We’re worried about him taking down PEOPLE. ✊🏽💁🏽♀️ #blackhistory I am honored that General Petty, the first woman assistant adjutant general of the Virgin Islands National Guard and only the second to rise to the rank of brigadier general in the guard’s 50-year existence, will join me as my guest at President Biden’s State of the Union address tonight! General Petty follows other great women in the Virgin Islands who have served in our military – Ruby Rouss, one of the first aide-de-camps of General Dwight Eisenhower during World War II, Caroline Fawkes, the first woman to fly the C-23B Sherpa military transport aircraft and Debra Howell, the V.I. National Guard’s former Territorial Adjutant General. General Petty also boasts 18 years as an educator and 15 plus years as a school administrator. This past year has been a special year in our Virgin Island National Guard, celebrating 50 years of service to our nation! Trailblazing women such as General Petty are breaking through the glass ceiling and inspiring future generations in the Virgin Islands. It’s only fitting that during Virgin Islands History Month and Women’s History Month, I have her accompany me as my special guest for the State of the Union address! #2024SOTU #VIHistoryMonth #BreakingThroughBarriers Ramadan is a sacred time of reflection, fasting and prayer. I hope all the families and communities that come together this month have a meaningful celebration. #RamadanMubarak We stand on the shoulders of strong Virgin Islanders who came before us, a people who are known for their courage, leadership, sacrifice, and, most importantly, their resilience. The Virgin Islands are known for so much more than just white sandy beaches and as a popular vacation destination. There is a reason why seven nations have fought, bought, and done what was necessary to attempt to own these beautiful islands. We are made of culture-rich lands and a diverse history. Though not always pretty, there is great beauty in our past that shaped our present and directs us toward our future. Happy Virgin Islands 🇻🇮 History Month! Today’s meeting at the U.S. State Department with Governor Bryan, his team and Daniel Ricchetti, Deputy Special Representative for City and State Diplomacy. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting with Richard Muhammad, the US Virgin Islands PTSA Legislative Chairman, during his visit to Capitol Hill. We discussed the PTA’s education priorities: family engagement, federal investment, gun safety and violence prevention, child nutrition, and school infrastructure. Thank you for your visit, Mr. Muhammad! This week heralds Virgin Islands History Month – it is the beginning of a month-long celebration in the Virgin Islands of our history. My presence in Congress is built upon the indomitable spirit of Virgin Islanders whose legacies are woven into the very fabric of our culture—marked by their bravery, visionary leadership, and profound sacrifices. Our history is one not just defined by the actions of a select few, but a legacy that elevates the collective greatness of all Virgin Islanders! Above all else, it is the story of our people, whose quest for self-determination has been a chronicle of epic feats. Although, we still face hardships, such as our continued battle to attain the fundamental and constitutional rights denied by the Insular Cases—rights afforded to all Americans except those that live in US territories–we are in the era that will be the catalyst to spur on the next revolution. To stop now, even for a moment, would be sacrilege to the countless sacrifices and bloodshed of our ancestors. We mustn’t take for granted the gifts that have given us through their bloodshed. We must fight on for full equality, self-determination and our own liberation. Blessed Virgin Islands History Month! #VirginIslandsHistoryMonth #QuestforSelfDetermination Last weekend, my team and I had the opportunity to host a group of local and national stakeholders in the agricultural space for a roundtable discussion on St. Thomas, as well as participate in numerous farm tours. Stay connected with us each weekday for the next features!! #VirginIslandsHistoryMonth In December of 2022, President Biden signed into law my bill (H.R. 7496) to direct the Secretary of the Interior to install a plaque at the peak of the Ram Head trail on St. John to commemorate the 1733 St. John slave rebellion. As we begin V.I. History Month, my office will make our annual pilgrimage to hike the trail to Ram Head. While our ancestors fight for freedom and self-determination in the Americas was long standing and throughout the Caribbean, the area of Ram Head holds great significance as a marker of the enslaved’s rebellion in 1733, which was one of the earliest and longest lasting in the Americas. During the rebellion, numerous revolutionaries gave their lives in the vicinity of the peak of Ram Head rather than allowing themselves to be recaptured. This coming Sunday, March 3rd, 2024 at 10 am (AST), my team and I will host a brief ceremony on St. John at Salt Pond, which will be followed by a hike of the Ram Head trail and the official unveiling of the plaque. You are cordially invited to join us for the ceremony and the hike afterwards. If participating in the hike, please dress accordingly. Light drinks and refreshments will be provided. If you would like more information about this event or need general assistance, please feel free to reach out to our offices at 340-778-5900 or 340-774-4408. Hope to see you there!
