On the first day of Ramadan, I got the news that my Sity Muftieh transitioned. I feel like a part of me died too. She said she would wait for me a few years ago. She wanted me to come to Beit Ur El Foka and pick figs from the fig trees surrounding her modest home. She loved her farm (especially her chickens) with olive trees everywhere you looked. Sity loved helping other people who would stop by for water, tea or a bite to eat.
She was Palestine for me. Everything I love about Palestinians and being Palestinian myself she contained in her. She was tiny but had the biggest and kindest heart. The first photo was taken after I won my first congressional election in 2018. She wore her best Palestinian thobe and was full of pride. The video was from my last election where she did the traditional zagharit to display joy.
Sity and the family see me as their bird flying free while they are caged under oppression and violence. It brings me to tears knowing she never saw a Free Palestine, but I know her spirit streams through the leaves of her olive and fig trees while her body forever will be in Palestine.
Allah Yerhama 🙏🏽

It would take 800,000 streams for an artist to make the equivalent of $15/hour. It would take 1,000 streams to buy a cup of coffee.
Currently, musicians make tiny fractions of a penny per stream, while streaming has grown to represent 84% of recorded music industry revenue in the U.S.
The Living Wage for Musicians Act would transform the industry and finally help the artists.
Join our movement to rid the Democratic Party of Republican extremism: RejectAIPAC.org
Over 75% of Democratic voters support an immediate and permanent ceasefire now. So why aren’t 75% of Democrats in Congress doing the same?
Because AIPAC & their GOP donors bought their silence. No more silence in the face of Israeli atrocities. #RejectAIPAC and ceasefire NOW!
Democratic voters across every demographic group support a ceasefire. The only reason Democratic leaders don’t is because they’re scared of AIPAC.
If we want an immediate and permanent ceasefire, we must #RejectAIPAC from the Democratic Party and give voters their voice back.
Ramadan is a time for community, care, connection, for self-reflection, mindfulness, renewal, and recharging.
It should be a time of joy as well, and a time to honor our shared humanity. This year, Muslims around the world are navigating heavy grief.
As we begin Ramadan, may we remember that each one of us is sacred.
Regardless of background, may all of us seek strength to sustain ourselves and continue demanding human dignity, justice, and freedom around the world.
From my family to yours, wishing all my Muslim sisters and brothers a peaceful Ramadan full of family, faith and giving.
#RamadanKareem2024
Standing up for the basic dignity & lives of Palestinians comes at the cost of a $100 million threat from AIPAC & it’s GOP-funded Super PAC.
This is the same PAC that endorsed over 200 anti-abortion Republican extremists who want to see abortion bans passed across the country.
9 of the 10 top megadonors to AIPAC’s Super PAC were Donald Trump’s donors and Republican billionaires.
They’re bankrolling right-wing challengers to the Squad & dividing our communities, but we’re uniting to #RejectAIPAC once and for all.

Having one of our community mothers be my guest at the State of the Union was a such an honor. As a former educator, Mother Patricia Braxton, wasn’t shy in schooling anyone she met. Having a bit of Detroit with me yesterday is what I needed. Love you Mama Patt! ❤️

We have the right to breathe clean air!
So proud of the Schoolcraft Improvement Association and all the residents who have been organizing to fight for clean air and protection of their public health.
The concrete company received 300 city violations in two years! It’s time they are shut down. If they can’t comply with the law, then they shouldn’t be able to operate in our neighborhood.
