Our Feb Issue cover story features actress, author, educator and marine biologist @ochoachristina @promisedlandabc @animalkingdomtnt @millionlittlethingsabc
We loved chatting about her roles; how she takes on projects; juggling acting with marine biology; and how she uses her platform to teach students STEAM. On Animal Kingdom, she told us, “Craig and Renn are an interesting dynamic that I think was one of the most fun things to play with. @robboben_ and I talked about it all of the time. They are just meant to be together and they have no idea how! They act like they are going to explode or implode, you never know. I think that in the last season coming up soon, we get to see maybe what it’s like for them to really come together in a new way. Like for the first time, maybe not as opponents, but teammates.”
We also chatted about he role as Veronica on Promised Land. She told us, “the thing about Veronica that I gravitated to the most from the get go, she was in this very male dominated environment – very muy mucho – her father, her brothers and siblings – everyone around her. Yet, she managed to tap into a very powerful position without having to emulate the men or compete with them on their turf and that was something very intriguing to me.”She noted, “this is such an important milestone in the journey for real diversity on Network TV and ABC [took] an entire Latin cast and infuse the show behind the camera with a lot of Latin crew… Human first, entertaining second.. Veronica in particular, is just one more version of diversity that I want to see.. So yes they’re all Latin but that’s #10 on their list when you describe them. There is diversity of thought..perspective..political opinions within this Latin family and you get all of that, what a beautiful thing. That’s a diversity no-one talks about.. very close to my heart. Heteradox thinking is the number 1 thing I want to to see in a group of characters all defined by this one common denominator.”

Weekend barn dances, horses, dogs and laughs.
Earlier this week my friends and I got together in Miami to collect ocean plastic & discuss the upcoming votes for international policy about plastic waste. It’s bittersweet to witness the amount of trash washing up on beaches all around the world (a reality the @4Ocean crew unfortunately see every day), but also an incredibly rewarding experience and served as a jumping off point for so many discussions and initiatives..
@h.fisk.johnson is @SCJ’s CEO and chairman & along with #DebFiddelke has implemented and initiated countless corporate programs & led the way in that (highly complex) effort to ensure a more sustainable, transparent and healthy future. They shared their strong stance on the Extended Producer Responsibility Federal policies (EPR) internally and with the Senate committee on Environment & Public Works. Scientist #DallasMatz also tested multiple samples from each location for micro-plastics & this data continues to serve propel initiatives and much needed research.
@alexjschulze (4ocean founder), @grateful.grant @j@josh_liberman @henryrbliss @dominicmanzo & the entire crew do this clean-up work every day, they see the worst of what people discard carelessly and yet they approach each day with enthusiasm, a smile and inexplicable energy. I can’t express how inspired I was to see the passion shown in what could be (for most people) a very draining and disheartening experience. They are, despite all odds, bursting with hope.
Influencers, public figures and individuals with countless privileges and opportunities to turn a blind eye to the situation, like this impressive group: @dr.evanantin @hofitgolanofficial @toddkrim @_katiemljohnson, but who nevertheless prefer to put their resources/efforts/time into furthering these causes… are so important in a world mostly focused on the personal gain. I’ve seen these wonderful people consistently strive to become better informed, more educated, and more dedicated to the ocean in ways I can only hope to emulate.
