311

Caption : gary oldman. “I took this picture of Gary Oldman many years ago at Sundance Film Festival. He had just written and directed ‘Nil by Mouth’. It’s a dark, brutal depiction of working class London starring Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke. I love this portrait of Oldman, somehow, for a moment I tapped into his playful mischief. We all have a light and dark side to our soul, but great artists normally are pushed to both extremes. I’ve been studying Winston Churchill speeches a lot lately-his phrasing, his defiance, his capacity to stir a nations courage. Churchill alone was determined to uphold the principles of truth and justice against the dark forces of Nazi Germany, while the political establishment in Great Britain was ready to appease Hitler. With an extraordinary communicative skill, Winston perfectly articulated why we must fight on for freedom and dignity, and why we must win at all costs. This battle for a hopeful humanity remains just as relevant today. By the time I saw ‘Darkest Hour’-Churchill’s voice and mannerisms were embedded under my skin. I was fascinated to see how Gary Oldman would channel this historic powerhouse of a man. ‘Darkest Hour’ for me, was victorious. A perfect balance of stubborn grumpiness and witty disobedience. It seems after all these years, the infectious mischief is still burning brightly in Gary Oldman’s eyes. Gary Oldman I salute you.”Likes : 15688

Caption : Sinéad O’Connor visited my New York studio with her son. The day she arrived a neighbor was doing some renovations to their bathroom and there was a pile of discarded building materials outside my studio door. “Sorry for the mess,” I said. “Never apologize for reality,” she replied. I was so excited to work with her. She seemed a little fragile but was upbeat and candid. As she walked into my space she glanced at my large Prince portrait hanging on the wall. “Oh dear,” she whispered, “I didn’t like him.” She then told me about a bizarre evening she had spent with Prince at his house. During our shoot there was no posing—just words, stories, gestures, and ideas. She constantly smoked a cigarette which naturally ended up in my picture. We talked about our favorite scenes in movies. “What do you think of Hitchcock?” I asked. “Psycho—shower scene—the best,” she replied. Sinéad went on to describe the vulnerability of Janet Leigh’s naked character and the foggy menace of her killer—seen through the shower curtain. “It still haunts me,” she said with growing emotion, “it’s terrifying.” As our session drew to a close and we all said our goodbyes on my doorstep, I noticed a mottled sheet of bathroom glass on the pile of building materials waiting to be collected by a contractor. I had an idea—“Wait!” I said, “I need you for two more minutes.” My assistants carried the sheet of glass into my hallway and held it up against the wall—I asked Sinéad to stand behind while I loaded my Leica with a roll of film. Sinéad obliged but seemed confused. “What are we doing?” she said. “It’s the shower curtain,” I said, “from Psycho.” “Ah, I love it!” she replied, “but I wonder, am I the hunter or the hunted?” Sinéad you were majestic, honest and brave. Caption : A note to my followers. Here we are together — in a technological trance. Here we are together — divided by tribalism. Here we are together — distracted by mass myths. We are separated by borders, walls, windows and computer screens, yet still we quarrel and argue. We are either sore losers or gloating winners. We should be coming together to solve common goals. We should be united by heart. We should put aside our grievances and dare to listen to each other. This is a picture of Gasser Abdel Razek with his young son. This brave, kind man is a human rights advocate in Egypt. As I took this picture in Cairo during the height of the Egyptian Revolution years ago, he said to me: “The first thing I took to Tahrir square was my satellite phone — the second thing I took was my 18-month old son. Even though he didn’t understand what was going on, I hoped it would shape his future. I really wanted him to be there.” On November 19th, 2020 Egyptian security forces arrested Gasser Abdel Razek at his home in Cairo and took him to an unknown location for interrogation under bogus charges of terrorism. This threat and harassment of a compassionate human rights leader is unjust and immoral. Friends, though we ourselves face daunting challenges of historic proportions, let us recognize our people power and rekindle the spirit of optimism. I am joining forces with Human Rights Watch to fight for Gasser’s release. Please repost this picture and share this story with your neighbors. Caption : Dear friends, this is your 3-day countdown! I will never forget the day I photographed Naomi Wadler, the inspiring student activist. We had the most amazing conversation about leadership and responsibility. I asked her about the current social gridlock and paralysis we are all experiencing. She said something extraordinary, “Talk with people, don’t talk at them. Listen to them, don’t just hear them.” I then asked her advice, “Naomi, how can I, a white middle-aged man be of service to your cause?” She paused, looked into my eyes and said, “Stand with us, not in front of us.” This young, fearless leader gave me the best instructions for navigating a future path. Join us this Friday, December 18th at 5:30pm EST to honor and celebrate Naomi Wadler. Please see link in my bio to RSVP. Naomi Wadler, I salute you.Likes : 15166

