Gothic! Secretive. Mystical. Georgian. And very Dickensian; old Charlie boy’s “Bleak House” vibes… A Meaty 🍖 chunk of a book 📖 which I sometimes dreaded going back to 😂 😂 BUT absolutely loved 🥰 it when I did!
Family drama 🎭 amplified over a will, contracts & lawsuits – the toxicity bleeds 🩸 out within the living realm after death ☠️
*Division* at the heart ❤️ of it all…
18th Century, Cornwall, Bath, London – murder, conspiracy, a circus 🎪 of lies & unexpected “reveals” – skilfully directed… by the “cards” 🃏 & the author ✍️
Red (our young female heroine 💪) has never known her Mother (a mystery to be solved) & she travels with her Gypsy father 👨 ❤️ & doll utilising an ancient method called The Square of Sevens, to tell fortunes 🔮 for people in order to survive.
Sadly poor little Red loses her Dad 💨 early on in the story & her wee doll gets thrown into the fire 🔥 😢 BUT “rebirth” after loss is the key 🔑 & focus… amongst this twisted tale investigating the truth of Red’s past…
Thankfully 🙏 her father (a cunning man) befriended a scholar/gentlemen whom he encouraged/persuaded to take his daughter in – just before he popped his clogs. With the exchange of an important document 📃 💥 but rather than give much away… trust me when I tell you to read it… especially if you like the classics.
The trials & tribulations Red goes through are both v.traumatic & exciting 🎆 all at once. She’s spirited & firey 🔥 & determined. The perfect protagonist.
An intricate plot with unexpected twists & turns. Characters are colourful, conflicted, troubled, flawed & magnificently human…
I’d def recommend it.

A story addressing intense concepts, written with such a calm tone 🧘♀️
All which is contrary to the ordinary course of nature makes this novel so gripping.
Klara is our protagonist – an “artificial friend” programmed for teenagers. She observes humans (initially) from her shop window 🪟 🤖 until she is purchased by The Mother to be a companion for a young sickly girl called Josie; Josie’s illness is chronic & never named; arguably strikingly similar to #mecfs – a horrific life-limiting “exhaustion” which doesn’t give Josie much, if any, relief…
In the novel the illness is supposedly triggered by something called “lifting.” Lifting is an artificial gene 🧬 editing; a fictional process which the kids are put through to make them “smarter.” This comes with certain risks, such as death & “living death” ☠️ aka #chronicillness
There’s a “coming of age” love-story between Josie & the boy next door 🚪 called Rick; he’s one of the few teens who hasn’t been “lifted.”
The fact Rick hasn’t undergone the lifting process puts a dampener on their potential future together; Rick is not allowed to attend the same college(s) as the “lifted.” Josie & Rick are navigating this.
The Mother has lost her eldest daughter & is naturally protective over Josie; so much so that she considers the idea of Klara “continuing” as Josie, if Josie were to die…
This is a really interesting topic which I’d have liked to read more on.
It’s a strong theme within the story but isn’t necessarily the main idea 💡 Identity, Healing ❤️🩹 & Human Nature are the core elements, I’d say.
The Sun plays an integral role as it directly charges Klara’s batteries 🔋 ☀️
I personally read the sun to be “hope.” ⛅️ god-like & eventually miraculous ❤️🩹 perhaps far-fetched – but poetic, symbolic – beautiful & uplifting.
The story delves deeper than my review can offer; have a read!
💥2nd book 📖 I’ve read by #elifshafak – Turkish/British novelist – once again, superbly executed ✍️ I recommend her as an author!
From 13th century bullies, religious teachers, drunks prostitutes & poets to 21st century housewives & a modern day teen battling bulimia, it’s a colourful & diverse patchwork 🎆 🎇
Each chapter is narrated by one of the aforementioned characters providing a broad insight!
The 21st century storyline is weaved in with the story of a 13th century “historic manuscript.” I’ve not really read anything like this before.
The contemporary narrative is centred around “unhappy” housewife Ella Rubenstein (40’s) who lives with her (cheating) husband & middle-class kids.
Ella works for literary agency, part-time, which is how she comes across a piece of writing ✍️ called “Sweet Blasphemy” by Aziz Z. A rather unexpected love story unfolds.
His work is reflective of the friendship in 13th Century Konya, Turkey, between Rumi & Shams – true story.
I learnt a lot about how love, peace ✌️ & spirituality are encoded in Islam ☪️ Spirituality, God, the power of Love & transformation… what’s not to like?
Well, there’s also the concept of religion causing violence, division & murder.
As more of an intellectual than a hopeless romantic 💘 I tend to use my brain 🧠 over my heart ❤️ to make most of my life decisions 😂 so the mother, Ella, walking out on her family, the way she did, certainly didn’t sit right with me – at all 👀 💩
But, equally there were some profound & beautiful moments ruled by the heart 💜 & beautifully written paragraphs which truly made me feel #compassion #empathy
The momentum towards the end was particularly impressive. I continually cared about what happened next 💫

