Caption : 🌱Spring offerings ✨ Via @hammer_museum “Starting this weekend, the Hammer will have new exhibition spaces spanning an entire city block along Wilshire Boulevard–starting with Sanford Biggers’ @sanfordbiggers Oracle, inaugurating our outdoor sculpture pedestal at Wilshire and Glendon Avenue.

This 25 feet tall, 7+ ton bronze figure is part of Biggers’s “Chimera” series, which combines the classic figures and movements of Greco-Roman sculpture with a variety of iconic African objects from the 14th to the 20th centuries.

For the next year, Oracle be seen every day by a wide range of people who walk or drive through one of the busiest corridors in the country.

Viewers are invited by the artist to leave an offering at the base of the sculpture. Starting this weekend, feel free to bring an offering of whatever speaks to your heart.

Oracle’s presentation at the Hammer is supported by Marianne Boesky Gallery (@marianneboeskygallery) and is co-presented by the Hammer and Art Production Fund (@artproductionfund).

Caption : Join me at @bronxmuseum’s Gala and Art Auction on March 18th where I am honored to be celebrated by community and presented with the Art + Social Justice Award by my dear friend @juliemehretu 🙏🏿 Tickets are linked in my bio 🔗 This event is more than a full circle moment. The “Mandala of the B-Bodhisattva II” (made in collaboration with @davidellisstudio, 2000) was first showcased at the Bronx museum in their 2001 exhibition, ‘One Planet Under a Groove’, curated by @franklinsirmans and #LydiaYee. It returned to the museum in 2020 during my solo show ‘Codeswitch’ and holds so much of my personal history and spiritual journey. My three years in Japan (1992–95) were a serious spiritual awakening—something that spoke directly and profoundly to me. I grew up in Los Angeles going to a Methodist church, so religion and spirituality weren’t new for me, but the immersion in a Buddhist culture was a paradigm shift. When I returned to the U.S., I was working with mandala forms partly because of my interest in Buddhism (I practiced with Buddhist monks when I was living in Japan), but I was also looking at the circle and all that it means—its physical and bodily references in many different cultures. Some monks perform a ritualistic dance in which the circles they create with their bodies end up being a mandala. The “Mandala of the B-Bodhisattva II” (made in collaboration with @davidellisstudio, 2000) was first showcased at the Bronx museum in their 2001 exhibition, ‘One Planet Under a Groove’, curated by @franklinsirmans and #LydiaYee. It returned to the museum in 2020 during my solo show ‘Codeswitch’ and holds so much of my personal history and spiritual journey. My three years in Japan (1992–95) were a serious spiritual awakening—something that spoke directly and profoundly to me. I grew up in Los Angeles going to a Methodist church, so religion and spirituality weren’t new for me, but the immersion in a Buddhist culture was a paradigm shift. When I returned to the U.S., I was working with mandala forms partly because of my interest in Buddhism (I practiced with Buddhist monks when I was living in Japan), but I was also looking at the circle and all that it means—its physical and bodily references in many different cultures. Some monks perform a ritualistic dance in which the circles they create with their bodies end up being a mandala. For over two decades, Biggers has been working with antique quilts which echo rumors of their use as signposts on the Underground Railroad. He engages these legends and contributes to their narratives by reimagining these quilts as wall sculptures transformed by direct painting and drawing. Exploring often overlooked cultural and political narratives of American history, Biggers has become a collaborator with the past — combining narrative, perspective, and history to speak to current events.