As a gentleman gets older and his body loses shape, we turn to tailoring to help us along.’ He reminisced about the first time he arrived in New York City – the excitement he felt – the freedom to dare – the infectious street drive. He was still enamored with the idea of this DREAM AND DO town. ‘Tell me a secret about creativity, any unconquered dreams left?’ I asked. ‘Well, I always secretly wanted to be a jazz singer – I guess I ran out of time.’ I said, ‘there’s still time, TODAY – NOW – sing for me.’ I took this frame as Tom Wolfe was rekindling his musical memory bank. There was a pause – he began to smile. He whispered, ‘you gotta love Cole Porter.’ Then he sang for me. ‘BIRDS DO IT, BEES DO IT, EVEN EDUCATED FLEAS DO IT, LET’S DO IT, LET’S FALL IN LOVE.’ Tom Wolfe – you were majestic that day. Our main goal is to raise money and awareness for my human rights foundation, The People’s Portfolio, so we can continue to amplify the voices of inspirational leaders, just like Ramy. To all of you who have supported me for so long, I want you to know I care deeply about your thoughts and comments. Some of you voiced well-informed concerns about the environmental impact of NFTs. I want to reassure you that a portion of the proceeds from my NFT sales will pay to neutralize our carbon footprint for this drop. Caption : robert mugabe. “I photographed Robert Mugabe at the UN General Assembly. It was a chilling experience, to be so close to a leader with such a horrendous human rights record. He was very polite, perfectly dressed, yet had an icy cold quality in his eyes. As the session finished, he got up and walked away. Another head of state arrived to be photographed, seeing Mugabe’s frame leaving the room, he looked at the vacated seat – my white apple box, and said ‘Mr. Platon, I will sit for you, but not on that box, there is blood on it.’ Today Robert Mugabe died, age 95.Likes : 14457

Caption : My dear friends, we are stunned by this catastrophe – we are frightened, confused, lonely, with a devastating sense of futility. We have all argued with each other in the past but now those conflicts are over – for we are united by a common bond – survival. This horrific virus has waged war on us all and in the face of shared adversity we remember how beautiful and majestic our lives were until very recently. I can’t help but reflect on so many of my own wasted opportunities – to simply hold hands with those I love – to hug a friend or share dinner with new acquaintances. But while the vast majority of us retreat to the safety of our homes, we must think about those heroes who serve in the frontline of healthcare. They are the foot soldiers of this battle – in the trenches – selflessly dedicated to our cause – humanity itself. In time, we will reflect on this bleak page of history. What will we say? That we took things from Mother Nature that did not belong to us – and paid a heavy price for our crime, perhaps – but we will also say that we faced this new enemy with a deep sense of duty – of humility – of courage and compassion. As Winston Churchill said to the overwhelming power of Hitler’s Nazi war machine, “You do your worst and we will do our best.” Come then, bang the gong of strength – lets do our best – lets show the future what we are made of. We are divided by space but unified in our hearts. We are not alone. We must focus on the most vulnerable in society. Together we will beat this and earn the respect of history. I salute you all, especially our doctors and nurses.Likes : 13717

