Julia Gillard Instagram – It was an honour to join Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner June Oscar in Canberra last night to launch the Wiyi Yani U Thangani (Women’s voices) Institute for First Nations Gender Justice, and so inspiring to meet with First Nations women who had travelled from all over Australia to take part in this historic event.
June has led the Wiyi Yani U Thangani project at the Human Rights Commission for more than seven years, and now as her term as Social Justice Commissioner comes to an end, the new Institute will ensure that her vital work is carried forward.
The Institute, based at the Australian National University, will take a First Nations gender lens to pivotal issues ranging from housing and education to environmental conservation and economic engagement.
For far too long, the voices of First Nations women have not truly been heard. We know this needs to change if their lives and outcomes are to be improved, and that is incumbent upon all of us.
I’m looking forward to seeing the research and initiatives that come out of the institute to help guide policies that achieve First Nations gender equality.
