Caption : #REPOST @lostcanyonsla . “It really was a perfect moment, that Laurel Canyon period. Carole lived up there, Joni and I lived in her house there for the better part of a year. The record companies were relatively benign and there were people in them who cared about the music and the artists – it hadn’t become a corporate monolith yet. There was a sense of there being a community: myself, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Crosby, Stills and Nash. David Geffen was in the mix a lot. Linda Ronstadt, Peter Asher, Harry Nilsson. You know, it was pretty much what they say. Things really worked well.” – James Taylor, seen here with Carole King in 1971. 📷 Michael Webb/Keystone/Getty Images #jamestaylor #caroleking #jonimitchell #jacksonbrowne #crosbystillsandnash #lindaronstadt #harrynilsson #davidgeffen #laurelcanyonLikes : 15172

Caption : On This Day 1971 (February 10, 1971) Carole King releases her seminal album Tapestry. The album cover features the barefoot, 29-year-old singer sitting on a window sill in the living room of her Laurel Canyon home while her cat, Telemachus, peers into the camera. King holds a needlepoint tapestry she’s recently finished, which gave her the idea for the title track and inspired the album’s concept. Before the release of Tapestry, most were unfamiliar with Carole King, at least by name, but they certainly knew her work. During the previous decade, King and her then-husband Gerry Goffin were Brill Building scribes (via Aldon Music) who churned out enduring hits like “The Loco-Motion,” “One Fine Day,” “I’m Into Something Good” and the Aretha Franklin anthem “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman.” King identified as a songwriter and only performed as a means to share her songs – plus she had stage fright. After her close friend James Taylor encouraged her to pursue a singing career, she recorded her debut album, Writer. But it’s Tapestry that brings her, and the singer-songwriter genre, to the heights of fame. #CaroleKing #Tapestry Via: @ucoofficial @rockhistationLikes : 8904

Caption : Raise your hand if you’ve ever related to the lyrics of “It’s Too Late.” Though people often mistakenly attribute the lyrics to me, they were written by Toni Stern. It was more than a half century ago when she handed them to me, typewritten, on a sheet of paper. I remember sitting down at the piano with the lyrics on the stand and hearing the music come out of me pretty much as you hear it on Tapestry. Toni passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. 😢 She was the first person after Gerry Goffin that I wrote with and had hits with, for example, “Where You Lead” and “Sweet Seasons.” When I moved to California in 1968, she was the epitome of a free-spirited Laurel Canyon woman. She lived in a hillside house with her dog, Arf, surrounded by books, record albums, plants and macrame. We both had curly hair, and she called me “Curly Girl.” We shared a love for horses, and we wanted everyone in the world to be kind and compassionate. Toni was also a poet. Her poems, not necessarily in rhyme, are quirky observations or anecdotes that take a surprising turn. Often, on my first read, they evoked a chuckle. You can find her poems on Instagram @tonisternpoet. In the hereafter I imagine Toni riding bareback on a horse on a beach thinking of new ways to say things we all feel. And I know she’d join me in being grateful that our connection continues to live on in your appreciation of our songs. My deepest sympathy to Toni’s lifelong partner, Jerry, and her family and friends. 🙏🏻Likes : 8402
