Whew! 2023 has been a blast. We rang in my 70th birthday playing a show in Belfast and celebrated with a surprise party back in the states with my friends. @americanafest “pre-Grammy salute” (which I was so excited to tune in via livestream as I was under the weather… but an honor, nonetheless!) My memoir was released in April and hit the NYT bestseller list 🥲 Stories From a Rock N Roll Heart came out this summer ❤️🔥 and I am overwhelmed with the outpouring of love it’s been receiving. We toured with our new friends @bigthiefmusic and had a blast when we got to share the stage Forbes included me in their 50 over 50 😅 Played guitar on stage at @theryman for the first time since my stroke in 2020 🙌🎸 Car Wheels hit its 25th anniversary and we had a great time at the tribute at @thebasementeast And this was the year we introduced our new concert formatting for “Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets” tour, where we incorporate more storytelling and visuals along with the songs. All in all, 2023 was an exciting year full of rock n roll throughout Australia, Mexico, Europe (twice) and all around the United States adding up to 200 days on the road. WHERE THE SONG WILL FIND ME. A song about how songs happen-the magic and alchemy about where they come from. Lucinda refers to it as “being wide open to the muse,” being on the receiving end when the song decides be born. This was one of the first songs we tried in the studio after Lucinda was able to return. We didn’t even try to record another version of this one- her vocal on this is one of her all time best, so we never even considered trying it again. It so perfectly captures the tone and feel of what the lyrics are about. “Sitting on a stool In the corner of a bar The errand of a fool Has carried me this far To a place where the song can find me To a place where the song can find me”
NEVER GONNA FADE AWAY. Many people have assumed that this song was written after the stroke and is a response to that adversity. This one was written well before that, but certainly resonates on a far deeper level after the fact. It’s a statement of rebellion against the dying of the light, as Dylan Thomas said. This was also was recorded in the first sessions in the studio around the same time as Where The Song Will Find Me -it was also never attempted again and is the perfect final song for this special record. “When nothing’s ever enough And I can feel it in my gut And things are just a little too much And I feel like I’m losing touch I’m never gonna fade away”
