![Tony Hawk Instagram - My missing photo with Tupac: I attended the American Music Awards in 1991 because my sister was there performing with Michael Bolton. While backstage, I saw Tupac standing alone and I recognized him from Digital Underground (go listen to “Same Song” for context). His first album had not dropped yet, and nobody else seemed to notice him. I took a picture of him and [Riley’s mom] Cindy, and I thought she took one of him and me. This was in the era of point-and-shoot film cameras so results were unreliable. Unfortunately I never found the photo once the roll was developed. But thanks to modern technology and maestro digital artist @_vemix_ , the image has materialized.
And for the record: he was effusive and gracious during our brief encounter, more so than anyone else we met or bothered for pictures that night.

It remained in its original form up until November of last year, after locals rallied the city council and raised funds for resurfacing and slight upgrades. It was inspiring to hear from skaters that grew up here, as the park became their gathering place and, in many ways, their salvation from life’s hardships. It wasn’t the best or most modern design but it served a purpose far beyond a training grounds or competitive landscape. The skaters of Columbus and surrounding areas felt connected to this space in a way that is hard to explain unless you’ve been lucky enough to have a place like it. It was kinked and crusty and beloved for its uniquely flawed design. And now it’s smooth with proper coping, but has kept its shape and raw charm. In some ways, it is the only [literal] concrete legacy of my father’s impact on skateboarding; he knew us skaters as creative misfits that just needed a sense of community to thrive into our adult lives. ![Tony Hawk Instagram - Riley and I went to @bioxcellerator in Colombia to get treatments for [his] joints and [my] neck, which have all suffered consistent trauma through the years. I have a few close friends that made incredible progress with their lingering injuries after visits to the clinic so I’m excited for the results. But first was a skatepark tour with local legend @davidgonzalez. One kid referred to him as “DaVincio” while we were skating and I couldn’t agree more… he even learned my trick in 3 tries 🍝🤠 (Riley couldn’t join us because of a recent shoulder surgery).

Caption : Yesterday I had the privilege of skating Dodge Skatepark, an area that my dad helped to design nearly 35 years ago. It remained in its original form up until November of last year, after locals rallied the city council and raised funds for resurfacing and slight upgrades. It was inspiring to hear from skaters that grew up here, as the park became their gathering place and, in many ways, their salvation from life’s hardships. It wasn’t the best or most modern design but it served a purpose far beyond a training grounds or competitive landscape. The skaters of Columbus and surrounding areas felt connected to this space in a way that is hard to explain unless you’ve been lucky enough to have a place like it. It was kinked and crusty and beloved for its uniquely flawed design. And now it’s smooth with proper coping, but has kept its shape and raw charm. In some ways, it is the only [literal] concrete legacy of my father’s impact on skateboarding; he knew us skaters as creative misfits that just needed a sense of community to thrive into our adult lives. Thanks to Donny @smellycurb for meeting me on this frigid morning and giving me first-hand insight to the rich history of this sacred place. ![Tony Hawk - 95.6K Likes - Riley and I went to @bioxcellerator in Colombia to get treatments for [his] joints and [my] neck, which have all suffered consistent trauma through the years. I have a few close friends that made incredible progress with their lingering injuries after visits to the clinic so I’m excited for the results. But first was a skatepark tour with local legend @davidgonzalez. One kid referred to him as “DaVincio” while we were skating and I couldn’t agree more… he even learned my trick in 3 tries 🍝🤠 (Riley couldn’t join us because of a recent shoulder surgery).
