Best way to discover a new city? Go for a walk or run, with no agenda or set mileage.* My jet lag in Tokyo meant that I was wide awake at 3, 4am with plenty of energy to go for a run. There’s something simultaneously meditative and exhilarating about being the only one on the road during those quiet hours, exploring a new environment that’s normally bustling with people. Loved seeing so many temples and monuments lit up in the signature neon Tokyo light. Thank you @ecpgram for journeying around Tokyo with me! *Of course, it’s important to do some research beforehand to make sure where you’re running is safe, and pair up with a buddy if you can!
I had an incredibly poignant Medal Monday experience, underscoring the global impact of @chrisnikic and the #Runner321 movement. Started the day with a celebratory breakfast with @deafworldrunnertom, a champion for inclusion in running and trailblazing Six Star elite runner (x2!). As we were walking around afterwards, we were stopped by a man with Down Syndrome, Ryota, who was admiring the cherry blossoms with his mom. He asked about the medals we were wearing and wanted to take a picture with them. We started chatting and I told Ryota all about our experience running the Tokyo Marathon. His face lit up when I shared that I was running Tokyo as a guide for Chris to encourage more people with Intellectual Disabilities to build community, confidence, and health through sports. He kept pointing at the photos of Chris and saying what his Mom translated to, “Like me!” Ryota’s Mom said she’d never seen someone with Down Syndrome achieve such an athletic feat. He was so excited by the idea that he could run the Tokyo Marathon himself. I could see their perception about what’s possible shifting during our conversation. This flash of inspiration happens every time someone hears about Chris and all the athletes with IDD who are building the #Runner321 movement globally. So proud and grateful to be part of it. I hope to run alongside Ryota at a marathon in the future. #MedalMonday #TokyoMarathon #tokyomyfavoriteplace

In Tokyo to help @chrisnikic set a new World Record and achieve his dream: to be the first person with Down Syndrome to earn the prestigious Six Star Medal. This is a pinnacle of achievement in the marathon world, representing that you’ve run all six World Marathon Majors: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’m grateful and excited to guide Chris in the @tokyomarathonfoundation this Sunday, March 3, alongside fellow endurance sports pioneer @rhondamvetere. Chris Nikic is one of my favorite people in the world — an incredible friend and source of boundless positivity, fun, and motivation. When I started training for my first IRONMAN, I would search social media for inspiration and to connect with other triathletes. At the time, Chris was training to make history as the first person with Down Syndrome to complete an IRONMAN. I instantly connected with his #Runner321 mission of promoting inclusion in sports and demonstrating that we are all capable of so much more than we realize. Chris and I have been friends for several years now, with adventures taking us from our homes in Florida and California, to around the world. His 1% better philosophy of training has inspired countless athletes around the world (myself included!), and he’s building a Center of Excellence in Florida to train and support athletes with Down Syndrome and other Intellectual Disabilities to achieve personal milestones in sports and in life. Guiding Chris in Berlin, under the mentorship and friendship of @amandakenny87, was the most fun and meaningful experience I’ve had in running. Now, I can’t wait to journey the streets of Tokyo to help Chris exceed his goal and show the world what’s possible when you believe in your potential and work hard to make 1% improvement. Every. Single. Day. GO CHRIS! Let’s make some history! #tokyomarathon #tokyomyfavoriteplace

One year ago today, I crossed the finish line in Miami. 7 triathlons on all 7 continents in 7 consecutive days, all to raise awareness for mental health recovery. Happy Anniversary to the World Triathlon Challenge. 🌎🏊🏼♂️🚴🏼♂️🏃🏻 The past year has been transformational. I’m forever grateful to the global triathlon community – and all of you – for making this seemingly impossible challenge a reality. Investing in your mental health makes you stronger, and you can reinvent yourself at any age. We’re just getting started.
