Today, my #WCW is Imari Walker (@calimari93), a.k.a. Microplastics Bae. Imari is an Analytical Chemist, Environmental Engineer, Oceanographer, @NSBE Mentor and Science Communications Youtuber.
Imari’s travels influenced her concerns for the future of clean accessible water, and in May 2016 she graduated from @UCBerkeleyOfficial with a Bachelors in #MarineScience. She is currently a environmental engineering doctoral student at @DukeUniversity in the Ferguson Lab Group studying the fate, occurrence and transformation of plastic additives within aqueous environments.
Imari’s YouTube channel is for those curious about our continuous exposure to microplastics -the materials that stay in the environment for a long time after plastics disintegrate – and chemicals. She explores topics including: the effects of microplastic pollution in our environment to the harmful chemicals in personal care products. She also reviews commonly used products along with safer alternatives and discusses how we can lead a better lifestyle for ourselves and the environment. Her channel is geared to a broad range of ages and knowledge levels and she also dedicates part of the channel to helping students get into higher education and succeed.

This week my #WCW highlights Cecilia Rouse. Cecilia is a well-known labor economist, former @WhiteHouse economic adviser under both the Clinton and Obama administration, and current dean of the @Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.
After being encouraged by her mother, to take an economics course as a freshman in college, which came during a national spike in unemployment, Cecilia found herself drawn to study the labor market in all of its dimensions, and “the ways we can tear down barriers to job growth and make it easier for people to find long-lasting economic security.”
Cecilia is now nominated by President elect Biden to chair the Council of Economic Advisers. As a part of the transition team, Cecilia, will make history as the first Black chair of the council, taking position during a sagging recovery from a pandemic recession, when millions of Americans have been out of work since the virus first surged through the United States. A leading expert on core labor market issues as well as those in the field of education, economic policy has been the avenue through which Rouse has worked to make a difference.
[The pandemic] is a “devastating crisis, but also an opportunity to build a better economy in its wake — an economy that works for everyone, brings fulfilling job opportunities, and leaves no one to fall through the cracks.”
My #WCW for this today is Elizabeth Wanjiru Wathuti (@lizwathuti) a Kenyan environmentalist, climate activist and founder of the Green Generation Initiative (@GGI_kenya), an organization that aims to nurture young environmental enthusiasts through practical environmental education, food forests establishment and tree growing. They have planted over 30,000 trees since 2016!
She is also a recipient of the @Wangari_Maathai Scholarship award for her outstanding passion and commitment to #environmental #conservation which dates back to her childhood (she planted her first tree when she was seven), and a 2019 Regional Finalist for Africa for the UN Young Champions of the Earth Prize 2019.
Add to that she’s an award-winning environmental blogger, and recently graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in #EnvironmentalStudies and Community Development. All of this AND more all at the age of 23-years old! Elizabeth is a change-maker and we know this is only the beginning.
