Mauna Kea needs your help please submit testimony today to the University of California Board of Regents ACADEMIC AND STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE. They will be holding a meeting on March 20th to discuss TMT and Mauna Kea and the “progress” made with the Hawaiian community with the help of their Keck Director.
Suggested testimony (say in own words):
Aloha.
Please divest from TMT.
TMT will never be built on Mauna Kea.
We DO NOT CONSENT.
We are just as prepared to stop TMT in 2024, 2026 or any other time as we were in 2019, 2015, 2014 and every other time. Mauna Kea is sacred and we will defend it. Period.
There is no “just and shared solution to the role of astronomy in Hawaii” that includes TMT.
NO FURTHER DEVELOPMENT of Mauna Kea is possible. Now or ever.
UC needs to respect Indigenous Peoples of Hawaii and all the lands it sits upon.
UC should divest from this telescope entirely. Use the money to take care of its own people. Forget competitive science, and refocus on real learning and knowledge that does not require destruction of the Earth.
