Raine Maida Instagram - 18 yrs old . bought two tickets to the Toronto Music awards. a struggling young artist trying to navigate the local music scene. two hours passed. bands I didn’t know performed. won meaningless awards.
just about to vacate. A band of misfits took the stage to close the show. I sat back down. I was transported for the next 10 minutes. That band was The Tragically Hip. This memory came back to me a few years ago. Vivid. Overwhelming feelings. It’s not a tribute really. A sketch of what I experienced. Gord Downie before he was our Gord Downie. He erased all divisions in two short songs.

Severely disappointed the rolling blackouts & power surges across Los Angeles made our show Thursday impossible. Where’s Ray when you need him?!?!
Steve & I ( & Mr Cooke) did our best to run through the set we had planned .
We discussed Spirtual Machines & I threw in some hi def audio of 3 new songs from Spiritual Machines pt.2 as a bonus.

This drug doesn’t work virtually. We did our best the past 16 months but this was a reminder of the humanness of art. The insight into our souls. The meditation of creating and how it connects us. Raine Maida Instagram - Brian Garcia was one the first people I met when moving to Los Angeles back in 2000. He was a music junkie & first class engineer. We worked on a lot of projects together in those early days. Brian was the consummate professional. He was an engineers engineer. Understood the art and science of it but more importantly he cared. He never settled & could magically make the worst sounding drum kit or guitar amp sound great. He could take someone’s 70 track session and somehow make sense of it and deliver a refined & polished mix. Those AKG near field headphones his secret weapon. We had a lot of late nights and many laughs along the way. Life got busy. Kids, career shifts & LA traffic made our time together less frequent as the years went by.
Brian always had a huge smile & even bigger heart. He was an eternal optimist ready to make the best of any situation so when we heard he was in the hospital fighting Covid I never doubted he would win that battle. This was not to be. Brian’s faith was a pillar in his life & i know that during these last few weeks he drew comfort there. Brian touched many lives. Full of knowledge and inspiration. His contribution to the arts will be a profound part of his legacy but his deep laugh & broad smile will be missed most. Gutted. Rest in power my friend.

Doing the work. the process doesn’t feel as romantic as being a vessel but 99x out of 100x it’s facts. count on one hand songs that feel like they were channeled through me compared to the body of work with OLP, my solo albums & MoonVsSun . born through the process. Process isn’t beautiful. Ugly. Unromantic. dirty. Experimenting , failing , feeling worthless, lonely, but suddenly tapping into something inspired deep in the process. Those moments are art. imo. A piece of clay won’t turn into a beautiful sculpture on its own. can’t will it’s form. gotta get in there & mold it. Break it down . Raine Maida - 1.8K Likes - Incredibly sad to hear of Eddie Van Halen’s passing. We spent an incredible summer with Van Halen supporting them on their Balance tour across America. 55 shows in 1995. Eddie instilled a work ethic & perfectionism that we could only aspire to. He came into catering always with a guitar on. Hit the stage 3 hours before the other guys joined for soundcheck & never missed a note night after night . Alex, Sammy & Michael we’re all equally talented but none took the details as seriously as Eddie. I will never forget the day Sammy & I disagreed about my role as a frontman & kicked us off the tour in Texas only to learn Eddie & Alex had our backs & kept us on. We watched their show from the stage every night. I Don’t know if i ever told Eddie the first concert i ever saw was Van Halen at Maple Leaf Gardens with my cousin Nick on their 1984 tour. Ed’s musical legacy can’t be touched. True original in every sense. Musical genius who always let the song rule. Rare. So much more i could express...this is all stream of conscious as i absorb this sad reality.

As much as the musician and fan in me was interested my heart wasn’t. So I didn’t . Tried a few times . Nah.
didn’t sit well with me. Binged so many new series on Netflix, Hulu, HBO etc. guess those are escapes without the same emotional commitment and investments. After all ,they are actors playing a role. No matter how good they are it’s never lost on us that it’s make believe. Music isn’t make believe. At its best it’s as raw and real as it gets. I guess I always knew this but it took the pandemic for me to truly absorb the power & value of a 40 minute piece of grooved plastic. There’s def some science here.
Certain frequencies , isochronic tones , some waveforms all scientifically proven to help heal but it’s that reassurance of better times, deep memories that heighten the feeling of being alive. Protects our souls. Heals our hearts . What a fantastic drug. I’m writing this @5:45 am so won’t get too heavy but... damn. Thank you Jeff Buckley. Thank you Nick Cave. Caption : Found it fascinating that through the pandemic a lot of us relied on our favorite old albums and songs for comfort . I don’t think I listened to any new music. Facts. As much as the musician and fan in me was interested my heart wasn’t. So I didn’t . Tried a few times . Nah. didn’t sit well with me. Binged so many new series on Netflix, Hulu, HBO etc. guess those are escapes without the same emotional commitment and investments. After all ,they are actors playing a role.
