Popped over to London to support my bestie @lylarow as she laid to rest our beloved Auntie Rachel, but tho the day started off sad, we ended in celebration.
Can’t believe this choon is 30 YEARS OLD.

It’s been a sad couple of weeks for me.
Those of you who’ve read my book will know my friends James ‘Rocky’ Williams & his wife Bernice.
I met Rocky as a young fledgling elevator engineer, when he was flown over from NYC to London to help us build the elevators at the Canary Wharf Tower.
Seeing the racist & sexist abuse I was suffering as the first woman engineer, he took me under his wing. I met his wife Bernice, a few months after we met, when I visited NYC. She welcomed me into her home, and wouldn’t let me near a McDonald’s for the next few weeks, as she cooked hearty Caribbean food, & wouldn’t allow me in her kitchen, which was fine by me 🤣
They pretty much adopted me into their lives, with their son Rawle, and for the last 30 years, they have been my American family.
I had no idea that when I sent a limo to their house to pick them up & bring them to my show in NYC last summer, as that was the only way I could force them to sit thru an hour of me swearing, that that would be the last time I’d be able to spoil them both.
I received a call 2 weeks ago that Bernice had fallen ill.
I spoke to her on the phone briefly & grabbed a flight from LA. By the time I got there, she was non verbal, but was aware of her surroundings. Her hospital room was full of family, friends & everybody who loved her. And I was glad I was able to hold her hand & kiss her goodbye before she passed 2 days after I arrived.
I flew back to NYC this week for her ceremony. And tho it was sad, she received the most beautiful send off from her church and her entire community.
I’m glad Rocky & Rawle are surrounded by their loving extended family.
These are pics from when they visited me in LA, back in 2011 in my little one bed in Hollywood.
We had a blast, & I was looking forward to hosting them again, this time at my house, where they wouldn’t have to sleep on a rickety sofabed from Craigslist, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Bernice was kind, sweet, & had these big, expressive eyes, & I will miss her lilting Trinidadian accent & her laugh.
Rest well Bernice. Love you. 💔

This man’s work made me see the value of the art, & how it can elicit emotions in a way I never thought possible.

I also don’t enjoy going to fancy events, 1- coz I feel self conscious amongst all these big name celebs & 2-I hate red carpets, & again self consciousness & imposter syndrome.
But I will find someone fun there that I know & will have a blast I’m sure, although I always dread going.

2023 has a been transition year for me.
There have been career highs, (I’m a SHOWRUNNER FFS!) that have come with great new learning experiences, new responsibilities, exhaustion, an even higher awareness of microaggressions & a new belief in what is possible for me, but tempered by what is the reality for me as a black woman in this industry.
There have been a couple of health issues, but whatever! That’s life with an autoimmune disease. I try not to let those things stress me too much. I’m either super positive or burying my head in the sand. A little bit of both.
I have great new and old friends, my family is healthy, my home life is splendid & I count myself very fortunate.
2024 brings a bittersweet ending to my life-changing show @bobheartsabishola, & I’m looking forward to new adventures, uncertainty & all.
THINGS TO TRY AND LET GO OF IN 2024:
That little bit of imposter syndrome I still cling to.
My tendency to latch onto small annoyances & escalate them to nuclear levels
My unbelievable skill of procrastination.
My chocolate & sugar binging. (That one’s probably impossible)

When you semi famous in the UK, sometimes you get invited to do Celebrity versions of reality shows.This one, in 2005, was #fameacademy which was an Idol rip off, which was a #popstars ripoff.
Some of these celebs could actually sing & were on this show, low-key tryna get recording contracts..
My singing voice was known for causing nosebleeds & brain death 😂
I was there as comic relief…
