Plants in home design just work. Whether faux or real, large or small, they help to create breaks within the design and present some visual interest throughout the space. I’ll never tire of seeing these dramatic transformations. Sure, it’s impressive, visually. But more than that, I love imagining how my clients will live in and interact with the space. My goal is to make you fall in love with your upgraded design AND to improve your life with it. When I’ve done both, I know I succeeded.
“Sons are the anchors of a mother’s life.” —Sophocles My life journey hasn’t taken the trajectory I thought it would, but it’s so much better than I could have ever imagined! Out of all the roles I have throughout my life, none means more to me than being a mom. My two boys challenge me, surprise me, and fill me with so much love and awe. Its a privilege to have a front-row seat to their lives and development. My biggest hope is that I have given them the joy and fulfillment in their little lives that they’ve given me.
I shared a bit of my journey on the blog this week, and the biggest takeaway was that nothing worth working towards happens overnight. Success in any industry takes a lot of sacrifice, and yes, a great deal of stress. This isn’t for the faint of heart. People often ask me how I do all I do. The honest answer is that it’s tough! What you see as glamorous and exciting is just the tip of the iceberg. Behind the scenes there’s a lot of work and long hours, and many hills to climb. And yet, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I love what I do. It takes guts, but I’m built for it!
“Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax.” –Mark Black That lesson above wasn’t very easy for me to learn. For most of my life, one of my various roles—single mom, interior designer, TV personality, to name a few—always took the front seat of my time and attention. I had to learn to find “Breegan” and give her a break sometimes. Sometimes that meant taking a trip abroad or to my favorite local resort. These days, I’ve found ways to do that at home, and my @clarke_clarke_interiors wallpapers help facilitate it. The various designs remind me of my favorite places that fill me with serenity and inner peace. Both contemporary and tropical, this Malindi print transports me back to LA’s gorgeous coastline, where I call home, and all of my fond memories there come flooding back to mind. One of the things I love most about interior design is its ability to influence the way we feel in a space. Let’s discard the flowery language for a bit and truly think about where you most want to be when you need a dose of inspiration, a moment of peace and tranquility, or a ton of unyielding energy. You likely imagined a bedroom, an office or maybe even a home gym. Perhaps you thought about your parents’ kitchen or living room. No matter what came to mind, I’m willing to bet the accompanying sensations were powerful. THAT, my friends, is what I want my @clarke_clarke_interiors line to do for your homes. I hope that you will select fabrics and wallpapers that bring an energy to your spaces you can’t wait to come home to each day. In my opinion, that’s what good design is and does. My first rule of thumb when it comes to home project deadlines: throw the deadlines out the window! Contractors and vendors rarely meet deadlines for various reasons, and it’s just easier to have a flexible mindset versus getting frustrated. Because my boys and I will be living in our new home before it’s completely done, we’re against the clock with some of the home spaces. Time is of the essence! . . . . 🎥: @jondavolio
There’s something about the tranquil blue sky dotted with soft pastel hues that always brings me closer to nature’s elements. This is the feeling I hope people experience when they install my Nairobi wallpaper print in their homes. You know the Venice Beach that you see in movies, with the sunny skies and pretty perfect weather? Well, no, that’s not CGI magic. And yes, that is our home. The skate community in this photo was a big part of my survival as a single mom with small boys. We would sit as a family on this little hill and enjoy the amazing weather together. The boys have known and been able to bask in the weather, culture and community they were raised in all their lives. I am a Venice Beach girl through and through, and we are an LA family. I have a feeling that we always will be…and that’s totally fine with us!
What do you look for in a property rental? I definitely want a clean and modern space, but any little extras never hurt! When designing the Can Camino space, I wanted to incorporate some cute details that may make the stay better for potential renters. I think this swing is a great feature that will help create some great photo memories! . . . . 🎥: @jondavolio
Isn’t it funny how a photo can instantly bring back so many memories and make it feel like it was just yesterday? This was the porch of the first home for my family. We were just steps from the sand, not too far from where we are currently. It was hard to give up the former perceived security not knowing exactly where we’d end up. But I knew I had to make things happen for these two babies, no matter what. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished. These throwback photos make me reflective, but also extremely appreciative of what life has become.
It’s so interesting how home design trends come and go. Take sunken living rooms. Popular from the 60s through the 80s, the design created an intimate gathering space for family and friends to gather in the home. Well, they’re making a comeback! Ever walked into a space and a piece of decor immediately caught your eye and made you gasp in delight? That’s “Boa.” One of the things I loved most about creating my lighting line with @savoy.house.lighting was the ability to allow my mind to imagine how lighting in all forms can contribute to a space without bounds. Lighting can truly be art for your room, and Boa, with its frosted, cascading feathers and warm brass finish absolutely steals the show in any home. This is a solid recommendation if luxury is your goal.
These girls are often just very young teens when they are taken to undergo #FGM. It is a custom that is meant to prepare them for child marriage, ensuring their “eligibility” and “desirability.” It robs these girls of the chance at the life they deserve, and we are determined to see it end, globally. I work in Kenya towards this mission, and this past week we took our hearts, passions and education to Capitol Hill. So many people are sacrificing to help #endFGM. Walking the red carpet for media events is so surreal. Many people take the red carpet as a symbol of status or exclusive access. That makes sense, I guess. For me, it’s more than that. It is a reminder to always pursue my life’s passions, to never give up, and to never give in to those who don’t believe in my ability to achieve all I set out to do. No, I haven’t arrived yet, but being able to walk this coveted runway lets me know I’m well on my way…and going in the right direction.

It’s one thing to love what you do. It’s an entirely different ballgame when you ADORE who you do it with! I feel so incredibly fortunate to have partners like the @kravetinc team who help this collection reach new heights everyday. It was an honor to travel to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. to visit these stunning showrooms, talk about my new collection with @clarke_clarke_interiors, and meet so many of YOU! I got to be a part of the @womeninluxurydesign Empowered Design Summit, and it was truly inspiring! I always leave with my heart and mind full when I gather with other amazing, strong and talented women. There is nothing like witnessing women supporting other women from a genuine place of love and respect. I was glad my little ones got a chance to see that in action. Thanks for having me!
