We ran this @gettyimages photo with my column today about #Gaza. The column quoted from the WhatsApp texts of a linguistics scholar in Gaza to his friend, recounting all that he and his family have endured over five months of war. It’s heartbreaking, and this photo captured that raw emotion as well. Gazans have been dehumanized, and we’ll get a more humane policy when we again put human faces on their suffering. I hope you’ll read the column, too.
Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, a champion of mental health issues and important adviser to her husband, President Carter, died this morning at 96. RIP, Mrs Carter, and condolences to the family.
From my latest column about Gaza and the Middle East.
My valentine, right after we got engaged. It has been a few years now, and our love has only grown.
Marathon proud!

There is so much pain and war and suffering around the world, so many reasons to despair — but let’s not lose sight of what we can achieve when we work together to ease that suffering. My year-end column notes that global child mortality appears to have set a new low this year of 3.6 percent of children dying by age five. One million fewer kids died in 2023 than in 2016. Global extreme poverty also hit a new low, with 100,000 people exiting poverty each day. All this should spur us on to address the other challenges we face, from war to climate change.
The family that skis together stays together. Or gets broken legs together. We’re on Mt Bachelor in Central Oregon. I backpack every summer around Three Sisters (the mountains in the background), so it’s very cool to ski the same area in winter.
I’ve long admired @adamgrant’s books, so I was thrilled to get this endorsement from him for my forthcoming memoir, “Chasing Hope.” And “Chasing Hope” is now available for pre-order from all bookshops, if you’re looking for a present that will build with anticipation. 😀
I’m thrilled that Buzz Books has listed its buzzy books for spring/summer 2024 and that my memoir, “Chasing Hope,” is being buzzed about. Maybe that’s because “Chasing Hope” offers hope at a time we all need some. And — hint, hint — “Chasing Hope” is available now for pre-order online or wherever books are sold. Enjoy!
The U.S.-led airstrikes on the Houthis in Yemen have me recalling this interview with Mohammad al-Houthi in Sanaa, Yemen, in 2018. A wild interview. The challenge for the West is how to deter Houthi attacks on shipping without triggering a wider war or amplifying the suffering of ordinary Yemenis.
Everest may be taller, but I love Mt. Hood. I backpack around it in summer and snowshoe and ski it in winter. Sheryl @wudunn and I were skiing on the slopes of Mt Hood Meadows today, looking down from the lift at the Timberline Trail that we hike in the summers. Glorious! Mt. Hood rocks. And so does Sheryl.

Reading my new memoir, Chasing Hope, for the audiobook version. It’s a painstaking process in a studio with a producer and audio engineer making sure everything is exactly right. I’m always impressed by the care that @aaknopf and @prhaudio put into making sure the reading is perfect. The book and audiobook will be released in May, but both are available for order now wherever books are sold.
I spoke with my @nytimes colleague David Leonhardt about his new book, “Ours Was the Shining Future” — and about how to fix America.
One of my very favorite novelists is @kristinhannahauthor. Until now my fave of her books was “The Nightingale” but she has surpassed herself in a new novel coming out early in 2024, “The Women,” which I enthusiastically recommend. All of which is to say that I was thrilled to get this endorsement from Kristin about my own forthcoming memoir, “Chasing Hope.” You work for a long time on a book but you don’t really know how others will react to something as personal as a memoir, so the response warms my heart. And if you’re looking for a holiday present, “Chasing Hope” is available for preorder (as is “The Women”) wherever books are sold. Thanks, Kristin!
We put up an impregnable deer fence around our orchard and vineyard five years ago, but we have unusually athletic deer. The other day, we spotted five deer frolicking inside the orchard. We think we heard them laughing at us. We caught this one on a wildlife camera, smacking her lips at the thought of our apples.
In the journalism world, @anncurry is the real deal. I saw her in action in Darfur, Pakistan and elsewhere, and she’s a fantastic reporter who worked so hard to use her platform for good. So I’m thrilled with this blurb from her about my forthcoming new memoir, Chasing Hope. Check it out. It’s available now for order wherever books are sold.
Don’t tell anyone, but I’m a fan of thrillers, especially Lee Child’s series about Jack Reacher. So it was, er, thrilling to get this endorsement from Lee Child about my forthcoming memoir, “Chasing Hope” (which, nudge, nudge, is available now for pre-order).
Thanks @joescarborough and @mikabrzezinski for having me on @morningjoe! For those looking to make the most of this holiday season by giving to a greater cause, consider supporting one of the remarkable organizations featured in this year’s @KristofImpact #HolidayImpactPrize (link in bio): @PerScholas, @Camfed, @OneGoalGraduation, @Welcome.us 🎁
Thrilled by this starred review in Booklist of my forthcoming memoir from @aaknopf, “Chasing Hope”!! “Exquisitely nuanced” is music to an author’s ears. “Chasing Hope” is available for order now wherever books are sold (sorry, Jeff Bezos, but ideally that’s an independent bookstore).
All the grim news can leave us feeling powerless. But we’re not, and my annual giving guide is meant to work with readers to show how we can help make a difference. With readers we’ve raised $34 million in the last few years for great nonprofit, and this year I hope we’ll do better than ever — because this year’s @kristofimpact nonprofits are my readers’ all-time favorites. Check out the link in my bio to see my column describing them.