Caption : I remember watching A FIST FULL OF DOLLARS for the first time when I was a kid. My family had just arrived in London from Greece, where I grew up. Now, as an immigrant I felt isolated from the English culture and with a heavy Greek accent I struggled at school. Clint Eastwood’s outcast character represented hope for me—with Sergio Leone’s masterful direction and Ennio Morricone’s defiant soundtrack, I was given an imaginative alter universe. My parents bought me the soundtrack on vinyl and for days I would conjure up a dream world of adventures while playing Ennio’s music. To finally meet and photograph Clint Eastwood was an epic experience. He was in the middle of filming AMERICAN SNIPER so I visited him on set in LA. Clint was a total gentleman, kind, respectful, curious, and self-deprecating. I saw no evidence of the defiant and moody Dirty Harry character he had immortalized for some many years. As I focused my lens on his eyelash, a carpenter banged a nail into part of the set a few feet away, breaking our concentration. Clint’s charm momentarily slipped as he gave the set builder a hard stare—Dirty Harry was back, if only for 1/500th of a second—I caught it on film forevermore. Happy Birthday Clint Eastwood, I salute you.Likes : 13570

Caption : john lewis. “I first met Rep. John Lewis in his office in Washington DC. It was a cold, dark January morning and we were planning a photo session. His voice was gentle, his face kind, his demeanor good-hearted. He reflected on his childhood and how raising chickens taught him a great deal about personal responsibility. ‘I would preach to the chickens and they would listen.’ He then whispered, ‘You know I’m the last one left.’ ‘The last what?’ I asked. ‘The last living speaker from the March on Washington.’ In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his epic I HAVE A DREAM speech and John Lewis spoke proudly by his side. ‘I loved and admired that man, he was my hero’ he said. It now seemed obvious – I had to persuade the congressman to brave the cold and to be photographed in front of the Lincoln Memorial where he once shaped American history. I nervously made the ask. He paused, ‘I’ll be there tomorrow at 8am, I’ll give you ten minutes.’ The next day I arrived at the memorial while it was still dark. I realized that the mighty columns would dwarf this humble man, so using perspective as a tool I found a quiet spot of frosted grass further away below the steps and set up my light and camera. He arrived just after sun up – today he was different – tough, ready for action, determined and committed. ‘Let’s do it,’ he said. I captured the man as a towering national monument. After five minutes I was done. I thanked him and as I escorted him back to his warm car he whispered, ‘I gave you ten minutes – you only took five – now I have five minutes spare to make a difference. Let’s hope I’m successful.’ John Lewis, rest in peace, I salute you.”Likes : 13358

Manson was polite, mild-mannered and introverted – yet also a dynamic visual collaborator. We talked about hypocrisy and failed leadership while a tropical storm raged in paradise that day. I took him outside onto the balcony overlooking the windswept palm trees. Although I focused on the tormented background scene, you can still see all the scars on his chest from his violent stage act. Now, Marilyn Manson is 50 years old, and so am I. Here’s to being a true cultural provocateur. Marilyn Manson, I salute you.”Likes : 13341

Caption : A note to my followers. It is with great joy that I can tell you my friend Gasser Abdel Razek has now been freed from an unjust incarceration in Egypt. I was proud to collaborate with my foundation The People’s Portfolio and my partners at Human Rights Watch. Together we formed a global advocacy campaign for our heroic champion’s immediate release. Today’s victory means a wonderful, compassionate man is home and safe with his family. Here is a mural I made for the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, GA. It is an epic lineup of global human rights defenders from Myanmar, Russia and Egypt. They stand together for freedom. The inclusion of Gasser and his son brings hope and optimism to the cause. Today is a good day for truth and justice. Gasser Abdel Razek, I salute you. @peoplesportfolio @humanrightswatch @ctr4chrLikes : 13314

Caption : scott dadich. “To all my friends and leaders. Today I want to pay tribute to a very special human being. His name is Scott Dadich. I’ve had the privilege to work with some of the most talented people in the world during my career but honestly Scott stands at the top of that mountain. He is a visionary communicator who has the utmost respect for good taste and good design. Together we worked on some extraordinary photo shoots – President Bush Sr., Edward Snowden and Stephen Spielberg to name but a few. Scott has worn many hats throughout his career – creative director, magazine editor in chief, and now CEO, but it was Scott who was the executive producer and creative force behind Netflix’s Abstract series. It was a real honor to be a part of that great endeavor, celebrating the best design thinkers around the world. With the upcoming release of the second season, I could not be more proud of my friend and all his majestic achievements. I hope you all enjoy season two as much as you enjoyed season one. Scott Dadich, I salute you.”Likes : 12864

