Lauren Tom Instagram – This is a look back at my early days as a dancer, and a post to honor my dance teachers who mentored me into a career as a performer. Dancing was a perfect art form for me when I was young because I was extremely shy but could still express myself without having to talk! My teachers were like beacons of hope and inspired me deeply. Slide 5 is a portrait of my first dance teacher, Margot Grimmer. I was 13 when I met Margot and I was in awe of her beauty and talent. Even though jazz and modern were my favorite styles she insisted I ground my technique in ballet as a foundation. I was eventually invited to perform with her American Dance Company and these are some photos from that time. Margot wrote a memoir about her life in dance and I highly recommend reading it if you want to be inspired! She features me in the book and I am so honored that she chose to include me. The next slide is of two influential teachers that I also studied with, Gus Giordano, and Lou Conte. Gus was known for his immense kindness and had an amazing, unique, jazz style that was instantly recognizable. His studio is still thriving in Chicago. Lou Conte also had a very specific style and brilliance, and I was incredibly lucky to study with him. I’m proud to say I was the swing dancer in the first company of Hubbard Street Dance Company. I got to see them perform in LA recently, and they took my breath away! The next slide is a shout out to Baayork Lee, who is the force of nature that originated the role of Connie Wong in A Chorus Line. Baayork was truly a pioneer, as roles for Asian performers were virtually nonexistent. Playing Connie on Broadway was a dream come true for me. Baayork continues to inspire and mentor countless dancers today. And the last slide is my current teacher at the YMCA, Will Hemingway. I can’t perform any of those moves from decades ago, but I can get down and boogie with Will in his water dance classes twice a week! These classes make me feel like a kid again, I grin from ear to ear. Lauren Tom Instagram – Many thanks to @aarp for hosting the most beautiful luncheon at @crustaceanbh to honor #thejoyluckclub for paving the way for future #asian films and #actors in the industry. The love and respect in that room was palpable—the younger generation showing appreciation for the perseverance and courage of those who came before them, and the older generation cheering on and standing in awe of the younger generation’s talent and activism. I was surrounded by so many of my loved ones—my husband, mom, brother, one son, (the other one is at college!) my manager, and so many friends, that it was almost surreal like the show, “This is your life”. (I’m dating myself!😂) @lisalingstagram did a fantastic job moderating a panel with @thetamlyntomita @lisaluofficial @thekieuchinh @mingna_wen (who was on zoom) @janetyangofficial and me. We missed @chao_time who was unable to make it. 🥲 The food was delicious and the lychee martinis were amazing! In a time when the world is just about as crazy as it can be, I think everyone there felt uplifted with a sense of community, belonging, and support. ❤️ #sograteful