A lot of people say to me re my situation how can we help? I reply with things like bake for @bake4mecfs 😊 and if you know anyone with #chronicillness just be there in what ever capacity you’re able to. It will be appreciated.
But may also depend somewhat on the ability they have to enable contact.
Remember #severeme is so brutal, maintaining friendships can be extraordinarily implausible for the person suffering. Even “mild” to moderate ME/CFS is extremely limiting.
Be kind. Be patient.
Raise awareness for their cause 💙 and perhaps offer services for the family who are often also affected? @smileforme is one of my favourite 🤩 charities because they send out gifts 🎁 to #mecfswarriors & their carers too ♥️

Some of us with illnesses from the list on the @bake4mecfs website are so desperately unwell that we are just getting through the minutes – while others are able to do a little or quite a bit more… we are all still in a very difficult predicament to say the least. A “quirky” coming-of-age, slow-burning love story… slash historical murder mystery? With a weirdly wicked wit. Heavy material presented in a lighthearted manner. Loved it! 💥
The abuse (physical, mental & sexual) make it a bit haunting (at times) to read – but the author 🖊️ utilises an “off-beat” yet consistent humour, so you don’t get too “caught up” in the darker spots; skilful with out negating the seriousness of the aforementioned ⬆️
Occasional parts of the plot a bit patchy?? BUT I confess I read at “full speed” cos I was addicted to the style of the storytelling, so perhaps I just needed to slow down 🤔 I literally burnt through this 🏍️ 💫
Lead protagonist, Alex, is very, very likeable. She has mental health problems #skitsophrenia #paranoia – battling daily to decipher what’s real & what’s not…
A magic 8 ball & her handy camera 📸 supposedly help her make decisions. But neither can prove IF the little boy she met at the lobster 🦞 tank (as a kid) is the same teen (Miles) who has her heart ♥️ skip a beat at her new school. Spoiler alert… he is! #love #romancebooks
NB – Alex actually set free the lobsters 🦞 FREE in the store as a small child 😂 😭 🙌 – or did she?
Obviously, all somewhat “sensationalised” to make it an exciting read. But, I didn’t mind that all.
Alex’s starting at a new school 🏫 while attempting to hide 😶🌫️ her differences from peers. Friendship & loyalty become strong 💪 concepts in this story, as does bullying.
Miles, the “eventual” love interest, is a young man navigating the world with undiagnosed mild autism? The two go together extraordinarily well. A decent range of complex characters & relationships throughout, but theirs is the soul of the book 📖
I’m not going to give away the story because there are twists & turns I want you to experience.
Stereotypical highschool students such as the nerd, cheerleader, jock ect are present; though “done a million times before,” this is a unique piece of literature executed in a way I really enjoyed reading #bookrecommendations

I am not able to get out half as much as used too, but when I can it’s a real blessing to wear the #sunflowerlanyard which indicates I have a disability. Sometimes I need to sit (or lay down) and often I need to elevate my legs. By wearing this 🌻 people understand I might need some assistance 😊 and/or the symbol stops a person from approaching to try to prevent me from putting my feet up on an extra chair 🪑 💥 which is nice 👌

I read recently the sunflower is not regarded as a single flower but a bunch of flowers! I think that is a beautiful concept for us all coming together to stand strong 💪
