Caption : 6 years ago, I nearly dropped dead from a massive widow-maker heart attack after getting off a stage. So last night, I celebrated the anniversary of not dying by getting on a stage (courtesy of #cruiseaskew). With less than a 20% chance of surviving a 100% occlusion, I was so lucky Doctor Ladenheim saved me. And yet… Because Life can Life the fuck out of you sometimes, there have been moments in the last 6 years where I’ve felt it would’ve been better if the heart attack had finished me. But not today. Today I’m grateful to be alive. Bonus: In a few hours, I’m gonna see the lady who gifted me with that life. That means, if you ever wanted to stop me or my career from happening, youʼd send a Terminator back to this moment in time 3 decades back. Mercifully, there was no robotic hunter/killer trying to kill me at Sundance that year. The inaugural screening took place at the Holiday Village Cinema in a sold out 150 seater. That was the first time I got to see my first film with a full audience. The sheer thrill of finding out that ideas Iʼd had years prior actually held up to public scrutiny from strangers was intoxicating (but that also might have had something to do with the thin air at the high altitude). That first screening started the buzz that powered the next three screenings and a deluge of press about the black and white New Jersey convenience store movie and the director who was going back to work there after the Festival ended. By our fourth and final Sundance screening at The Egyptian Theater on Main Street in Park City, Clerks was being talked about and written about like it was well worth watching. As he introduced me and the film, Festival head Geoff Gilmore described me in a way that still gets me in the feels when he said “If Kevin Smith didnʼt exist, the Sundance Film Festival wouldʼve had to invent him.” Mine was a Cinderella-ish or Rocky-like tale that reminded folks anyone can take a shot at their dreams and maybe find a modicum of success – even if theyʼre from New Jersey. Caption : 20 years ago today, my Dad died. So this morning, my brother Don and I took our Mom to church. Shockingly, the roof didn’t cave in on the director of DOGMA. The mass was celebrated in memory of Pop – a man who shaped my life, both literally and figuratively before he left this world. Two decades back, my whole family happened to be in Philadelphia at the same time – so they all came to my #wizardworldphilly Q&A. After the Q&A, we went to dinner at @mortonssteak: @jenschwalbach, me, Dad, Donald, @donsgirlgrace, @virginia_in_vienna & her husband Eric (Don’s husband Jerry was stuck in Florida), where we had the time of our lives for the last time in his life. After a memorable meal with the family he co-created, Dad died in the wee hours of the following morning, June 1, 2003. A portion of his ashes have resided with me since his cremation, as a constant reminder of the quiet patriarch without whom I wouldn’t even exist. My sister has long maintained that I based Silent Bob on Dad – the guy who said very little unless he had something funny or insightful to impart (ironically, that would mean Jay is based on my Mom). I don’t know if I got Silent Bob from Dad, but I got nearly everything else. In the pic of me at the lectern, the bald spot in the front row is my Father – who fed me Standup comedy albums as a kid and loved to watch me talk to a crowd, knowing those records made an impact on his youngest son. While growing up, Dad took me to the movies all the time too – so he likely knew both my careers as a storyteller came indirectly from his unintentional influence. Caption : 20 years ago today, my Dad died. So this morning, my brother Don and I took our Mom to church. Shockingly, the roof didn’t cave in on the director of DOGMA. The mass was celebrated in memory of Pop – a man who shaped my life, both literally and figuratively before he left this world. Two decades back, my whole family happened to be in Philadelphia at the same time – so they all came to my #wizardworldphilly Q&A. After the Q&A, we went to dinner at @mortonssteak: @jenschwalbach, me, Dad, Donald, @donsgirlgrace, @virginia_in_vienna & her husband Eric (Don’s husband Jerry was stuck in Florida), where we had the time of our lives for the last time in his life. After a memorable meal with the family he co-created, Dad died in the wee hours of the following morning, June 1, 2003. A portion of his ashes have resided with me since his cremation, as a constant reminder of the quiet patriarch without whom I wouldn’t even exist. My sister has long maintained that I based Silent Bob on Dad – the guy who said very little unless he had something funny or insightful to impart (ironically, that would mean Jay is based on my Mom). I don’t know if I got Silent Bob from Dad, but I got nearly everything else. In the pic of me at the lectern, the bald spot in the front row is my Father – who fed me Standup comedy albums as a kid and loved to watch me talk to a crowd, knowing those records made an impact on his youngest son. While growing up, Dad took me to the movies all the time too – so he likely knew both my careers as a storyteller came indirectly from his unintentional influence. Caption : My Mom has been in the hospital over a month now for what has been a harrowing series of medical emergencies that almost took from me and my family the most important and beloved person I’ve ever known. Elevated blood pressure and heart rate brought her in, which the doctors tried to control with drugs and fluids for 2 weeks. That’s when pneumonia crept in to complicate matters. Then Mom complained about a stomach ache, which turned out to be a perforated bowel, requiring emergency surgery to save her life. She was knocked out on Fentanyl for more than a week after that, during which they put 2 stents in her kidneys and gave her a tracheostomy to assist in her labored breathing. But through it all, the 77 year old Amazing Grace fought for life and refused to succumb to her series of physical traumas. Yesterday, after over a month, they finally removed the feeding tube from her nose, putting her a giant step toward getting out and going home. And though it’s resulted in an almost adorable Munhkin-sounding voice, we’re hoping the trach tube gets removed next week, at which point she can be moved to a facility closer to home. Mom has been shockingly strong throughout her terrifying trial, so I had to share her delightful dance (shot by @virginia_in_vienna) celebrating the removal of the tube from her nose! Many thanks to the Floridian health care professionals – both the doctors and the nurses – who’ve worked so hard to keep my Mom on the sunny side of the ground! And while I’ve traveled to and from the Sunshine State tons of times in the last month to be there for and with Grace (including a trip with @harleyquinnsmith), my massive appreciation and all my love go out to my brother Don and my sister Virginia for their constant care and omnipresence at Mom’s bedside. I don’t wanna jinx it, but the prognosis is finally looking good for Mom – who just dreams of being back home with her kitty-cat, Princess. When she’s well enough to travel, you better believe we’re having a celebration for Amazing Grace at @smodcastlecinemas (including a screening of her favorite film, The Sound of Music)! It’s gonna be an extra special Mother’s Day this Sunday! #kevinsmith #mom

As your standard issue younger brother, I was always snooping around Virginia’s room – and one afternoon, while on an investigative crusade, I found a notebook emblazoned with the title “The Secrets Beyond the Cellar Door.” When I demanded to know what this was all about, Virginia explained that she was writing a book with her friend about an imagined adventure. “You can’t do that,” I opined. “You gotta ask the government first!” My patient sister inquired “Why do you think that?” I explained that our @moncolibrary cards had official state seals, with the implication being books required permissions from higher authorities. Virginia disabused me of this naive notion when she revealed “You never have to ask anybody for permission to write something, because writing is all about the freedom of expression. If you wanna write, you can just write. Anything you want.” This tacit permission to embrace imagination altered the course of my life and helped to turn me into an artist. It opened up the world to me, so I’ll always feel a debt of gratitude to Virginia for putting me on a path with advice I still heed today: if I wanna write, I don’t wait for someone to grant me permission – I just start stringing sentences together on a blank page until I’m somewhere i wanna be. Caption : I had *such* a great time doing #2bears1cave with the hysterically real @bertkreischer! This was instantly an all-time fave podcast for me with a kindred spirit. We covered so many topics and material over nearly 3 hours that just flew by. Check it out on the @ymhstudios @youtube channel now and watch my face: it’s full of legit joy. I could giddily spend hours guessing his alternative movie titles derived solely from a flick’s plot points (for example: “BenAndMattGetWings”). Only thing missing: @seguratom (who I also had a blast with in November on the #yourmomshousepodcast). This whole episode reminded me of the heady days of #smodcast with @samosier and made me wanna get back into weekly podcasting.
