Caption : Three years ago today, I experienced a singular pain at the news of @chadwickboseman’s death. The confusion was so profound that it took months to trust the feeling of joy again. : This is a photo I took on film at the airport as we arrived in South Korea in 2018. We had just learned to do the baby heart with our fingers. Here Chadwick was adding his suave flare 😊. We spent a glorious 72 hours there, and the memory fills me with so much joy. : Death is hard to understand, maybe even harder to accept. But the love generated from the life he lived will fuel every anniversary marking his absence. : Chadwick may no longer be in our photos, but he will always be in our hearts.Likes : 1008000

Caption : A SHAMELESS OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCE | Tony Awards 2023 Honored, humbled, strengthened and energized to don this breastplate created by @mishajapanwala, which she cast and molded of my body. Misha Japanwala is a Pakistani artist and fashion designer, whose work is rooted in the rejection and deconstruction of external shame attached to one’s body. In her artistic process, she creates a realistic and true record of a person’s body as an act of resistance and celebration, and an insistence on being allowed to exist freely in our bodies. She writes, “The word ‘beghairat’ (translation: shameless) has become an anchor in my practice; thousands of people have used it to describe me and the work I create, in an effort to insult and shame me into silence. In reclaiming the word and understanding that the rejection of others’ narrow definitions of shame is one of the most powerful tools for liberation, I’ve come to deeply appreciate and respect what living a life of shamelessness truly means. My craft pertains to documenting our existence in the most truthful way I possibly can — I change nothing about the body and how it looks.I think that act of surrendering and allowing our bodies to simply be, is such a beautiful and powerful thing.” Misha, thank you for this special opportunity to BE EXACTLY HERE, IN THIS BODY NOW. Follow her (@MishaJapanwala ) to learn more. Her extraordinary work, Beghairati Ki Nishaani: Traces of Shamelessness, is on view now at @hannahtraoregallery in New York City until July 30th. @mishajapanwala @debeersofficial @_thebellarosacollection @micaela @nickbarose @sonyameesh @hennabysabeen @mrbarberjLikes : 888012

Caption : Maputo is one of the most beautiful cities in Africa. It’s an exciting place to be, with an energetic young population looking to the future. Here are some of the locals who left an impression on me: : Photo 2: Meet Osvaldo Cipriano, a talented architect who gave me a tour of the city and its most renowned architecture. Fun fact: until 1976 the city was called Lourenço Marques and when it gained independence after a 500 year Portuguese rule, it was given the name Maputo. : Photo 3: This is Ivan Muhambe of Maputo Street Art. During the pandemic, Ivan came up with an art walk of street art, creating a new tourist attraction. Photo 4: Yara Chidiamassamba’s love for sports led her to start volunteering at Favela United, where she shows young women how to defend their bodies, and build confidence through sports. : Photo 5: I joined Yara in the Favela United kitchen. The kitchen is run by community mothers like Dona Angelica, whose role is to look out for neighborhood kids and provide a meal to fuel the Favela United youth after games. On the menu for that day? Pão com Badjia, which I got to help make! : Photo 6: This is Mateus Sithole, a muralist who surprised me with this incredible portrait. During the pandemic, he developed a collage technique using strips of African print fabrics, extrapolating their dye to make artwork. The result is this textured tapestry. I was so moved by its inspired expression that it brought me to tears. Obrigado, Mateus! : Photo 7: (From L to R) Meet the owners and chef of Lumma, Maiane and Nadia Matavele and Chef Marcelino Dgedge. Chef Marcelino is preserving techniques and ingredients of Maputo food culture that have been used through the ages. The food at Lumma is ASTOUNDINGLY FLAVORFUL! : Photo 8: This is Witnei Shamusso, Fashion Designer and Creative Director of Wumburi. A few years ago, she struggled with her Mozambican identity, so she delved into past traditions and found her voice. Witnei designs Wumburis and aims to celebrate Mozambican women. Photo 9: And finally, I had the most amazing time dancing with this Marrabenta dance troupe. Their energy was magnetic and I loved experiencing this expression of Mozambican culture!Likes : 506920

