Judge has harsh words for the man who fatally shot Kaylin Gillis
A judge had some harsh words for 66-year-old Kevin Monahan during his sentencing for shooting and killing 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis after the car she was a passenger in mistakenly pulled into his rural upstate New York driveway in April 2023.
The defense argued that what happened was a terrible accident. However, prosecutors argued that Monahan acted recklessly. Washington County Judge Adam Michelini ultimately issued the maximum sentence of 25 years to life for Monahan. He also issued a concurrent sentence of up to 7 years in prison for reckless endangerment and a consecutive term of up to 4 years for tampering with evidence.
‘Any remorse you have isn’t from the harm you’ve caused, the only regret you have is that you’re finally facing the consequences for your actions. You murdered Kaylin Gillis. You shot at a car full of people, and you didn’t care what would happen. And you repeatedly lied about it. You deserve to spend the maximum amount of time in prison allowable under our law. And I don’t make this decision because it’s easy, I make it because it’s what’s deserved, I make it because it’s what’s just,’ said Michelini.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – Leaders are asking the public to help a family who is already going through the unimaginable. The story is hard for some to listen to, and it has impacted not only Mahogany Jackson’s family and friends, but total strangers who were shaken by this shocking crime.
Family and friends gathered Thursday evening, Feb. 29, to honor Jackson’s life and legacy after police say she was held against her will and tortured before she was killed.
Birmingham Police have arrested seven people in connection with her death, and have said some of these people recorded parts of the attack on Jackson. We have received reports that the video is being found online.
That video was described by law enforcement as “heinous” and “disgusting.”
Jefferson County’s district attorney is pleading with the public to not share the video out of respect to the family.
“There’s some aspects of this situation I know are devastating to that family, and to see it reenacted on a video – it almost places you there, and then to see people share it over and over, and I know some people may be sharing it for entertainment value or whatever, which is sad in and of itself,” said Danny Carr. “At the end of the day, have some respect for them as well, have some respect for the family, have some respect for Mahogany.”
Police said that they are confident that they have all the suspects in this case in custody.

It wasn’t until I was in college at Michigan State that I realized how little a lot of white people knew about Black people, and frankly, their lack of curiosity about us in general. It was then that I also realized that white people were completely capable of designing a life where they didn’t have to know anything about Black people at all. Black people have had to “learn” white people because so much of our survival and existence depends on what we know about them.
So while this is amusing, it’s also an unfortunate reminder of how precarious our space in the world can be.

SIERRA VISTA & SOUTHSIDE RESIDENT ALERT!
For those of you like me and Lavelle Hawkins who come from or know family in Sierra Vista you need to know about this issue. They have been telling residents of Sierra Vista that their children can ONLY swim in the pool IF they live in the new development. This segregation of this community had caused a division all while city officials did nothing to stop it.
I’ve met with the community and the Housing Authority and although they’ve written to me that they plan to fix it this should have never happened.
Please read the accompanying letter and information about how we intend to help give those residents a ride to the poll Tuesday. Stand up and have your voices heard because as I’ve told them if this issue is not fixed, I will have lost faith in their leadership and will seek to use every opportunity I can to find people who believe actions like these should never happen.
