My semi-annual reminder to music students (and teachers). Somehow feels like we need it a little earlier this year.

The great Peter Schickele (aka P.D.Q. Bach) died earlier this month. What a tremendous loss for classical music. He took the air out of stuffy classical music in the most erudite way, endlessly inventive and laugh-out-loud funny way. Thank you, Maestro, for all of the laughter and joy.
Sublime.
Come sing with me next Christmas in New York! A.I. thinks I’m old. Or Steve Zissou. But this is what happens when I type “Eric Whitacre in the snow in New York.” It was all to announce a concert of Christmas music with @dciny next year that you can join. We will perform my Christmas opera Gift of the Magi, Lux Aurumque, Glow, and even The Seal Lullaby (which feels like Christmas). What other pieces should I include? They don’t have to be written by me — in fact the more new holiday music the better!
What a joy and a privilege to hear the incomparable @jacobcollier perform in such an intimate setting. And his new album Djesse Vol. 4 continues his extraordinary evolution as one of the greatest artists of our time.
Laurence and I saw L.A. Story last night for Valentine’s. (In the theatre!! Thank you @am_cinematheque!!). We adore that movie, brilliantly written (and acted) by the one and only @stevemartinreally.

From the premiere last week of “You Feel Like Home”, my transcription of the first five movements of The Sacred Veil. Beautifully and soulfully brought to life by @salastinala. If you look in the left hand corner of the screen you can see @laurence_servaes and me basking in their sound.

I’m conducting my synths! This was the first experiment for a new piece I’m writing for choir and electronics — I can modulate the sound by moving my hands closer to the antenna. Huge thank you to my friend and mentor @lesjamusic for helping me solve this (and a myriad of other synth stuff). For my fellow modular nerds, this is just the @doepfer_musikelektronik A-178 sending signal to the @instruomodular Arbhar scan CV, which is in Omega mode (so all six buffers get scanned).

A HUGE thank you to @qubitelectronix for so quickly sending me a replacement module of my beloved Nautilus. It (and the Mojave) are proving to be invaluable instruments in this new piece I am writing for choir and electronics.
