14 years and one day ago in NYC was the last night I ever had a drink. I couldn’t stop. Even though I’d tried many times. I didn’t know how to not do it, but I knew that I had to stop or I was going to end up financially ruined, divorced and dead. So I asked someone who had what I wanted how they did it, and then just did what they told me. Like they say, it’s a day at a time. Sometimes it’s one hour, or five minutes at a time. But slowly, in the words of @matthewmitcham88 – you build up a life in sobriety that you’re not willing to lose . There’s no way this happened because of self-will or willpower. That was the problem. This is the result of humility being thrust upon me and knowing that my way of handling things wasn’t working, and that other people had better ideas that were healthier and less destructive. Do I do it perfectly? No. Am I still an untold punish to my wife? More than I’d like to be (my account of this is probably different from hers – believe her version). Even though sometimes it’s hard – the life, the family, the career I have now would have been impossible were I still drinking. It’s no exaggeration to say that if I was still drinking and using I’d be long gone. So today I’m grateful for all the kind, smart and generous people who showed me how to do this, because you all gave me a life I could never have dreamed of. xx

Once you’ve built the biggest magnet tile tower of all time – how do you demolish it? Easy. Put on Dad’s motorbike gear (including jacket with body armour) and just send it. So committed. I adore this guy. I adore that the demo plan was his Mum’s idea. Love his thumbs up to show he’s all good.
Last week, I crossed the threshold of 14 years of sobriety. 14 years, which sounds like a lot. Really it was just 5114 days done pretty much exactly the same. My man David taught me the pretty simple formula: Get to bed without drinking or using, don’t hurt myself or anyone else, get help if I need it, try to help someone else, if I make a mistake try to make it right as quick a I can, then get your head on the pillow. You do that, you’ve done it perfectly. Simply do it again tomorrow. And that’s kind of it. There is absolutely no question that if I hadn’t stopped drinking I wouldn’t be here. However, getting sober is one thing. Staying sober is another. At first, it’s pretty clear what you’ve got to do because the whole thing is new and you’re learning a new way of living your life and your choices are pretty clear. Yet as you get a bit of time up, you realise that while the problems that came from your drinking aren’t a daily occurrence any more – the problems that you were drinking to avoid still linger. So you have to deal with that stuff. I made a podcast about some of the ways I deal with that stuff. I hope you like it, or that it is something you can send to a mate who might need to hear it. @robertirwinphotography came by our home for today’s podcast. He’s a very, very impressive man. Terri was here too, but you’ll have to listen to discover what she did in my front yard for the 1.5h that Robert and I chatted… search “Better Than Yesterday” where you pod or link the link x

Top stuff @waverleycouncil. Makes the daycare/gym/home ride on the @lugandcarrie a breeze.
I used to own cats. I loved having cats. If my wife wasn’t so allergic, I’d still have cats. However when it comes to cats, “with great power comes great responsibility”. Not an anit-cat rant. However, after seeing a poster for a lost cat on the way to dropoff the other day, I got curious about house cats and their effect on native wildlife – and the numbers are frankly staggering. – listen now, search Better Than Yesterday where your podcasts are or use the link in the thing
