He looked like he needed a hug but there was a scent coming off of him that I haven’t smelled since I was touring Europe with a backpack: oil and leather and spit. It was the smell of a drifter. He asked me for a glass of water and I gave him a shot of Jameson. He asked for something to eat. I gave him my dog and told him of the old adage: “…learn to fish, eat for a lifetime.” I asked to take a picture with him because I know that it was possible that I was experiencing what they call a ‘spiritual moment’ and that this man may not actually be of human stock. I showed the photo to a friend of mine and he told me that the sage that showed up at my door is Aquaman. Josh Brolin Instagram - Sitting on the deck looking out at the countryside, the pond, and listening to the sounds of the wildlife. Coffee in hand. My daughter having just gotten married and all of us having been inside the greatest, most intimate wedding ceremony I’ve ever seen. Everything was real and as diverse as the personalities involved were, everything was selfless, connected, and directed towards the wedding couple. Turkeys gobbling somewhere off to the south. The sun just hitting me. Frogs braying. My family asleep. Ground squirrels scurrying around. The hidden sounds of a truck sneaking across a dirt road. How strange I feel this morning. Here, this morning, alone on this ranch, among all this wildlife. I feel what a waste of life certain behaviors are, reactions. My daughter last night, my God, and her groom: awe. We will leave here today or tomorrow and keep going, kids still in our bed all night. We will travel, and I will compile there. I know what to put together. A book from ‘87 until now: journals, prose, poems: a gasoline bubble bath. “Only the weak are cruel”. I read this morning. When your daughter gets married it all shows up: the memories, a life lived (or not), and how certain relationships resonate. I am so grateful for this time and this place to be able to have this time on. There are the kindest people out there. I have little kids to raise again, entire lives to monitor and be sensitive to. I didn’t grow old and go off to Italy. I stayed and walked my daughter over a grassy countryside to a commitment — a groom with tears falling down his cheeks — and I melted with it, into it. Everything is thriving right now: the plants and these sounds of birds and small animals I’m listening to right now. It’s all blossoming, only to wilt again, then later again open its petals to the sun. We fluctuate in a life. We die and are born again and again and again into a mystery that never gets solved. I am ripped open this morning. My son and my daughters are happy, contented. All the greatest gifts have no form, and sit there waiting to be acknowledged. @edenbrolin @cameroncrosby9

Sobriety is a moment of being able to love and be consumed by the glee it brings someone else. Sobriety is knowing the difference between selfishness and integrity. Sobriety is knowing that God is in everything and that it is made up of every color (and mixture of color) that exists. Sobriety is knowing the moon late at night when she was there for you in your toughest hour and, now, again, her witnessing your greatest joys. Sobriety is climbing in your truck for a 6am call after 8 years of sobriety and there being a card from your wife telling you how grateful she is for you having made the decision to put it down and to live instead accompanied by a collage board of your children — what was created because of that decision. And sobriety is when your children look at you and trust what they see (you can see it in their pupils, and the way they stand before you) — that they know they are not being cultivated into some idea but celebrated for the original garden they are growing into. Sobriety is about living better than your remembrance of what your greatest drunk ever was — an everyday malleability into gratitude for what is. None of this is deserved. All of it is perception. Josh Brolin Instagram - I choose with my wife to have babies. I am an advocate of birth and of life. I have never been involved in an abortion situation. I believe in the American Dream, but in a progressive American Dream. A dream based on making our country a safe place for our children, and for those children that grow into adults. A diverse country. It makes no sense to me because of the facts presented, the actions displayed, that these decisions to control a woman’s choice to vacate a pregnancy so as not to create a scenario that our government in no way will help support, helps its people as a whole. Like the mafia of old, as long as you paid up and behaved the way they wanted you too, adhered to their rules, you were spared violence. We live in a country where it’s people adhere and yet the violence reigns supreme. Nowhere else in the affluent world is it like that. We have revealed ourselves completely: we are a power hungry, stupid people (with an abhorrent educational