We’re mentally rollin’, rollin’ #Fantasia’s tribute to #TinaTurner at the #GRAMMYs! ✨
Sunday night we saw the 66th Grammy Awards pay tribute to the “goddess of rock ‘n’ roll, with a high-energy performance of Tina Turner’s ‘Proud Mary’. And who better to bring this timeless tune to the stage than Fantasia Barrino? We remember Tina Turner at the Grammys and her legacy throughout music that will always live on.
Proud Mary was written by John Fogerty for Creedance Clearwater Revival. The song portrays a new life available on the river, the promise of like-minded camaraderie and the chance for rebirth as an individuals whose life exists on the ever-moving river. The universe works in mysterious ways and while the song wasn’t initially written for Tina, in hindsight it’s almost as if this song was foreshadowing what’s to come for this Rock legend.
Tina Turner performing Proud Mary in 1971. In the spoken introduction of the hit song she promises her audience to first take things “nice and easy” but then promises the ending will be “rough”. Tina made sure to deliver on this promise every time she took the stage to perform this song. In Tina’s own words: “This is the way we do Proud Mary”.

In the Eighties, there were no women who sang and danced like Tina, women who could be sexy without making it sexual. And how many women can hold up their end of the stage with Mick Jagger? The first time they met was in 1966, when Ike and Tina played the Royal Albert Hall with the Stones – a terrifying experience, given that the place was packed with 5,000 of their fans. Later, Mick showed up at the dressing room Tina shared with their dancers and said in his unmistakable voice: ‘I like how you girls dance.’ Tina had seen him strutting on stage with his tambourine and thought he looked a little awkward. So she pulled him in and taught him how to do the Pony, her signature prancing footwork. Mick and Tina developed a wonderful friendship over the years.