Caption : reverend joseph lowery, reverend c. t. vivian, andrew young, & reverend fred shuttlesworth. “Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The previous post was a picture of his chair. I can think of no better way to honor this great man’s existence than by sharing this story with you. This picture was taken outside Martin Luther King Jr.’s Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. I had the great privilege to invite his closest aids and compatriots to come together one more time underneath the famous neon sign. At the time this picture was taken, the brave and courageous Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth was extremely frail and ill, yet he insisted on traveling a great distance with his family to be part of this historic gathering. His family dressed him in a dapper suit and he arrived at the church in a wheelchair. His presence created a beautiful spirit of reunion -iIt felt as if we were all going back in time. I was deeply concerned, however, about composing and capturing this communion of compassion. Would the wheelchair become a barrier? How would I bring these great men physically together in an everlasting icon of empathy? The neon sign seemed like a great anchor for my composition. These legends gathered underneath the glowing light and instantly surrounded Reverend Shuttlesworth. These men played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights movement in America; their courage and determination was matched by their empathy and hope for a better life. It seemed only natural that as I took this picture they should all say a prayer for the continued battle for human dignity in America. How lucky I am to have caught this majestic moment on film. Since this picture was taken, Fred Shuttlesworth has sadly passed away, and this marks the last time they were all together in prayer. To the brave warriors of the Civil Rights movement, I salute you.”Likes : 12054

Caption : Dear friends, the year is drawing to a close and I want to thank you all for joining me on this platform. I’ve really enjoyed sharing my thoughts and pictures with you, as well as reading all your kind comments of support and encouragement. I’m so proud of our community. We’ve shown an angry and divided world that we can be respectful and we can find common ground. It’s really important to raise sensitive and challenging issues in society, but to do it with a humble curiosity rather than dismissive judgement. Here is something fun and joyful. I dedicate these pictures to all my friends who are One Direction fans. I took these pictures some years ago at the peak of the band’s fame and power. They were all such lovely lads; kind, patient, calm and enthusiastic. They trusted me 100% and it shows in the pictures. I caught unique and authentic moments from them all. We took these pictures in an isolated hotel in the middle of the English countryside. The entire complex was cornered off by security guards. It was as if I was photographing a head of state or government. The last picture in this sequence is of Harry Styles. I recently took my daughter to see him at Madison Square Garden and honesty it was the highlight of my year. That night I saw my 15 year old daughter filled with joy and optimism, and it was beautiful to see her amongst a community that is optimistic and caring. We had a blast. Thank you, Harry for cheering us all up during these difficult times. I wish you all a happy holiday and let us think of all those who have lost loved ones and friends recently. The human spirit is so resilient, and we will get through this together. To all my followers, I salute you.Likes : 11768

![Platon - 11.5K Likes - I photographed Tony Bennett a couple of times both in New York. I loved this man. He was sweet, humble and at peace with himself. He talked for hours about his love of music and musicians—Count Basie, Bill Evans, Billie Holiday, Buddy Rich, and of course, Sinatra, who had once described Tony as the “the best singer in the business.” Tony Bennett was also a painter and he compared the process of mixing colors with singing, especially singing jazz. I am showing you all two of my favorite pictures. I took the color image with my usual light and background. Tony, for a few brief moments, had paused—“What are you thinking about?” I asked. “Bill Evans’ sound,” he replied, “—solitude.” After we had packed up all the studio equipment it was time to leave. Tony was sitting by a window waiting for his lunch. A shaft of natural light caught his profile. Without saying anything I gently unpacked my Hasselblad and guessed the light reading [I didn’t want to disturb the moment]. I took four black and white frames and gently repacked my camera, thinking he hadn’t noticed. “Did you get it?” Tony asked without moving. “I got it,” I said. “My gift to you,” he replied. I left that day on an all time high. Some years later I was in LA with my mum. We were sitting in my favorite diner on Sunset Boulevard. I had some big news to deliver and I was shaking. “Mum,” I said, “I’m going to be a dad.” As my mum touched my hand, a song came on the jukebox—I LEFT MY HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO. We sat in silence listening to Tony Bennett’s beautiful reassuring sound and of course the song ended with the words “your golden sun will shine for me.” Tony Bennett—the day you passed, America lost a little bit of it’s soul. Caption : I photographed Tony Bennett a couple of times both in New York. I set it up to tell the important stories of our time, focusing attention on emerging, courageous leaders and human rights activists around the world. We are celebrating a new set of cultural heroes. Surely, one of the greatest heroes of our time must be Professor Stephen Hawking. He defies all disability and refuses to be defined by adversity. For a sneak peak of my latest Hawking picture and story go to the The Peoples Portfolio.” @peoplesportfolioLikes : 10685

