Honouring these two beautiful men on the darkest of days. Forever in our hearts Jesse Baird and Luke Davies. This devastating news was delivered through a trembling voice moments after the allegations were made by police. My thoughts are with Jesse and Luke’s families and their friends and colleagues at Channel 10, the AFL and Qantas. Our hearts are broken.
Should police march? Mardi Gras is meeting about this today.
The accusation the LGBTQIA community was not being inclusive by excluding police, placed the onus of inclusion in the wrong place. Some spaces intentionally exclude those who have perpetrated abuses in order to keep those who have suffered safe. Surely real inclusivity is acknowledging lived experience to protect our most vulnerable. The queer community doesn’t have to prove police are worthy of inclusion. Police have to prove it themselves. Organisations have to show they are inclusive, safe spaces before they can march under the rainbow. Whether marching in uniform or not, the onus is on NSW Police to demonstrate their remorse, deep reflection and systemic change so we can all feel included in their protection and community service.
One incredible year of loving and being loved by you ✨❤️✨
My precious is 29!! Watching Jade blossom year in year out is my greatest joy. This year @jdpenangke had many new experiences. An art residency in Sweden where she learned glass blowing (most of her prized pieces made it home intact). Saw the sights of Paris. Was inducted by her old high school as a Lawley Legend! Had her first ever solo art exhibition. Some loves for @captain.underpants__ only grow deeper. Like games, crabbing, Muay Thai, good food and sharing culture through art. Whatever 29 brings, I’m here for it! Mummy loves you very much ❤️

“In recent days many have voiced their concerns to us, particularly regarding feelings of unease at the Parade. Their concerns centre on whether it can still be a space to protest, celebrate, and advocate for equality, as well as to honour and grieve for those we’ve lost, given the NSW Police’s participation in this year’s event. Our community needs space to grieve the loss of Jesse and Luke who, before this tragedy, would have been here celebrating with us at the Festival. In light of this, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Board feels that having the NSW Police march this year could add to the distress within our communities, already deeply affected by recent events. The Board has taken the decision to request that the Police do not march in the 2024 Parade. This decision was not made lightly, especially considering that many NSW Police members who participate in the Parade are also members of the LGBTQIA community and are navigating the impact of this tragedy alongside us. However, we believe that their participation at this year’s event could intensify the current feelings of sorrow and distress. This decision allows space for the community to heal this year and acknowledges the profound grief and strain that we are enduring. This is an opportunity to pause and reflect. NSW Police have been notified, and while disappointed, understand the Board’s decision and the Board are meeting with the Police to discuss further. Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras have worked closely on our event operations with NSW Police over many years, building greater understanding behind the scenes to serve the broader community. Through this, we have developed a constructive relationship that has helped us progress towards a more reconciled future between NSW Police and the LGBTQIA community.” Mardi Gras Board

During a week of grief and heartbreak, this podcast shone some light through the darkness. I’ve loved @kweenkongofficial since I watched her on @rupaulsdragrace but after this chat with @frankellyabc for Yours Queerly I’m head over heels in love. I hope it fills your heart as it did mine. 🎙️ Yours Queerly @abclisten or where ever you get your podcasts.

Julian Assange’s last ditch bid to avoid extradition to the US begins soon in the UK High Court.
I’ve just learned the phrase “glass cliff” as 2 women at the top leave their jobs and 1 enters. Glass cliff – a situation in which women are promoted to higher positions during times of crisis. I spoke with @tanyaplibersek about the challenges of being a woman at the top, especially for those who are first.
