Per a new NSF report, a path forward for the TMT has opened…but with competition. Under the new NSF review process, the organization will only fund ONE extremely large telescope project; either the TMT or the Giant Magellan Telescope in Chile. The organization and U.S Congress will make their decision on which project to move forward with in May of 2024.
In light of these new developments, we must continually highlight the reasons why the TMT should NEVER be built on Mauna Kea, especially in light of alternatives like the GMT project. In addition, there is much work to be done to keep scientific personnel honest about their commitments to repair broken relationships with the Hawaiian community and create spaces where Indigenous Scientific Knowledge and Spiritual Practices are honored and respected.
