Melissa O’Neil Instagram – Debra Byrd was/is an incredible vocalist and her artistry and talent brought her into the lives of MANY an ‘idol’ hopeful – which is how I was lucky enough to meet her. Her mentorship, guidance and kindness touched so many of us. I know that it is because of her direct guidance that I fell onto the path I did.

After falling into the ‘bottom two’ the first two weeks, we were workshopping the third week song. She looked at me pointedly and with eyes that communicated so much more than words (and rules) would permit – “you sure you like this song?” I took her cue and things were different after that and we got to hang out for a little while longer…

Feeling Byrd be proud of you meant eveything. It was like jet fuel, a precious jewel, a juicy juicy hug – all rolled into one. Watching how she was with the band, how she was with the crew, how she spoke to each one of us. It’s the kind of education you can only hope and pray to have the opportunity to pay for.

Her precise, gentle, heart-filled advice and care was incredibly formative for me at 17.

It’s strange and sad how swiftly time moves – how fleeting life is.

Thank you, Debra Byrd for your incredible gifts in voice and heart that you shared so generously and freely with all of us. Thank you for teaching me. Love you very much.
