On October 14, Australia has the opportunity to take a step towards a better future for First Nations Peoples. The nation’s leading health organisations have come together to highlight the practical difference a Voice to Parliament could make. Beyond Blue, the national depression and anxiety initiative which I chair, wholeheartedly supports a Voice to Parliament because it has the potential to improve health outcomes. A Voice also promotes social and emotional wellbeing through self-determination. Because we all do better and we all feel better when we have a say in how we live our lives. #yes23 #alliesforuluru @ulurustatement No matter how you vote, Beyond Blue is here to support you: follow the link in my bio on how to access support. Alternatively, you can call 13YARN to talk with an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Crisis Supporter.

One of the many things I love about @beyondblueofficial signature fundraiser, Big Blue Table, is that it brings people together and gets them talking about topics they perhaps might not otherwise discuss, such as mental health. Participants receive a host kit that includes a range of “conversation-starter” cards, which offer prompts such as: What made you smile recently? Who do you turn to for advice? Share a trait you love about yourself. As Beyond Blue Chair, I’m excited to support this year’s Big Blue Table, whose ambassadors include Australia’s first Masterchef, @_juliegoodwin, former Bachelor @drmattagnew and comedian/chef @nats_what_i_reckon. Proceeds go to the Beyond Blue Support Service, which supports more than 300,000 people every year. The service is funded entirely by donations, so every dollar counts. It was a thorough pleasure to return to the University of Adelaide for this year’s Julia Gillard Public Lecture. We discussed the recently released Royal Commission into Early Childhood Education and Care. The University of Adelaide is already undertaking groundbreaking research on early childhood development, through its BetterStart research program. I thank BetterStart researcher Dr Rhiannon Pilkington for joining me on stage to discuss her important work, and to BetterStart PhD Candidate Anna Kalamkarian for delivering a vote of thanks. It’s exciting to see the work already underway, as well as the enormous opportunities to expand our knowledge about how to give children the best possible start in life.

It was an honour to join Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar in Canberra last night to launch the Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women’s voices) Institute for First Nations Gender Justice, and so inspiring to meet with First Nations women who had travelled from all over Australia to take part in this historic event. June has led the Wiyi Yani U Thangani project at the Human Rights Commission for more than seven years, and now as her term as Social Justice Commissioner comes to an end, the new Institute will ensure that her vital work is carried forward. The Institute, based at the Australian National University, will take a First Nations gender lens to pivotal issues ranging from housing and education to environmental conservation and economic engagement. For far too long, the voices of First Nations women have not truly been heard. We know this needs to change if their lives and outcomes are to be improved, and that is incumbent upon all of us. I’m looking forward to seeing the research and initiatives that come out of the institute to help guide policies that achieve First Nations gender equality. 📸 @tamati_the_yamaji

“We start 2024 knowing that last year, Wellcome’s charitable spend grew to £1.7 billion. We’ve been able to provide support at scale for trials of what could be the first new TB vaccine in a century. We’ve seen our long-term commitment to discovery play a part in two incredible global child health success stories – against malaria and mitochondrial disease,” says Julia Gillard, Chair of Wellcome in our annual report. 2023 was the first year of a decade in which Wellcome plans to spend £16 billion supporting discovery research and science to solve the three key global health challenges of mental health, infectious disease and climate and health. We look ahead with great expectation at what will be achieved through the power of science. #Wellcome #WellcomeTrust

One of the things we often hear from people who contact Beyond Blue for support is they wish they’d reached out sooner. Problems that may seem small at the start, can sometimes snowball and reach crisis point. On this World Suicide Prevention Day, we’re urging anyone who is feeling not quite themselves to seek support at the earliest possible stage. The sooner you access support, the easier it can be to manage your mental health. New research, commissioned by Beyond Blue and conducted by the Social Research Centre, found that almost one in three Australians living with a mental health condition that impacts their quality of life say they’re unlikely to seek help from anyone. One in four think their problem is not serious enough to reach out. Our message is: don’t wait and don’t hesitate. There is help and there is hope. Beyond Blue is here for you no matter how big or small your experiences might seem. The Beyond Blue Support Service is available 24/7 on 1300 22 4636 or at beyondblue.org.au/get-support

As patron of @camfed I’m inspired by and proud of its unique model of financial, community and social support, which ensures vulnerable young girls can learn, thrive and become independent and influential. They, in turn, can support the next generation in school. On this International #DayOfTheGirl I encourage you to hear from girls in rural Africa about the power of social support networks in shaping their futures. Read more at the link in bio.

🎙️NEW PODCAST EPISODE! Turia Pitt is well known for her incredible determination and fighting spirit. She rebuilt her life after being severely burned in a grassfire in 2011. But in chatting to her for my latest podcast episode, I realised there’s so much more to her than that one story. She’s a devoted Mum, a successful business owner, a passionate advocate for women’s equality, and she’s also really funny. I highly recommend you take a listen at the link in bio.
