I was lucky to do some super early character explorations of some of the characters in the movie with @posborne and @hellokarenryan back in 2016- so proud and happy that the movie was made- Congratulations to all the amazing artists that poured so much passion and love behind this project***

Wind blowing in the trees at night 🌙
“Story is King” This slogan was written on the front entrance of my high school animation class at Rowland Heights High School. Over the course of my sophomore year my initial ideas of drawing, films, art and learning itself all unraveled under the influence of my mentor Larry Kurnarsky (RIP). One of Larry’s biggest ideas was that grades had no value if you weren’t truly learning on a deep level. He took away the fear of failing based on grades and consistently focused on promoting critical observation and group discussion when learning animation or any subject! Unlike most teachers, he never gave us the “correct” answer to any problem. To learn how to animate the bouncing ball, we stood up and dropped balls and tried to make observations about them. From tennis balls to bowling balls to bricks, we learned by observing it in real life, animating and asking questions to ourselves and our peers. At the end of a semester, Larry cared more if someone learned one assignment on a deep level then if one had followed a generic curriculum of assignments. If we could learn the bouncing ball assignment in a deep way over one semester- it was a success in his eyes! He brought this same approach to learning storytelling. He was the first person to ever question.. that’s a cool drawing shiyoon.. but does it push your story forward? How does this dramatize the overall theme? What’s the difference between an event and a story? What is this story really about? All of this went over my head as a tenth grader but his words still resonate years later whenever I read, write and draw! Larry approached the medium of animation no different from the medium of film: everything was designed to serve the story and it’s ultimate purpose was to try to give meaning and value to our human experience. This book is an invaluable piece of his point of view on storytelling; something he preached every day to his students over decades.
