Read to the end for the story of how I got Annette Bening’s (4x Academy Award-nominated) digits in my phone. (Yeah, we text now 🤳🏽💬) I recently had the honor of meeting Annette Bening while picketing in support of the Screen Actors Guild and our sister union, the Writers Guild of America. What a trip to be marching outside the iconic gates of Paramount Studios (where I spent 12 years of my life shooting over 275 episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles) next to my longtime co-star and bestie, @reneefelicesmith (and director @directedbypaul ) As about 100 of us gathered, Annette introduced herself as Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly The Actors Fund), @alifeinthearts letting everyone there know that the Fund is a safety net for EVERYONE in the entertainment industry – particularly in times of great need. If you or anyone you know needs a hand right now, please reach out to them for help with everything from rent, to medical care, to grocery bills, to health insurance counseling, to mental health support. The Fund helps not only actors and writers, but all arts workers: camera operators, dancers, stage managers, casting directors, electrical grips, comedians, prop masters, theatre ushers, you name it!EntertainmentCommunity.org Okay, the fun part: After her speech, I introduce myself as Vice President of the Board of @every_day_action and tell her about the incredible work we do every day (rescue uneaten catered meals from film and TV sets [otherwise destined for the dumpster] – and donate them directly to our food-insecure and unhoused neighbors all over LA). I then tell her how Every Day Action has started working closely with the Entertainment Community Fund by delivering fresh meals to 2 of their housing facilities. She lights up and says, “You MUST to take my number.” My heart stops. I hesitate and before I can inhale, she grabs my phone and enters her (4x Academy Award-nominated) digits. Yeah. We’re basically besties. Annette – I’m huge fan of your incredible work on screen. But I’m a true fanboy for your generosity towards those in need. Thank you. #wgastrong #wgastrike #sagaftra #sagaftrastrong

Last month, I had the honor of performing in Broadway Backwards, a one-night-only benefit concert at the New Amsterdam Theatre in NYC . The hilarious George Abud and I sang, spat, and sword-fought our way through a wildly caustic (if kinky) “Virginia Woolf”-esque take on the classic, “I’d Do Anything” from the musical, OLIVER! Kudos to Bob Bartley for his quick-witted and sharp-tongued script as well as his brilliantly complex but damn-was-it-worth-it staging utilizing about 972 props and 5 costume changes inside a 4 minute number. While the majority of songs in the concert were “park and barks” (where the performer simply stands at the mic and sings) our number was so involved, we rehearsed every day for a week to get it right. Most actors would be put out by that level of time commitment for an unpaid concert, but there was nowhere else on Earth I wanted to be. There’s a certain indescribable magic that sparks up inside the safe and supportive walls of a rehearsal room. From drilling the lyrics, to mastering the harmonies, to solving the complicated math equation necessary to nail the precision of a one count bit of physical comedy – I somehow never get sick of this type of creation, so here I am: manifesting more. ✨ My first Broadway Backwards was back in 2012, when I got to belt out “I Still Believe” from MISS SAIGON with my old pal @tellyleung Now in its 17th year, Broadway Backwards is celebration of LGBTQ stories told through the great songs of musical theater. This year, we raised a record breaking $765,069 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in NYC. I was honored to share the stage with the likes of Len Cariou (in his 16th year!), F. Murray Abraham, Beth Leavel, @msleasalonga @corbinbleu @mrbradybaby @sampauly @robbiefairchild @alistroker @edenespinosa @missadriannahicks @albinokid1026 and a host of other wildly talented humans. I am completely engulfed in this scintillating, eye-opening, and beautifully written book authored by my brilliant sister-in-law, @candidamoss. GOD’S GHOSTWRITERS: Enslaved Christians and the Making of the Bible – is her 7th book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in hidden history, social justice, and, well, all those guys out there who think about the Roman Empire multiple times a week. Seriously, get yourself a copy. I’m usually more of a fiction reader, but I cannot put this down! #godsghostwriters
