Glynis Barber Instagram – My namesake, the wonderful Glynis Johns, has died at the age of 100!
It was a bit of a shock when I was watching the news to hear the words “actress Glynis… has died!” There aren’t many of us Glynis’s around.
Coincidentally Glynis Johns was born in South Africa like me, although her family were just passing through at the time. I met her once when in my teens she came to South Africa to appear in a play and my mother insisted on going backstage and to my mortification, told her I’d been named after her. This was the first I’d ever heard of it!
Glynis had a famously husky voice and sang the original version of “Send in the clowns” by Sondheim. She’ll always be remembered as the wonderful suffragette mother in Mary Poppins. She had a truly incredible career and won many awards.
She survived numerous husbands and made it to 100. And now there’s one less Glynis in the world. We’re a dying breed.
Rest in peace the utterly fabulous Glynis Johns. #glynisjohns #rip | Posted on 05/Jan/2024 15:54:30
