“My Mother and I have a very bad relationship, she is constantly judging and criticizing me for everything I do– the way I raise my kids, my businesses, my friends, and my husband.
She has embarrassed me in front of people, telling them my secrets and making me look really bad.
I have decided to never talk to her again, but I can’t forgive her and I am holding lots of anger towards her.
I don’t feel like this with anyone else in this world.
We are supposed to love our mothers but she is a bad mother, jealous, envious, and hurtful.
I don’t know what to do.”
My response:
I understand you feel hurt, angry, and also guilty about having those feelings.
But you don’t need to make any permanent decisions about whether you will ever talk to your mother again for the rest of your life.
And similarly, don’t feel you need to rush into forgiveness before you are genuinely in that place.
For now, it is enough to give yourself space from her to regain your inner calm and composure.
When you feel more settled, and you feel ready, you can tell your mother that even if she can’t stop thinking in a critical and judgmental way, you expect her to stop speaking her judgments and criticisms.
If she can learn to do that, then you could offer her a chance to begin rebuilding a relationship based on mutual respect, honor, and love.
If she says she can’t or won’t, then you need to assess whether you are strong enough to ignore her destructive behavior, or if you need to give it still more time.

“If I’m doing what I love to do for a living is that an indication that I’m living my highest purpose or should I be constantly reaching for more of myself?
And If I’m constantly striving for more from the universe, how do I strike that balance between that striving and just being satisfied with who and where I am?”
My Response:
If you are doing what you love, that is your highest purpose.
The joy and satisfaction you find in your work will naturally keep you growing and learning because that brings even greater fulfillment and satisfaction.
Living your purpose is not a question of striving or sitting back.
The alert attention of awareness that comes with doing what you love keeps your mind and heart awake and interested in new possibilities all the time.
In that sense, striving isn’t hard work or ego-driven, it is the joy of exploration and curiosity.
And for those on the path of awakening, there is no “sitting back and being satisfied with where I am.”
That state of fulfillment and joy is not static, it is dynamically engaged in transforming the world through love, gratitude, compassion, selfless service, teaching, and creative problem-solving.

“When you love unconditionally, and the other party has struggles such as alcohol or substance abuse ….but is a good person, and just hasn’t reached the realization to get help yet…should you end the relationship?
Everything I believe is to ‘stay the course,’ especially since the struggles have been more so in the last few years vs the near 40-year relationship.
But some say walk away if the relationship doesn’t serve you anymore.”
My response:
Each relationship is unique and has its own particular history.
And in your case, that is a 40-year history.
There is no simple formula that can be applied to your situation to tell you whether you should end your relationship or not.
You say that you love him unconditionally and that he is a good person.
Hold on to those truths, live every day from that place in your heart, and you will find that whatever decision you need to make will be the right decision because it comes from the truth of your heart.

“When I meditate, especially with a guided meditation that deepens the experience, I often go into a trance-like state that feels sleepy.
Sometimes it can be challenging to feel awake again for some time.
What can help to create balance between deeper calmer states of consciousness and the alertness that is needed to function in the work world?”
My response:
The deep sleepy state that you sometimes have in meditation is perfectly fine.
Your mind/body is getting exactly the experience it needs at that time.
If you need to take a little longer to come out of meditation so that you feel ready for activity, then take an extra minute or two.
It just means that the release process is still finishing up.
If you have the opportunity and time, lie down for 5 minutes at the end of meditation to let it fully release.

“I’ve been having a tough time these past couple of months because my mind can’t seem to stop questioning reality.
It constantly questions it to the point where it sucks the enjoyment out of everything.
I wanted to know how you would approach something like this and what some of your tips are for this.”
My response:
The only reality that matters and the only indisputable truth is your inner reality, your true Self.
Without the reality of your Self, there is no basis for questioning the reality of your perceptions.
Without a Self to experience it, there is no basis for any thought, emotion, or sensation.
So my advice is to stop relying on your thoughts to evaluate reality, and just be yourself, and enjoy the present moment.
That is the only reality you have, and the only one you need.

“I am actively participating in several of your meditation experiences.
The last one “Manifesting grace through gratitude” has given me enormous insights and shifts in awareness.
I have taken steps in seeing all human beings as one instead of being separated individuals and I can see their ego struggles through their actions. I can feel compassion for each and everyone, except for my husband.
Why is it so difficult to detach from all the insults and accusations that are thrown at me by my husband?
Why am I not able to see his struggling ego?
Please help me gain insight as it is difficult for me to stay committed to my marriage this way, although I do wish to regain a connection with my husband again.”
My response:
Firstly, there is no excuse for your husband insulting you.
So you don’t need to feel bad about not feeling compassionate about his behavior.
The other thing is that certain people in our life are so much a part of our hearts and soul, that we no longer seem to have any defense against them at the subconscious level.
The hurt and attacks from them go so deep that it feels like we are being hurt from the inside.
Healing this depth of trauma requires that we find our core self, our whole, unhurt self at our essence.
Through meditation or other spiritual practices, we reclaim this healthy, whole center of our Being, and from there we heal the old hurts and learn to see these attacks and insults as the foreign and irrelevant behavior it truly is.