system on top of it). We are those people that attacked the Capital. We are those people that have had more school shootings by thousands of percentage points than any other country. We are the Red Coats of Wilmington. We are the Dan Whites who, dumb and frustrated, kill what we don’t understand and represents something smarter than us. We tax and don’t help. Our healthcare is horrendous and having enemies is our energy bar and hurting those ‘enemies’ is our nectar for a life well lived. She needs to sleep now and, like me, she’ll awake at the sounds of squealing kids pining to run for the small farm animals outside. She’s been sick, so every sleeping minute is another notch in her recovery. So I’ll sit and I’ll stare. I’ll gawk at how beautiful she is, or remember how just a moment ago she looked at me when dreams started to tickle at her in my arms: a last smile, that exhale coo, until finally she drifts off. A soft blue hue caresses and slowly turns into what would be a central coast navel orange mixed with a violent smear of an I-5 roadkill. The sky’s exploding, and a soaring shrapnel of birds silhouette the morning sky’s cotton structure. I am getting older so it’s all the more precious to me: a new swell clawing at the shore, memories of stopping at old gas stations to last minute feed my older kids before school in whatever town we were living in for that moment, my wife’s coy and sleepy smile, and these little ones breathing in my ear, four of us to a bed, as I lay there in a heavenly paralysis saturated with the swaying breeze that is them. I am getting older and all of it sings like tripping upon Pavarotti for the first time in Central Park in ‘91 when my chaotic, heavily dramatic brain levitated. Josh Brolin Instagram - I want to thank everyone who saw @dunemovie over the weekend for supporting what I consider a different echelon of filmmaking and filmmakers. There are people, especially in this day and age, who want to be famous, and then there are those that are born with an inexhaustible dream. That dreaming (imagination) with the proper discipline allows us to reach toward an existential part of ourselves that we don’t get to touch otherwise (nor would even know is there to strive for). Films like Dune are that for me: they stretch my myopia into realms unfathomable while viewing, touch a depth in me emotionally that I didn’t know was there. Films like these have an honesty that is creative and fun but never cheats. It is storytelling at its best: to reach with the tentacles of our imaginations in order to see our foibles and our hidden, most extraordinary possibilities. It's as if I need to confront something and only unconsciously can my strength of self find itself and throw me into a cauldron with the ingredients needed for the revelation to take place. I'm an unfinished piece of music in those moments; a potential last sentence of a short story that will tie it all together. So something in me allows for it, this psychological stew to simmer and be sipped and tested. Maybe one day I'll be preferred. Depends on the restaurant, the person, even the era and trend. Everything was real and as diverse as the personalities involved were, everything was selfless, connected, and directed towards the wedding couple. Turkeys gobbling somewhere off to the south. The sun just hitting me. Frogs braying. My family asleep. Ground squirrels scurrying around. The hidden sounds of a truck sneaking across a dirt road. How strange I feel this morning. Here, this morning, alone on this ranch, among all this wildlife. I feel what a waste of life certain behaviors are, reactions. My daughter last night, my God, and her groom: awe. We will leave here today or tomorrow and keep going, kids still in our bed all night. We will travel, and I will compile there. I know what to put together. A book from ‘87 until now: journals, prose, poems: a gasoline bubble bath. “Only the weak are cruel”. I read this morning. When your daughter gets married it all shows up: the memories, a life lived (or not), and how certain relationships resonate. I am so grateful for this time and this place to be able to have this time on. There are the kindest people out there. I have little kids to raise again, entire lives to monitor and be sensitive to. I didn’t grow old and go off to Italy. I stayed and walked my daughter over a grassy countryside to a commitment — a groom with tears falling down his cheeks — and I melted with it, into it. Everything is thriving right now: the plants and these sounds of birds and small animals I’m listening to right now. It’s all blossoming, only to wilt again, then later again open its petals to the sun. We fluctuate in a life. We die and are born again and again and again into a mystery that never gets solved. I am ripped open this morning. My son and my daughters are happy, contented. All the greatest gifts have no form, and sit there waiting to be acknowledged. @edenbrolin @cameroncrosby9
