Huge news!!! Today, The White House and U.S. Department of Transportation convened to take action on Protecting the Safety, Rights, and Dignity of Air Travelers with Disabilities, Attendees included; Secretary of Transportation Secretary @secretarypete, United States Senator for Illinois Senator @senduckworth, Senior Advisor to the President and Director of Public Engagement Steve Benjamin, Kelly Buckland, the Disability Policy Advisor at the Department of Transportation, and Disability Rights Advocates. The United States Department of Transportation has announced the issuance of a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on Ensuring Safe Accommodations for Air Travelers with Disabilities. In a nut shell they are proposing: 1. Mandate annual, hands-on training for airline staff and contractors who physically assist passengers and who handle passengers’ wheelchairs. 2. Allow passengers to choose the company that will repair or replace their wheelchair if it’s mishandled with the airline covering the costs. 3. Clarify that airlines must provide prompt, safe, and dignified assistance to all passengers with disabilities. 4. If airlines fall short of any of these standards or mishandle a passenger’s wheelchair, the proposal – if finalized – would make it easier for DOT to hold airlines accountable for failing passengers who use a wheelchair. The proposed rule also clarifies that damaging or delaying the return of a wheelchair is an automatic violation of the ACAA. Comments on the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking must be received within 60 days of the date it is published in the Federal Register. Comments can be filed on www.regulations.gov, docket number DOT-OST-2022-0144. @annaperngpa thank you SO much! #RightsOnFlights #JustPlaneWrong #KnowYourRights #DisabilityRights #AssistedAirTravelAct #ACA #DepartmentTransportation #USDOT #AccessibleAviation #AirForAll #PushingForwardAccess

Sophie and I often talk about how we both became disabled at such pivotal ages – 17 and 18, I gradually entered into the disabled community, through misdiagnosis, medical malpractice, a ridiculous amount of surgeries and so on, and for Sophie it happened instantly, her life changed forever in one unexpected moment. We both lost so much of our lives to hospital, recovering from surgeries, having more surgeries, recovering again, and the cycle continues. It has made us incredibly determined people, Those experiences and loosing all that time makes one realize that you never know when time may get taken away again. It is also a reminder that there are endless amounts of stories that are yet to be told and endless amounts of people who are yet to be heard. As Sophie said so well in this interview, “so much of what Hello Sunshine embody is so aligned with our values. If you were to supplant the word disabled in front of women, the narratives that they use to describe themselves are what we and Keely have always wanted to achieve for women and disabled people in general. It felt like there could not be a greater company for us to want to be partnered with and associated with. Everything that they create, and the way they want to broaden perspectives, is exactly what we want to do.” Couldn’t be more grateful and excited for this next chapter of the journey 💞💫 #RepresentationMatters #MakingSpace Image description: The Hollywood Reporter article by Abbey White; “How Hello Sunshine and Making Space Media’s Unscripted First-Look Deal Could Change Hollywood’s Disability Narratives Making Space co-founders Sophie Morgan and Keely Cat-Wells discuss why they teamed with Reese Witherspoon’s production company, the kinds of content they want their new deal to produce as well as how unscripted is key to reframing — and mainstreaming — disability onscreen”
If this is a dream, don’t pinch me! ☀️ Brainstorming with the BEST people! Being in a room with incredibly talented people plotting and planning, talking about new narratives, breaking barriers and all things disability representation with Hello Sunshine and my unbelievably talented friend and biz partner, Sophie Morgan, is truly a dream come true. Like so many people, I came out of hospital craving stories that included accurate, authentic and interesting disability / chronic illness narratives and representation, What an amazing opportunity we have to create change. I am so thrilled for this road ahead! Let’s go! @_making_space__ @_making_space_media #RepresentationMatters #MakingSpace Image description, a large group of team members, including Sophie Morgan & Keely at the Hello Sunshine HQ and in front of a large Hello Sunshine logo.

It’s TIME for change….! Today was an exciting day making moves and making space. Sophie and I are two incredibly impatient people, a blessing and a curse… I am currently re-reading Judy Heumanns book and am comforted by her quote, “Change never happens at the pace we think it should. It happens over years of people joining together, strategizing, sharing, and pulling all the levers they possibly can. Gradually, excruciatingly slowly, things start to happen, and then suddenly, seemingly out of the blue, something will tip.” @_making_space__ @sophlmorg #DisabilityRights #MakingSpace Image description: A series of pictures of Sophie & Keely at the Time offices posing in a large mirror that replicates the TIME magazine. What an absolute honour to have shared space with so many incredible activists, advocates, diplomats, politicians, CEOs, grassroots organisers, presidents, philanthropists and leaders, all of whom I greatly admire. being a Storyteller in Residence at the Clinton Gobal Initiative was a very special experience, As I told my story on stage today I only scratched the surface talking about the challenges I faced (and still face) going through years misdiagnosis, medical malpractice and trauma, and the challenges living with hidden, chronic disabilities, Challenges that many can relate to, and many of us don’t speak about. There is a unique aspect to living with conditions so underresearched, disrespected and unknown that adds an extra layer to the complexity for both ourselves and the people around us, We have to keep sharing our stories, listening to the stories of others and ensure that we change the narrative. Thank you SO much @rebelgirls and @annabellesbookclubla for collaborating with @_making_space__ and I on this very special event, What an amazing final celebration and gathering to commemorate Disability Pride Month! As we know there are not enough brands that prioritise disability pride month, so thank you for taking the opportunity to provide a platform for disabled voices. There’s nothing I love more than listening and learning from this amazing community and having conversations with young people who want to see a world that is equitable, safe and just for everyone. When we are given access to platforms, funding and meaningful support – we can accelerate positive change. As I write this, on a very low spoon count, I am reminded that it is OK to be proud of being Disabled but still have complicated relationship with our medical conditions. A massive, special thank you also to @probonoasl and @stephbohn, Lucy & Sadie, As well as @imtiffanyyu @charleyroyall @mariealyse_ @miraclepelayoofficial @lovingmydots @marisahamamoto @elisa.richards @theatouchton @verityvandams @dorayucas and so many others for your support. #RepresentationMatters #ChronicIllness #Ostomy #Spoonie #DisabilityPride #DisabilityRights Image description, 1) A young girl smiles holding a Rebel Girls book and Keely is seated in a Annabelles Book Club directors chair holding a pen 2) Annabelle, Keely and Lucy stand in front of a very colourful bookshelf 3) Lucy and Keely are seated in Annabelles book club directors chairs speaking to an audience.
