When we were growing up, in Delhi, my mother was one of the few women of her generation, who could drive. An Omni, no less! Talk about soccer mom, eh?! This is back when every time we saw a woman driving, we would scream excitedly, “Look that’s also a woman driving!”. (Somewhat like how people react seeing women riding bikes now). She did her masters after marriage, with immense support from her partner, our Dad. She didn’t know how to cook, neither did Papa, when they got married. They both learnt together. She played table tennis at state level & basketball at district level. She wore jeans & bellbottoms. She had long lustrous hair but got them cut short when they became too tough to manage. And has had the same style for years now! 🤦🏽♀️ She’s worked our whole life. She was always doing something extra, in her after school hours. Not because she had to but because she wanted to. She did radio shows, organised cultural events, sports days, she was part of library clubs, arranged focus groups for market research and she continues to keep herself busy. Now, more so than ever. She still throws the best parties. She has always been proud of her two daughters. Although they (her & Papa) had to face questions like “Oh toh beta nahi hai? Chalo, koi nahi.”, “Ek aur bacche ke liye try karlo, shayad ladka ho jaaye.” They didn’t, obviously. She also NEVER said things like how she’s going to raise her daughters like sons. She hated it then & she hates it now. She is proud of how they raised us. Like girls. Like strong, independent, kind, intelligent, educated, empathetic girls. Just like herself. Happy #internationalwomensday Mumma & Papa. And Herath Mubarak. 🧿🙏🏽
This pic is from our visit to the Trimbakeshwar temple last year. Seemed apt for #mahashivratri & womens day celebrations.
“Despite evidence to the contrary, it is not an inevitability that we should be our worst selves behind the mask of an avatar. What I believe to my very core, is that virtual worlds can be better than our actual world. They can be more moral, more just, more progressive, more empathetic and more accommodating of difference. And if they can be, shouldn’t they be?”~ #tomorrowandtomorrowandtomorrow
You see it in the water. You see it in the light. You see it everywhere, if you know where to look.