Bush’s legacy is a complicated one – as are all presidential legacies. Yet one thing is crystal clear – he believed in service. Ultimately, he would only be a one-term president; losing a bitter political-cultural fight to Bill Clinton, signaling a new generation of leadership. Yet, despite Bush’s devastating election loss, he wrote a gracious letter to Bill Clinton on Inauguration Day in January 1993 – ‘Your success now, is our country’s success.’ President George H. W. Bush, I salute you.”Likes : 10644

Caption : james comey. “I present to you a true cultural provocateur – a polarizing man who has faced unparalleled criticism from both sides of the political aisle – and by doing so, has ironically provided common ground for so many of our diminutive tribal leaders. James Comey dared to speak truth to power, and I am humbled to have had this historic opportunity to parlay with the man. We talked openly for hours about moral compass, loneliness in leadership, and the current divisive storm in US politics. For a brief moment, I truly believe I was able to see America through James Comey’s eyes. But in order to capture his spirit on film, I needed to know his mind, too. This man is one of the most sincere people I have ever met – clearly driven by principle. With clenched fists, he said ‘I believe that the ballast of America is a shared set of values – truth matters – and this current threat to those values is awakening something – I think people are talking about dignity and respect in a way they didn’t before.’ He went on to describe a devastating forrest fire that eventually burns itself out – thus allowing new growth – new life – new ideas. So, brothers and sisters – this is your first test as Platonic Leaders – whether you agree or disagree with James Comey is not my concern. Everyone is clearly entitled to their own opinion. But leadership comes with a price – responsibility – and our collective duty is to respectfully debate. Let us therefore express ourselves with dignity and compassion. Mudslingers are not welcome here. If you have something to say, then set out a rational case – words matter. Let’s learn from each other, and let us create a platform that we can be proud of. James Comey, I salute you.”Likes : 10620

Caption : Friends, here is one of my favorite pictures. In the mid-late 90’s I was working almost exclusively for John Kennedy Jr.’s George Magazine. Pamela Anderson was to be our next cover story. The stylist had organized beautiful tight fitting couture dresses from Paris for Pammy to wear on the cover, but as I soon discovered, Pammy arrived on set with a secret. She was actually four months pregnant and the bump was beginning to show. Pammy seemed very distressed as she could not fit into any of the gowns that day and was fearful that her pregnancy would become public knowledge. At that point in her career, she wanted to keep her pregnancy private. Faced with an interesting challenge, Pammy asked me if I could solve a problem—how could we make a positive statement about her love affair with America and yet still hide her emerging bump? Instantly I had an idea. “Let’s just wrap you in a giant American flag!” “Brilliant,” she said, “I love it.” The shoot went on to become a classic for George Magazine and was even used as a USO poster to inspire American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in the years to come. At the end of the shoot, Pammy gave me the flag as a gift. She said, “Keep this, it will bring you good luck. Take it in your suitcase to all your important photoshoots. I hope it brings you the same luck it brought me.” It’s the same flag I would later wrap around Muhammad Ali’s shoulders, and it’s the same flag Edward Snowden would cling to in a secret Moscow hotel room. Pammy, you were majestic that day and I salute you.Likes : 10331