Caption : Introducing my new companion, Yoyo! I have historically been afraid of cats, but when my life was altered instantly recently, a little voice whispered to me that it was time to embrace change and new possibilities. So, a dear friend (shoutout Palmer Hefferan!) held my hand through the process and took me to visit my first animal shelters. I fostered Yoyo from Best Friends Adoption Center, and 3 days into it, I knew I could not give him up. What I have learned about him already: • He LOVES company • He LOVES his food • He is extremely careful and rarely drops things • He is very picky about his wand toys • He only drinks running water • The bugs in the house don’t stand a chance • He can’t be trusted around supplements! I never understood people whose phones were full of photos and videos of their pets – now I am one of those people! It may look like I saved Yoyo, but really, Yoyo is saving me. #YOYOYYO #Caturday And shoutout to the fantastic staff at @bestfriendsanimalsociety for being so warm, helpful and patient with me!Likes : 491069

Caption : There are much more important things going on in the world right now, and my thoughts are with those who are deeply suffering. At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust… I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception. I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, “Whatever, my life is better this way.” But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love. And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass. The promise, they say, is that a tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness. I hope it’s true… I share this to keep it 💯, and hoping that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it. #Breakup Let’s face our pain so we don’t spread it.Likes : 422395

Caption : THE STORY OF MY HEAD: I met @hennabysabeen last year at a wedding in Pakistan. She did the #HennaDesign for the bride and I was ASTOUNDED by the INTRICACY and BEAUTY of her work. There was something unique about the way she expressed herself in henna art. And I promised myself, “One day I will have a reason to work with Sabeen.” : 1.5 years later, when I got the invitation to attend the opening night of my dear friend, Mira Nair’s @monsoonmusical, I was scrambling at the last minute to find something to wear. I borrowed a sari and jewelry from @mishajapanwala, the bride from Pakistan, but the look didn’t feel complete… : And then, in the middle of the night, an image SHOT into my mind of a henna design covering my bald head!!! I could do something special and different, to celebrate the culture using the canvas readily available to me! I was so excited by the idea that I could not go back to sleep. Misha connected me to Sabeen, and we were ON OUR WAY… : Sabeen had NEVER designed for a head before; I had never done such a thing before either. My only prompt to her was that I wanted a widow’s peak (homage to the bindhi, borla / maang tikka), the rest was ALL HER INNOVATION. She suggested #jagua, a natural dye from the jagua fruit of South America that would be dark enough to give good contrast to my dark skin ☺️. : We were both excited and terrified. What if it went wrong or looked funny??? Well, I thought, I can always wear a head wrap…. : But Sabeen BROUGHT IT! We stopped now and again so that I could give her feedback because she was DETERMINED to leave me a happy client. And Sabeen was METICULOUS. She did not stop until it was perfect. When we looked at the finished head… we were both GRINNING! : It takes about 24 hours for the dye to really show up. And when it came in, in FULL CONTRAST the next day, I was simply MOVED. It was beautiful. It was bold and elegant; it had a point of view. We had not played it safe, and it had paid off. And I had found a new way to express myself without hair! : So the moral of this story is: DARE YOURSELF TO SEEK OUT BEAUTY IN NEW WAYS. And, Sabeen, thank you for bestowing on me the beauty of your hand and history!Likes : 386839

Caption : Celebrating @therealruthecarter, #BlackPanther #WakandaForever costume designer(swipe ↔️ for context). Ruth is all about collaboration and cultural appreciation and here is an example: : When I went into my first fitting for #WakandaForever, Ruth was still trying to figure out Nakia’s look for Ramonda’s funeral. She shared some concept art with me and wanted to hear my thoughts and ideas. I had been in Kenya earlier that year, and my sister Fiona had attended a friend’s Rwandan wedding in full Rwandese regalia. I was blown away by how elegant she looked, how gracefully her clothing flowed. I shared the photo with Ruth and she loved it too. So, just like that, it became the basis of inspiration for Nakia’s look and this is the final result. Ruth took it and RAN a MARATHON with it! : It is one of my favorite costumes of all time. The full look did not make an appearance in the movie (you only see a close-up of my face with the incredible head piece and face paint inspired by the Omo tribe of Ethiopia) so enjoy it with me here. : And let’s give Ruth all her flowers, for highlighting, preserving, elevating and inspiring afro-historic and afro-futuristic style! Congratulations on the well-deserved #Oscars win for Best Costume in a Motion Picture.Likes : 274910
