We are constantly being pulled in a million different directions and never sit with one thought or singular activity for very long. Because of the scattered nature of life in the 21st century, traditional painting can seem like a relic of a bygone era. Oil paintings, such as the ones created by artist Andrew J. West, are meditative and reflective and only unveil their secrets to the viewer with time. A self-taught painter with a dual degree in philosophy and anthropology, Andrew J. West uses his still lifes as an intuitive exploration of the psychological and emotional effects of mark-making, color, and shape. West’s languid paint application seems to soak into the canvas, making his depictions feel like a faded memory. While in conversation with the Impressionist and Intimist masters of the past, West’s paintings are fleeting and extraordinarily contemporary. At times, he contrasts and challenges the tranquil nature of floral still lifes with punctuating drips of paint and the hasty removal of pigment with a palette knife.