Caption : (1/2) alina diaz. “This is a picture about exploitation, perception, and above all, courage. THESE WOMEN are all farm workers in the USA. The lady on the left has her hand on her heart – she is my friend, my hero, and her name is Alina Diaz. Alina has dedicated her life to fighting for the rights of women who are undocumented farm workers in the United States. At the time this picture was taken, it was estimated that 50% of all farm workers in the US were undocumented. Colleagues of mine, in the human rights community, have urged me not to show this picture when campaigning for immigration reform. They claim, that the two masked women on the right look menacing, and play into the perception that undocumented immigrants are bandits and criminals. I AM HORRIFIED BY THIS NOTION. I know THESE WOMEN and nothing could be further from the truth – they are not in America to threaten or steal – NO – they are in fact the most vulnerable members of society, living in the shadows of injustice. If you work in the fields you are supposed to wear projective clothing to guard against poisonous pesticides – THESE WOMEN are given nothing – they cover their mouths and noses with handkerchiefs and cotton bandanas. Their clothes are disheveled – baggy and masculine – THESE WOMEN have learnt from experience not to wear fitted, attractive, and feminine garb – it sexually arouses male predators in the field. THESE WOMEN face sexual harassment and sexual violence on a daily basis. Should we allow the architects of intolerance to shape our human rights narrative? – No my leaders – we must dare to challenge tribal perception first – only then, can we confidently humanize the data. I am a man who lives and thrives in a great city called THE BIG APPPLE. A city nicknamed after a fruit that abundantly grows in it’s surrounding farms and fields. To the courageous women who pick our apples, I salute you. Standby for Alina’s story….”Likes : 10117

Caption : Friends, today is the day! Join us at 5:30pm EST for The People’s Portfolio Award Ceremony. I am so proud to serve inspiring leaders of our time who lead us towards truth and justice. Naomi Wadler is the voice of her generation. I asked her, “If you could speak to all the political leaders in America, what would you say?” Her face remained calm, she paused deep in thought for almost a minute of burning silence, then stated, “Recognize your power and do something!” It’s time for us all to recognize our own collective power. Our Instagram family is now above 230,000 people. This is people power alive and kicking. Please help us to continue supporting and serving leaders like Naomi in the future. Help us to help them. I humbly ask you all for a small donation of $5 each (please see link in bio to register and donate). Our strength is in numbers and know that each dollar you pledge will be matched by my supporting board so your kindness will go twice as far. If you’ve been moved by my stories over the years, this will help us continue our mission. Let’s reset our values and think of others. Naomi Wadler, I salute you.Likes : 10074

Caption : I’ve decided not to call you my followers. I don’t like follower-ship – I believe in leadership. From now on, I will now refer to you all as my leaders. Yes, I have been quiet for a while – no posts. I once asked Edward Snowden about silence, and he said: “Listen to the silence, you just might hear the voices of history talking.” Well, I’m listening Ed. Listening hard. And all I hear is white noise. There isn’t a moment of pause – ever – no time for reflection – just speed, data, and opinionated tribalism. So sometimes I need to step back and return to asking questions. Big questions deserve big answers. In my absence from you, I decided to invite some fascinating people to STUDIO PLATON – disruptors, cultural provocateurs, influencers, leaders. My policy – to connect – to learn about dissonance and turbulence, and to document my lessons on film. They came, and once again I had the great privilege to face history. Stand by for my new pictures and stories – guess who’s first…Likes : 9693

Caption : A note to all my followers. I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you for your wonderful support. Last night was our fundraising event honoring the great Naomi Wadler. She made an uplifting powerful speech calling for action and was supported by a humble and inspiring Senator Cory Booker. The senator showed true leadership in his support for Naomi’s cause and I am honored to have played a small part in bringing these good people together. We made a difference, we lifted hearts and took a moment to reflect where we have come from and where we are going. Let’s work together next year. Let’s be transformative and let’s serve the needs of others. Thank you for kind donations. It will allow us to keep going. Our generous board will continue to match all your donations until the new year, so please follow the link in my bio to donate. I look forward to a new year with new stories to tell and new adventures to share with you all. Big love from your dedicated servant, Platon.Likes : 9308
